New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Friedman being really cagey in the latest pod, I think they are in or waiting on someone still employed. Chevy and Shannahan both have expiring contracts.

Friedman: "I am reserving judgment on where I think the Islanders could be going here..."

How many times in the history of the English language has anyone "reserved judgment" because something positive was about to happen...?

Other than some basic org knowledge transfer, we don't need Lou telling a new GM how beards are bad, what his son's 15-year plan for the AHL team is and why he is on track, or how we should honor his handshake deal with Palmieri. Hopefully, if he is advising, that ends on June 30th.

It sounds like they really want Darche but don't have the Balls to give him his first G.M. Job, so hence they will have Father Time hang around... This is a very very bad idea that might have any new G.M. Quit only after a short time due to the Frustration with Lou...

Serious question...

How do you know that Columbus doesn't have a very good scouting department it it is that group that doesn't deserve all the credit for that nice list of players you listed above.

Because that's what scouts are for and most GMs don't scout at all (Lou), and the ones that do usually only go see the top prospects (if they have an early pick).

So closing the loop....Jarmo is embarrssing. Stop trying to convince yourself otherwise.
We can’t even give a former scout credit for putting together a scouting department that made good picks now?

Can someone jog my memory on what made Jarmo so bad (aside from letting players walk). I’m seeing some solid and ballsy trades here.

- trading ryan johansen after what would end up being the best statistical year of his career for Seth Jones, who quickly became their #1 defenseman

- moving on from jones at seemingly the correct time, receiving 3 top 12 1sts and a second for him and a late first.

- grabbing Artemi Panarin for Brandon Saad and Anton Forsberg lolol

I’m seriously asking because I never paid much attention to the jackets. I remember players not wanting to play in Columbus - did that have to do with Jarmo specifically?

While that's true, Jarmo would be the one responsible for hiring those scouts as GM, and he had a great track record as a scout with the Blues organization prior to becoming a GM.

But alas, you conveniently ignored the last line of my post. I was pretty clear that his track record as a GM, outside of possibly the draft, is poor. It's ok to acknowledge the good, even if the candidate is bad overall.

If Gorton is truly out of the mix, Ross Mahoney of WAS might be my top choice.

BTW, if the alternative is handing all the keys to Holland or Bergiven, I'd take Darche with Lou as purely a non-binding advisor. But hopefully the outcome is better than that.

Jarmo hired Zito, FWIW.

Did you consider the possibility that it's Botta and Staple who are trying to kill you?

Yes I did. And while I wish that was the case, Botta/Staple rely on reporting facts or they could lose their careers. Thus while the final chapter is not written in the Isles GM search, the Isles are interviewing/considering candidates that will fail just as Lou failed.

No - saw your entire post. However it ended it still started with, "I'll be honest... I'm not totally turned off by Jarmo." And even if a fire is controlled pretty quickly I'm here to inspect the wires to make sure there isn't another one.

For the record, I believe it was Lebrun who reported Lou will be sticking around for the remained of his contract which expires on 6/30.

I don’t believe they have announced this year’s draft date, but last year’s was on 6/28. It’s possible that incoming candidates are being told they will fully take the reins on 7/1, which could be after the draft. That might not be so attractive.

Any talk of the scouting team being overhauled pre draft seems remarkably unlikely. One last chance for Lou to deal the #1 for a couple of third line grinders…
Lou IS a HOF executive and has his name on 3 Stanley Cups and a long run with the Devils in the playoffs, maybe 20 or so years.
He is a wealth of knowledge. But some of that knowledge is antiquated and not of value now, while some still applies.
Lou has a rep for fair dealings with players and agents.
But Lou is stubborn and has an ego. Believe me, 82 year olds do not get persuaded to change easily. I know because I'm 82 and been an Islander fan from the beginning.
If Lou remains as a "consultant on call" that will work. But don't let him touch the control board.

Rosner from this morning on the Lou thing:

"I know you all saw the report that Lamoriello could remain here in an advisory mentor role. I can’t sit here this morning and tell you, with certainly, that the report is false, but I don’t think it’s being considered right now. Maybe it was something that was considered prior."

I revise my previous statement of "poor" GM track record to "mixed".

Here are some bad decisions of Jarmo's

-Mike Babcock

-Merzlikins contract

-Dzingel trade

-Marchessault trade

-Kerby Rychel selection

-Not trading Panarin or Bobrovsky at the deadline

-Trading David Clarkson and a 1st to let the Knights pick William Karlsson

There are others, but that's a decent list to start with.

FWIW, Kekalainen was able to acquire elite NHL talent fairly consistently in an undesireable market (Gaborik, Jones, Panarin, Gaudreau) which is something NO GM in Islanders history sans Bill Torrey can say.

We're starting to rationalize a potential hire that no other NHL team has deemed worthy of bringin on board their franchise even as an advisor since he was fired.

Play it out...

The Isles hire Jarmo....And within seconds the amount of laughter from other teams/fanbases would be palpable.

I say this wanting/praying for Rosner to be right....But has Rosner ever been right?

And why are Staple/Botta, who actually have relationships in the Isles building, putting out other reports?
