New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

So if they get Shanahan as POHO, is that an indication they want to bring in an inexperienced GM as long as they have the resume at the POHO level, or do you all think they would still want someone with experience like Bergevin or Jarmo?

I think it becomes Shanny’s decision. I think it was always the goal to get a POHO and let them decide on a GM.

Along with doing a very mediocre job in Montreal Marc Bergevin:

-ran Markov out of town
-traded Ryan McDonagh for Scott Gomez
-traded Michael Sergachev for Jonathan Drouin
-traded PK Subban for Shea Weber

This is not the guy you want to bring in when your most valuable assets are a 25 year old defensemen and a 1st round pick that is expected to become a defensemen.
Markov was offered a one-year contract with makeable bonuses that would not have been a pay cut. He insisted on two years though (he had no agent either which didn't help). He got his two years in the KHL, in hindsight he only had one good year left at the time.

Bob Gainey got fleeced by his old linemate Glen Sather in the Gomez deal.

Shea Weber was a very good Captain for the Habs and is a Hall of Famer.

Bergevin's trade for Phil Danault from the Hawks was a heist (for Dale Weise & Tomas Fleischman).

What hurt his time in Mtl the most in my opinion was the draft in the early years. Very little to show for the first several drafts. They had started to figure out the draft in his last few years, but it was too late to have much of an impact.

If he does get the GM job would be interested to see who he brings with him, and the relationship with Patrick Roy would be interesting too.

Could be wrong but don't think Marner would want to play in a NY market. Even though Isles do not get that much media coverage the fan base can still be rough at times. I bet he goes to like CBJ/CAR or something

I was just being a smart ass. lol I agree with you, I can't see him wanting to play there.

Question: Why is this deliberate approach to filling these roles so "embarrassing" and a "shitshow" exactly? There are currently no other GM/POHO vacancies in the League. The only other one was LA and they hired Holland. What's the rush? I'm glad they're doing their diligence by interviewing a number of people instead of rushing the decision.
Bc fans want to move on to commenting on the next thing. This process is all normal due diligence.

It is bizzare. They’ve casted a wide net, gotta get it right, take their time, yada yada yada.

Don't have strong feelings about any of the guys for POHO but it is sort of funny that we started out with one guy who ended up not being available at all and the rest have been GM retreads and Brendan Shanahan. I'd lean towards thinking Shanahan is the best of this bunch but it just feels like this is the type of group you're going to get for this position. It's always going to be guys who have been around for awhile AND are available, and they're usually available for a reason. Is there anyone else who makes sense for this?

In all seriousness Shanahan probably keeps MacLean and Albelin due to the Devils connection :help:

Shanahan isn't Gorton, but if the alternative is Bergevin punch me a ticket on the Shanny train.

Seriously, Shanahan has been a POHO in a super high pressure market and worked under a conglomerate ownership. So the Isles job would be easy by comparison. And I get the vibe that he lets his GM do his own thing for the most part. So if it's Shanahan as POHO and a younger GM, that's better than most of the rumors we've been seeing.

And as I mentioned the other day, Brandon Pridham would be a logical GM in that case if TOR lets him go, and maybe at this point they finally would. Patrick Burke as AGM. The NHL guy Collins hires all guys who worked at the NHL offices. Shocker!

Like many here, I’m OK with Shanahan.

Inking a guy like him spells the complete end of the Lamoriello era. That in itself is a huge step forward for the franchise. I thought that was a certainty a month ago, but some of the recent rumors put that into question. This whole drama about Lou hanging on feels like a zombie apocalypse that we just can’t extinguish.
