New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

To me, if the Isles are going to hire someone new, Darren Yorke makes more sense than Kate Madigan. He's been in the league for far longer and has helped to build a scouting juggernaut in Carolina. Sometimes, if you hire someone that's too green, you risk a John Chayka.

The next Bill Torrey is going to be 30 years old at some point. Should we just take on someone like Peter Chiarelli because he's older and more experienced? I know Chayka didn't work out, but that's not a reason to not take a chance on an awesome candidate because he's young. The goal is to find the best person...Period. And now the spotlight is on John Collins and Scott Malkin to know the difference between Chayka/Chairelli...And a GM who can lead this team to a Cup.

If they fail then it's on them.

My only concern for the first female GM, wherever she may land, is that the current GM network comprises those who would exclude her at what is likely about 50%. So of the other 31 GMs, probably about 15 or 16 would not do right by her. Think of Anchorman, the movie. This would make doing her job - the one we need her to do - very difficult. It's unfair, but those are likely just the facts. I'd love to be wrong. Anyway, she's not my first choice, but she's not one of my last 5 choices, either.

GMs have scouts, analysts, capologists, and other support people. What a GM must have personally is relationships with other GMs and agents, a vision for the team, and the negotiating skills to execute that vision. That's why hotshot data geeks often fail when given the chance. It's a relationship business.

Here are some names. I forgot about Bergervan and Jarmo.

Jarmo is interesting. The only thing scares me about Jarmo is he always made trades and sometimes to soon in my opinion. I respect always trying to improve the team but you need a balance and continuity.

Darche and Martin are 2 guys that really intrigue me.

The more I think about it, the more I lean to a Holland as Prez + some young gun AGM as the GM model.

That's where having a veteran president with the rolodex helps.

if I’m Collins I’m so reluctant to go with anyone new to the GM thing as almost every recent hire league wide who fits that bill has been a total disaster. SEA SJ MIN NYR it’s truly amazing. Even Yzerman now seems like a product of what was just a good farm system when he got there. As for Madigan, I’m gonna be a jerk here lol. I was once given some great advice by a friend that said when a woman is under the age of 50 stay the hell away from her if she’s wearing glasses because a woman who truly gives two crapolas about her appearance career and is driven at that age is gonna wear contacts 90% of the time barring cases of intolerance etc. I’m done there, but seriously I’d not want to go with a glass ceiling hire here. I also think this GM job requires someone who is a bit of a jerk or hardass too because when it comes to competing with NYR for UFAs you’re gonna lose 8 out of 10 times. I think the extra aggressive personality ala what we saw Stearns do this year to make sure he got Soto is a big thing when you’re the second fiddle in a city
I think Kent Hughes (New to being GM) has done a great job using cap space to get draft picks and then trading same player for more draft picks. He's done exactly what Bergevin could not do. I'm leaning toward the same type of guy who is a player agent looking to go to the other side. Gives them so much more power knowing almost everything from the other side as well.
I heard Brisson might be a possibility but why would he leave what he's built unless he wants to write another chapter in his Carrer

I wouldn’t hate it. Just don’t want Holland to be another Lou. I think a collective of guys is better
I want a seasoned, proven vet ultimately in charge at the end of the day.

He can have a hotshot unproven up-and-coming brainiac as his GM, but there is no substitute for proven leadership to mentor and make sure, one, nothing too stupid happens and, two, to be there if the unproven brainiac falls flat on his face.

I remember when many teams’ fans were lusting after Paul Fenton for ages and then he only lasted a year in Minny…

@periferal I feel the need to admit I was wrong about something we went back and forth with because if we cannot admit our wrongs we cannot celebrate our rights.

You were right about Lou not changing any of the scouts. I felt this was something he must have done because why would he have kept every single one but it seems he did that.
The fact that any one besides players from Garth effin Snows regime (and you can argue why some of the players are still here) shocked me too.

YL-

So much respect to you for this. Thanks for sharing, but all good. I just am thrilled that the team has the chance to have a clean slate. I just pray they target the scouting staff from top to bottom needs an overhaul and I pray they get it right. Without that we're lost.

The fact of the matter is the next hire just has to be the right guy at the right time. While we wanted Lou gone an organization like Buffalo would benefit massively from getting Lou yesterday. Old, young, male, female, I don't care but they need to be the right hire.

If it keeps Chiarelli, Bergevin, Francis, or Kekäläinen miles away from this team, they can choose someone from Alpha Centauri.

If you look at Buffalo fans, they say they’ll stop rooting for the team if Lou goes to them. They’re dreading it

Darche is probably the one I would like to see the most but another name I'm seeing which intrigues me is Pridham from the Leafs who is more of a "cap guru" and their contract guy, though apparently he is paid very well, possibly even more than some general managers so might be difficult to get but apparently he was on the radar of the Flames and Pens recently
