New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

That’s just Friedman covering all bases since he was uninformed - that’s his MO when he knows nothing but needs to speak on a subject.
Do people even listen to the actual source? He said he could see them getting one of those guys in a position to learn and someday maybe be a GM. He certainly was not talking about them being a GM now.

It’s a big old game of phony telephone.

If Lou opened a pizza place he wouldn't sell pepperoni pizzas because he doesn't like them.

Yeah, Lou just kept most of the staff that was there under Snow, and some of them predated Snow. Lou did bring in guys like Conte and Lemaire as "special advisors". I hope Collins does some due diligence and find out if there are a few guys who are worth keeping, and then just clean out the rest of them. I love Ken Morrow the player, but do we see evidence over the past, I don't know, 20 years, that he's good as head of pro scouting? Everyone goes. Except the hibachi pretzel guys, of course.
They already know. Collins ain’t no fly by night type of guy. He’s made a living off of doing some really interesting stuff - that’s part talent and execution, but also understanding the marketplace (diligence).

Take a step back, if Collins allegedly wanted to fire Lou in December, say he does. Who is the interim GM? Collins (nope), Chris (nope), Botta (he dreams), Roy (when was the time that happened?), outside of that, it’s an external ‘interim’ hire - that’s bizarre. You can’t kick Roy upstairs on an interim, then have an interim coach as Roy now shoots himself in the foot.

So, he let the situation play itself out (Lou AND Roy), put a plan in place concurrent to Lou still operating the team. He knows Lou centralized operations so they have to build out post-Lou, however, it doesn’t need to be built out on some immediate timeline.

Hire new guy, make an organizational statement (which always ends in ‘compete for the Cup’ btw) that states the direction, and away you go. The new guy will know how to make trades and sign players. UFAs either want your money and believe in your mission or they don’t. That’s pretty simple.

Not as good as Eamon McAdam or Cody Rosen though. Taylor Cammaratta outscored Mackinnon in prep school!!!!

We could have had Buchnevich and Guenztal that 2013 3rd round but who cares.

The Cammarata pick was brutal, no doubt:

This will be impossible. This draft will be with the Isles current scouts or scouts not with a team. Anyone currently employed by a team involved in scouting will not be permitted to jump now and be involved in another team’s draft.
Sure they would. Whoever they hire will bring their own knowledge and use it for the Islanders. What, you think the new guy is going to skip this draft because he scouted those players for his previous employer?

See Treliving as the most recent example where because he was still under contract and had intimate knowledge of Calgary’s board, part of the deal to release him was he wasn’t allowed to participate in the draft prep and wasn’t even allowed to sit at the table until after Cal had made their first pick.

I STILL get PTSD from this. I was so angry that day. We could’ve had Buchnevich as well that day. We took goalie Eamon McAdam at 70 when the obvious pick should’ve been Buchnevich. Imagine if we had picked Buchnevich and Guentzel instead of McAdam & Cammarata, geez, 12 years later it just hurts.

Just think, you could have had Radko Gudas instead of this guy.

Friedman Links Recently Retired 900-Game Veteran as Top Candidate to Be the Next New York Islanders GM

The New York Islanders finally moved on from Lou Lamoriello, and now a former Islander is potentially firming to take on the role next.

The 2024/25 campaign was another disappointing one for the New York Islanders, and as a result, the organization made the shock decision to finally move on from ageing General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

While it was a move that most fans were hoping for, no one quite expected it to happen so soon into the off-season, and now, intriguing conversations have begun about the next GM for the organization.

Those conversations took over the latest 32 Thoughts podcast with Elliotte Friedman, who suggested a very intriguing name as a potential candidate, one that's close to the heart of Islanders fans everywhere.

Martin, who recently retired after spending the last 16 years with the organization is looking to stay involved at the NHL level, and while that could have involved a coaching role, it appears he's drawing interest in the General Manager position.

It's unclear at this point whether or not Martin has pushed for this role, or whether Friedman is simply speculating due to his connections in New York, but with GM's around the league getting younger, the 36-year old would certainly be an intriguing option.

This isn't a decision that New York will make lightly, as they've got plenty of work to do before becoming competitive at the NHL level once again, so while that may not be the ideal place for a rookie GM, if the Islanders are looking to shake things up, it certainly wouldn't be the worst possible decision.

PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!
wu..

wut?

I don't know Davy...

Where is that bolded headline from lol. Freidman never mentioned Martin as a TOP candidate. I've seen a few articles and podcasts talking about Friedman mentioning Martin and Hickey but leave out the part where he says that Collins might want alumni guys like Martin and Hickey to LEARN the position. Even mentioned Glenn Healey. To me that sounds like not the GM job but a position in the organization?
I think House of Hockey operates out of some kid's house.

Before I comment, good or bad, can someone who follows the Devils tell us about Madigan?

From what I remember, Kim Ng worked her way up from the Yankees to the Dodgers as assistant GM to running her own show for the Marlins and was pretty good at it before the Marlins Marlined.

She could be a genius she has been a fast riser and the devil’s organization. My only issue is her history only goes back to 2017 and it’s only with the devils. She was in a director of player development role and the assistant GM for the past few years I would like someone in charge who has more hands-on experience and more years of service.

And her dad, Jim Madigan, is a former Islanders scout.

I guess she was a Ray Shero hire?
