I think it’d be a more logical move to have him dominate the AHL and focusing on improving his defensive game and removing the warts. Some of the plays he made last night would get most prospects sent down.
playing 20 mins a night as a 20 Y.O and has 25 points in 31 NHL games to start his career...

yeah let's send him down

I agree with a lot of this. I'd characterize him as below average defensively overall, but he's not some massive liability like some would have you believe. The biggest opportunity for improvement is puck management around the blue lines, and continuing to improve his transition skating. He takes some unnecessary risks, but he's a rookie, it's to be expected.

There's no reason he can't become a passable defensive player.
It would help a lot if we had a Good defensive RHD Vet playing for us.

What exactly will he learn by playing inferior competition? He is already one of the top offensive defenseman in the NHL as a 20 years old. The whole team is playing bad defensively. Maybe the whole team should be send down to the AHL? His developing path is simple, play your game and figure out on the go what you can do and cannot do in the NHL. He is a smart kid and we are already seeing improvement in his defensive game. The AHL argument is such a weak one, what if he start having bad habits because he is too good.

The only argument about the AHL is if he was an obvious liability on a competitive team and having a hard time to provide offense. This is clearly not the case.

He has 14 points in his last 12 games, while being -1 (he's actually even if you remove empty net ES), playing the most minutes on the team, whether total TOI or ESTOI, despite having defensively challenged Matheson as a regular partner.

He's a rookie, so naturally, not every game will be perfect.

Must hurt to see Hutson be as talented as anything the Wings drafted during their rebuild while he was taken in the second round huh

Now caught up to the top 10 defensemen in the league based on points while playing on a mostly bad team in his rookie year, but you know he should play in the AHL.

At this point, I would take Hutson over most young Ds in the league. So much potential and a natural talent. Haters will go on hating.
