New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Counterpoint...

Snow never would've even reached out to Trotz if he was available because he needed to be the smartest guy in the room.

I mean anyone who can convince wang to not just hire him, but give him a lifetime contract...

Charles thought it was HIS lifetime, not Garth's . . . always read the contract before signing it!

And 6 years later we have seen what Lou "did". By now I would have thought the Kool Aid wore off. :thumbu:

Any GM with a team in the position the Isles were- a team needing a head coach and with owners willing to meet Trotz demands would have hired him. The Isles were the only team looking for a head coach and with owners with deep pockets. If the the Caps met his demands there is no way Trotz would have been on the Island and Lou's ineptitude at his age would have been even more exposed.

The only thing Lou did was hire Trotz. The rest of what he did- sign Zajac, Parise, Greene, Palmieri, asst. coaches Mclean and Gomez. Sign Chara. Give away a first rounder for Pageau. Pick Wahlstrom. Fires Trotz. Hires Lambert. Fail big time to bring in any coveted UFAs and holds onto Snow's roster that was in need of a retool 4 years ago and repeating like a broken record that he"believed" in this roster. That's what he "did" It is indeed laughable to think that any GM could have been so foolish.
This is like saying I didn’t want those first 2 years of Lou because I knew these last 3 years were going to end up this way. Absolutely ridiculous line of thinking.

gonna be a pretty fun off season eh? Imagine if we actually make a splash in July? Cant be..... anyway, My season tix rep sure thinks so.....I'll shoot the lock off my wallet in July I said if so......

I thank Snow for those first 2 years roster because that’s just being honest. I was very vocal against Lou’s hiring from the beginning. The more he meddled with the roster the worse it got.

We likely need a veteran GM. The tasking walking in the door:

Address the scouting department although amateur scouting hasn't been bad.
Move out a few vets while not crushing the locker room.
Deal with Roy.
Likely add at least one UFA.

This requires an experienced hand with established contact, Holland has the requisite contacts in the scouting community, connections with existing GMs and has dealt with most agents. Not sure who else fits the bill.

Lou only hired the coach that Snow was never able to get…the coach who got the team to play better than the level of their talent.

Chris Pronger has been hitting the interview/pod circuit pretty hard the past two months. Strong indication he’s drumming up interest. And he’s worked for the league for several years.

Give him 1 year with his staff and his input on upgrades over Lou’s square peg-round hole ideas. If Roy doesn’t show signs of improvement with 100% control of the roster/lineup decisions, clean house and go on a coach hunt next year. Ideally if you move out the fluff on the roster and pick up a bunch of guys for 1 year prove it deals, it could work out.

Not interested in him unless he can find that puck he took during the playoffs a few years ago.

In all fairness the back-to-back Eastern Conference finals teams were largely Snow rosters and thus selected by Snow scouts. Lamoriello made a few shrewd moves via free agency to polish the roster but in general Trent Klatt can identify NHL talent. It’s a shame they wasted Nino, Reinhart, MDC, and Strome though…
But I don't think any of us would call Snow's scouting staff above average.

Cup-winning GMs in their 2nd or later GM job in the past 45 years:

Bill Torrey (4 Cups)
Jim Rutherford (2 Cups)
Craig Patrick (2 Cups)
Dean Lombardi (2 Cups)
Doug Armstrong (1 Cup)
Brian Burke (1 Cup)

Respect. How many of them were unemployed when they were hired to that 2nd Cup winning team?

I feel bad for periferal because Malkin is definitely gonna sign on off on Chiarelli.
Does it really matter who we hire? They will automatically become the next whipping boy for Perif, especially if we don't win the cup in year 1. Heck, Perif was already targeting Lou on only year 4 of his tenure aggressively, and passive aggressively in years 2 and 3.

It may turn out this way. I am just not enamored with his systems and he makes some puzzling decisions.

Got news for you...Lou was just as bad of a GM on day 1 of his tenure as he was in year 7. A bunch of people we're basking the glow of snow being gone and/or couldn't understand that it was Trotz covering that fact up. Sorry it took you 4 extra years to realize we had a subpar GM.

Like others here feel free to take as many shot at me as you want. Reality is I'm 100% fine with a total rebuild that will take years...As long as it's being run by a great GM.

Lou stunk. So did Snow. As did Milbury.

Guess according to you we shouldn't call that out until....Around year 7 of them f***ing up the team? Happy to admit I'm both more emphatic, but not nearly as patient as you.
