New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Ledecky has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever.

Thats extremely stupid to say because a lot of NHL prospects don't have "NHL goals" in their repitoire.

I don't know about "stupid". Ultimately, Misa's value is as a goal scorer. But if you watch the video of all of Misa's OHL goals this season, the vast majority of them are on chances that you rarely get as an NHLer. That's a legit concern. MDC's video was also full of open shots between the faceoff dots - that almost never happens in the NHL. Misa might end up being a good player, even great. But I don't see the Wow factor that would justify using a #1 overall pick on him. I could be wrong, but what do we have to go on other than video evidence?

If the isles go through all of this to hire Bergervin I will be very disappointed. This is taking a long time with a lot at stake. It’s becoming clear that this job is not considered desirable. We are definitely on the B list. Ownership does not look like they are very convincing and have looked pretty inept through it all. Looks like we were completely unprepared to start this search. I never understood what took so long to move in from Lou. Change has been needed for years now. It feels like our ownership just started to put their minds too it a couple weeks ago. We’ll just find a new GM… easy peasy. It feels like disappointment is on the horizon.

Difference with Lou is that you can be sure that Bergevin is gonna try huge moves. He's not a slow elephant like Lou who basically keep the same players over and over.

The PTSD thing is getting old. I'd rather look at it like, if we (the scouts/GM) consider the mistakes that were made with the MDC pick, we'll never make another terrible pick like that in the top 5 of a draft again.

We know very little about anyone who isn't a GM so the wait and see approach is way more appropriate than getting upset or excited because someone came from a specific organization. The only exception to that may be if there's a clear line of tutelage that exists and has shown to create winners (like Bill Parcells in the NFL did). I'm not aware of anything quite like that in the NHL though.
Then let’s not talk about anything. Shut down the board until ownership hires someone or draft day is here…whichever comes first.

I don't mind conversation but the volatility because someone is mentioned is a bit much for me.

Milbury made 2 of the worst trades in nhl history. Bergevin actually made a few good trades. Both are hot heads I’ll give you that.

Well I said "Milbury 2.0" so Bergevin is better...But still very bad.

Bergevin traded Sergachev & a 2nd rounder for Drouin (and then immediately gave him a 6-year deal for a total head case). Everything about that trade was wrong for immediate player value to team building.

Bergevin is a very streaky person when it comes to trades either way. If he hits, that trade will work out for the team. If it doesn't (i.e a Drouin for Sergachev swap), the error hurts said team for a while. Imo, the isles will be fine if they get him, but just know its the complete opposite from Lou

Bergevin's process is 100% opposite from Lou, but I think the results would be the same.

even if we don't get Berg. this thread is worth checking out for a laugh

I didn’t say all his trades were good. More wins than losses. With Mad Mike it was disaster after disaster which set the franchise back a decade. Probably told this story before but I met Milbury once at Cam Neely wedding. That prick Milbury made up a rumor that night that the Islanders were signing Roenick in free agency. Of course all the Islanders fans at the wedding party believed him.

I don't think he's necessarily elite but there's a pretty wide variety of goals here. Some snipes, some 2 on 1s, some breakaways, some garbage goals. Some might not happen in the NHL but he was second in the league in goals with 62 (first is a 2023 draftee), next closest was 12 goals away. His goal total would have led the league in a lot of recent years. And FWIW Dal Colle had 39 in his draft year. At a certain point goals are goals and he's scored a lot more of them than his peers have.

Hey, what do I know? He could be a star, and if the Isles pick him I'll root for him. But I want to be blown away by a guy if I'm picking #1, and that doesn't happen with Misa. I don't doubt he'll be better than MDC, but if you luck out and win the lottery you want elite, and I don't see anything worth the top pick in his videos. In MDC's year Nylander's video blew me away and that's who I wanted. This year I see elite skill in Schaefer, then a half step behind is Hagens. Frondell and Martone also look good to me.

I don't know... I've watched a ton of his goals, skating, and passing and I think he will be an elite NHL scorer. I know I'm in the minority here, but I would take him at #1.

Are you really saying that player development is more important than scouting? Nah - You can't be.

You think Kurcherov and Point would've sucked if they weren't on the Lightning and were on like the Blue Jackets or Ducks?

Conversely you think that guys like Ho-Sang or Wahlstrom would've made it if they were on the Lightning or Panthers?

No chance on either.

I'll agree that a certain coach/system/franchise can bring out the best (or worst) in a player, but the foundation of any player's talent, desire, and smarts are all built inside them before they are even drafted. I just think that most of those players reach that potential on their own.

And while I think Jon Cooper is a good coach, no question the #1 reason for their success was due to how amazing they've been at drafting the past 10+ years.

Thus once again...There is nothing more important in building an NHL Cup contender than your scouting department.

For me it’s drafting *and development. Eg, rushing a high pick into the NHL, stunting his growth, putting him in positions to fail, and potentially damaging confidence.

If there's anyone Bergevin reminds me of a bit, it's Garth Snow. Moments of brilliance (the Weber trade, which I incorrectly thought was awful at the time, trading Pacioretty for Suzuki, drafting Caufield), and moments of just ... what? (Dvorak acquisition, drafting Mailloux).

It's difficult to know just how much had to do with being Quebecois for the Francophone jewel. That's just something that comes with the territory. Arguably, if we're keeping it totally about hockey personnel, the acquisition of Suzuki probably swings the whole record in a positive direction. (I have never been a huge fan of Sergachev.)

But Mailloux drafting really bugs me. Hiring Bergevin is kind of like going out and getting Quenneville to be your coach - it's a vote for the worst of the boys club see no evil sports culture.

(and ftr, sure, maybe Mailloux can get a 'second chance'. and Mailloux "renounced" himself from the draft. by drafting him, bergevin made that statement by Mailloux purely performative. did he react angrily to being drafted? no. he said it would make him a better person. whatever. my opinion fwiw is that it was performative, and Bergevin contributed to that. that's not the way adults are supposed to act.)

I dunno, seems to me that Lou made a lot of high-profile moves. It's the lack of positive low-profile move that builds organizational depth that really hurt the Islanders.
