New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

The idea that nobody wants this job because Holland picked LA is just ridiculous. He is 70 years old and lives on the west coast. It makes total sense that he'd choose that job.

I understand people are anxious because we have the first pick, but this is a big decision and I'd rather they take their time and get it right. There is nothing wrong with wanting to interview people from teams that are still playing. It's not going to take a month for a new GM to get up to speed and draft Schaefer. Honestly, having the first pick almost allows us to have more time to figure it out.
It’s an overplayed clickbait narrative.

Wang and Snow ran a thin operation, Lou came in and enhanced the overall organization to his specifications- he’s a guy that likes a more centralized approach.

Under Lou’s operation the team went to the playoff 5 of 7 years under three different coaches, yes, they haven’t won a round since Trotz departure.

And now that Lou is leaving, there’s this seismic ‘oh my god’ the organization is sooo bad, it’s a huge lift to build it, an entire front office needs to be hired, who is gonna want to do that?

If that is truly the case, then Lou is literally the master GM of the universe. There’s plenty of teams that haven’t even sniffed the playoffs during that time or maybe won a round. Or, maybe, this narrative is a bunch of ‘reporter’ telephone nonsense for clickbait.

Is Shanahan actually in jeopardy over there? I thought I heard earlier this year that he was pretty safe no matter what.

Oh heck yeah Shanahan is more in jeopardy than ever if they lose to the Panthers. He oversaw this entire rebuild and the team has plateaued. He's hired multiple GM's and is about to lose Marner.

Even if you think he's done a good/ok job Leafs fans have never been more up in arms - They were throwing their $100+ jerseys (not hats) on the ice last night. They want someone's head to roll...And Treliving and Barube just got there.

And even if ownership was willing to keep Shanahan, he might want to leave. He's under a heat lamp in Toronto the size of the sun. That said I believe Shanahan makes $5,000,000 a season in Toronto. While I believe Malkin will spend what money is necessary to make the Isles a contender, paying Shanahan at least that amount and then having to pay a GM, coach, and a lot more staff members yet to be hired I think is a bridge too far.

Now if Shanahan was to be fired and willing to take 4 million or less a season to be president of the Isles, then there might be something to talk about.

I heard a rumor Shanahan might interview for the job when Toronto gets eliminated

Talk about bringing the band back together we just need Dubas. lol

Yeah, Botta pushing that rumor.

Because he’s losing the room.

Yeah - Not sure why we're throwing Botta under the bus when this was from Staple's late afternoon article in The Athletic yesterday...

• I had discounted Leafs president Brendan Shanahan in my update earlier this week but have since been told not to be so fast to dismiss him. Shanahan’s contract expires June 30 and the Leafs are trying to reach the Eastern Conference final for the first time since 2002. If they get past the Panthers, that might make a Shanahan return in Toronto more likely. But if not, and the MLSE board is willing to move on, there could be interest from the Islanders. Collins and Shanahan worked together at the NHL for years.

Shanahan is probably not a dual-role option for the Islanders, so ownership would have to make the call on whether it’s worth shelling out for Shanahan plus a GM — current Leafs special assistant Shane Doan, maybe? — and also whether the Leafs’ timeline for making a call on Shanahan works with the Isles’ timeline, already 23 days into their search.

If anything Botta mentioned Shanahan like 10 days ago so if anything he wasn't making up news - He was breaking it.

Chris is that you?

And if the new GM comes in and favors Misa or Hagens? Or is drafting Schaefer one of the job requisites?

I haven't seen one report or draft guide that doesn't have Schaefer going first. I don't pretend to be an expert. I haven't followed these prospects this year because I didn't think we had a chance for any of them. That being said, I think if a new GM plans on not taking the consensus first choice, they better damn well be sure.

Ha ha. Wildly creative. Good one Seafoam. ;)

Now...Would be refreshing if you'd own that Botta not only didn't make up the Shanahan report just to get attention, but is true and he was actually was the first to report it...Or you just gonna keep making low-hanging one liners to distract the "room" from that fact that you're off both about Botta and the Shanahan report?

FWIW, Patrick Burke was mentioned by someone (Staple/Lebrun/Botta) as a possible candidate. Shanahan hired Burke to be the Director of Player Safety working under Shanahan when he ran that department for the NHL. So, possibly Shanahan as POHO and Burke as GM? Weight as coach? :laugh:

BTW, TOR also has that guy who's supposed to be a whiz - Pridham or something? Add him in too.

Actually more important than being "sure," I'd like our next GM to be right.

Said it before and I'll say it again...If Hagans wasn't from Long Island/an Islanders fan, not one Isles fan would want to take him #1 overall. Conversely...Imagine if Hagans was from Toronto and a Leafs fan. Those same "Hagans #1" Isles fans might not even take him at #3.

Whatever team any prospect likes should not even be in his scouting profile. It doesn't make him have better hands, be a faster skater, or have more hockey sense.

While I don't see it, maybe 5 years from now Hagans is the best player from this draft. And if the next GM/scouting department believes in that and is right, then that is the reason to take him - Not because he had Islander pajamas as a kid.

Drama aside, it kinda makes sense. Lou's GM contract ran out in TOR and he declined staying on as an advisor. This could be a situation where his ego played to our benefit. He's like Hyman Roth - when most people would be looking to wind down and relax, he's looking to expand.

Lou = Hyman Roth
Holland = Mo Greene
Garth Snow = Carlo
Chris Lamoriello = Fredo
Bergevin= Clemenza

Darche = (Hopefully) Micheal

He’s an old school lifer. Those types drop dead quickly at that age once they are outside their passion or life calling.

Lou’s contract was not renewed. End of story. The owners are looking for a replacement, but they are not crapping on the guy. Rather, they are letting him advise or pick just his brain.

Someone posted something and I never saw any comment about it, but Lou supposedly was the one who suggested to Darche that he get into management, back when Lou signed Darche to a contract with the Devs. IDK, maybe that's incorrect info. But if it isn't, Lou can provide some insight on the guy.

Anyway, the recent info seems to be trending towards Lou riding off into the (Buffalo?) sunset rather than roaming the halls as a NYI mole. So hopefully at some point soon we all look back on this and laugh. :scared:

I am throwing my hat into the ring for an upper management position within the Islanders organization. I will be the new Assistant to the Travelling Secretary.
