New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Oh yeah? But how do you know the job Peverly has done has been "insane." Being serious - What can you tell us that he has specifically done in detail?

And...If he's truly been so amazing why hasn't even interviewed for any open GM positions yet?
DAL has done an incredible job over the past several years finding players, and here's an article from when Peverley was promoted to Dir of Player Personnel in May 2021:

"Peverley was elevated to his new role in May, a promotion that means the former player development coordinator will help more with the decision-making process surrounding the NHL team, and alongside GM Jim Nill and assistant GMs Scott White and Mark Janko.

“He’s my eyes and ears out there,” Nill said. “I’m down in Dallas and I don’t get an opportunity all the time to get out there and see games anymore. My job now is to manage people and he now is my eyes and ears out there. When we make a decision on a trade, make a decision on signing a free agent, he’s going to have major input in that.”

So just look at DAL transactions since May 2021 and chances are Peverley had some role in the decision as Nill's "eyes and ears". In the 4 years since he was promoted, they made the playoffs the first year and have now been in the conference finals 3 straight years.

Some DAL moves since May 2021 (leaving out draft picks and just counting signings/trades):
Signed Mason Marchment
Signed Matt Duchene
Traded for Granlund and Ceci
Signed Sam Steel
Traded for Dadonov
Traded for Rantanen
Signed Lyubushkin

In all fairness, that's a vanity franchise. I'm not excusing Shanahan, but Toronto does have that vibe.

Also I've noticed that you seem to really hate Dubai and most young GMs. Can you explain what you think he's doing wrong in Pittsburgh? This seems like a pretty good way to prepare for life without Crosby and Malkin.View attachment 1038978
What did he build in Toronto? For a guy that presented himself as some next gen analytics and stats wizard, where are the results of that?

His drafting was weak. His trades were not very good. He got steamrolled on contracts that no other team in the league followed the structure. He won one playoff series in 6 years with a team he was essentially given.

Now, he’s going to rebuild the Penguins? Dubas loves draft picks bc it keeps the fog going of actually doing something. In the end, there’s no progress.

Once Sid is gone, he’ll relinquish his GM duties to Spezza, so he can rise above the GMs actions and keep survival mode in play.

Sorry man....I'm an intense dude. I rarely take it easy. I'm sure this isn't news to you. Unlike some Isles fans who just generally enjoy hockey and an Isles win or loss doesn't affect them, it does me. Couldn't tell you why, but after decades of being a fan I'm expecting the passion to be around as long as I live...And you're going to feel it in my posts.

As for this President/GM situation...I'm honestly not that passionate about Darche - I'm just very "unpassionate" about every other person I've heard associated with that role. So I'm more like, "Just keep Jarmo or Bergevin away from the Isles at any cost!" more than I am, "We must have Darche over anyone else!"

We've all seen this franchise literallty waste years under ownership and management people that were anywhere from bad to horrible inept. If you look back from about 1994 though when Malkin arrived there was literally ZERO HOPE of the Isles winning a Cup. Sure these boards were alive during those 20+ years with trade and free agent discussion, but if we're being honest it all meant nothing. The Isles were never going to win anything.

As a result, I think who your owner and President/GM are means EVERYTHING. I legit think too many fans don't think about this and are just happy the Isles went from embarrassing/lackluster to a Cup contender in a few years...And don't making the connection or even consider the reason is because we went from Wang to Malkin.

Well I am keenly aware of it, and part of the reason I'm so passionate about Malkin/Collins getting this next hire right is because we're going to have this GM and/or President for at least the next 4-5 years, and I'm tired of wasting time and want to see this team really build into a contender. There's an unbelevable opportunity to get this right and have us all very happy in the next few years.

But if you go an hire someone like Bergevin (or Jarmo), then if you are a "Cup or bust" fan like I am, then you are doing no better than those years under Maloney, Snow, Milbury.

This is why I'm passionate. It's "Emperor's New Clothes" obvious to me that Jarmo or Bergevin are not the answer. Darche might also totally fall flat on his face, but right now he's a mystery. Jarmo or Bergevin are known failures, and I don't want us to be in a position where we have to *hope* that they've all of a sudden morphed into Cup caliber GMs. One of them hasn't worked in over a year since he was hired from one of the worst franchises in the NHL, and the other just got passed over when the team he "advised" for didn't even want him. The rest of the NHL is telling you what they think about those two and none of us should ignore that.

I'd love it if Malkin/Collins would interview another 5-10 top candidates so we'd have more to choose from. However by all reports that next GM is going to be Jarmo, Bergevin, or Darche. And taking everything into account that's not even a decision. Give me the mystery candidate over the two DOA ones.

Chris Johnston said it very well in his article yesterday - They aren't enough good/quality front office people in the NHL. Malkin/Collins are probably doing the best interviewing the "top" candidates that are available. I'm sure they'd want to interview more, but the other teams don't have to grant permission and I'm sure most good GMs don't want to leave their current position.

So here we are...It's not the greatest situation. Just have to make the best of it. And just speaking for me (but with other NHL teams giving us clues), hiring Jarmo or Bergevin would NOT be making the best of it. And I really don't want us to go back to a time where we think there might be hope of the Isles winning a Cup, but really there isn't.

For the life of me, I have no idea why you hate Jarmo so much.

As Columbus GM, outside of the 1st round (2013-23), he drafted Marchenko at 49, Voronkov at 114, Del Bel Belluz at 44, Bemstrom at 117, Peeke at 34, Gavrikov at 159, Nutivaara at 189, Stenlund at 58, Kolesar at 69, Bjorkstrand at 89 and Merzlinkins at 76.

As St Louis Director of Scouting, the team drafted Pietrangelo, Perron, Backes, Berglund, Oshie, Eller, Stempniak, Polak, Soderberg, Cole, Bishop, etc.

This is a heck of a resume for those not drafted in the 1st round.

The guy knows where and how to find talent

What exactly has Shanahan done to deserve a job with the Islanders? Please enlighten me.
I haven't exactly been following Shanahan's career, but it looks like Collins was essentially his boss during his stint working for the league.

If NYI asked & received permission, this seems the likely outcome. I really doubt Collins needs to interview him beyond finding out whether he wants to work for the Islanders.

Whatever anyone thinks of him, this is Shanahan's job if he wants it. And geez, it wouldn't look great for NYI if he turned it down.

What have any of them done? There's a reason these guys are available. The rest have a job and at least one of them have been blocked from interviewing with us, good chance he's not the only one.

CBJ fan here but coming in peace because I am from Long Island and my closest friends are Isles fans. While I am far from an expert, Jarmo is a classic example of the Peter Principle. He is a really good scout and talent evaluator but he lacked the other skills needed to be a GM. I thought that well before he was fired in Columbus but the difference between how Don Waddell manages this club and the way Jarmo managed this club is night and day.

Maybe he has learned from his mistakes in Columbus but my gut tells me Jarmo is what Jarmo is and you guys cannot really afford to get this hire wrong. If you are looking for a director of scouting, he's your guy and super well respected around the league (not that he will necessarily accept that role at this point). But if you are looking for a GM/POHOP, I believe the Isles would be better off considering other options. Just my $.02.

Yeah then we can give Marner $18 million AVA for him to not perform!
At least we’d have an owner who doesn’t get paralysis from analysis when hiring and, more importantly, knows when to cut bait on a lost season.
