I'm a habs fan BTW, I just don't see Hutson as a future Norris Trophy D-man. Some people are OVERHYPING him big time. He's a good player but never will be a real #1 D on a good team. 40 pts and 3rd D (second pair) on a cup team is really good.

 keep it up, bro. You'll have a stack of these in no time:

My god. 89 pages on Lane Hutson. -14 on the worst defensive team in hockey.

Can we hold off until he's done something

More than half of that comes from empty net situations:

He's -6 in non-empty net ES, which isn't all that bad considering his age, being pushed into tough situations and often having lousy partners like Matheson and Savard.

He's also pacing to pass Quinn Hughes in the top 15 best rookie dmen in points and top 5 all-time in assists. As he gains experience, he might pace higher in the second half.

Because he plays a lot. That's easy maths. I like him but we will never win a cup with him as your 1st d-man.

I just don't see the point of your post.

Jeezus. I'm a neutral here (fan of the former team once known as the Arizona Coyotes) and I'm offended by your post on behalf of other Habs fans.

Hutson is young. There is EVERY chance that in the next 3-5 years he'll figure out how to play D in his own zone (and in the neutral zone as well). If he does that while at least maintaining (most likely developing) his offensive instincts, he's at least a top pairing D and most likely a legitimate #1.

Meanwhile, the Habs won't be competing AT LEAST for the next 3-5 years and maybe more than that. So Hutson has at least the next 3-5 years to improve, he'll have every chance to work on his defensive game because he's already earning a regular shift. If he sorts things out during that time (which imo is rather likely) most likely he'll become a true #1 by the time the Habs are ready to compete.

In the meantime, "I just don't see the point of your post" because it seems you're assuming Hutson can't / won't improve from where he is right now, which is a 20 year old defenseman playing hard minutes in the NHL. Which is already quite impressive, most D-men his age aren't even playing in the NHL let alone showing flashes of offensive dominance. The way he's playing so far in his career should be celebrated by hockey fans across the league, not just by Habs fans.

Assuming you're a Habs fan, you need to do better. You have a very good young player in Hutson.

He doesn't need to be a Norris winning Dman to be a key piece for the Habs when they're at their peak, even though there is a chance he could become that. He's obviously got a lot to work on, like almost every 20 year olf defensemen in the N does but if you can't see his that his skill level is outrageous, I don't know what to tell you man.

I do think Habs fans overrate a lot of their prospects but if going through this thread he's getting underrated by other fanbases. Now is that because they don't like the player or because he plays for the Habs? I think most rational people around here know the answer to that question.

Lane Hutson is dynamite.

To be fair to Montreal fans, we’ve had some decent prospects over the years and the absolute worst development. No those players weren’t going to be superstars, but they should’ve turned out better than they did. The entire Bergevin tenure was a black hole. Therrien in the NHL and Sylvain Lefebvre in the AHL. It was a place where prospects went to die. A guy like Hutson for example would never have been able to develop because they would’ve wanted him to ‘grind, grind grind…’ incredibly stupid.

Montreal has finally figured out that drafting and development is important. They’ve got a nice prospect pool coming up. Some will pan out and some won’t. But it’s a good group.

As for Hutson, he looks great. Star player for sure. He’ll always have limitations but overall he’s got great vision and is better defensively than I expected. Homerun for 62nd overall. I think he’ll be the best player in that draft including Slafkovsky who the team drafted 1st overall.

That's my opinion, let's see what will happen in the next years.
Yes. Just like 80% of the recent norris winner have not won a cup: Hughes, Josi, Karlsson, Fox, Giordano. They are still very good defenseman.

I mean Stanley Cup is very hard to win but it is not relient only on 1 player to make that difference. I think Hutson at his peak will contend for the Norris trophy which is not unreasonable from what I've seen of him.
