New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Lou shielding the players is like that crazy mom who is scared little Timmy will get seriously injured riding his bicycle if he doesn’t have a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, shin guards and a cup on.
He gave the players total privacy, allowing the NHL minimum requirement for availability. This is probably one of the things players liked best about Lou. No reporters or the broadcast crew on team flights. The locker room and practice facility was the Fortress of Solitude for the players.
Not as good as Eamon McAdam or Cody Rosen though. Taylor Cammaratta outscored Mackinnon in prep school!!!!

We could have had Buchnevich and Guenztal that 2013 3rd round but who cares.
Stop! I’m gonna have a nightmare tonight.

I ant to laugh? Go look at the 2nd round of the 2012 draft. We had the 3 guys in the organization and only drafted 1 of them. Other 2 were acquired in trades for Thomas Vanek and Michael Grabner.

That’s one of my favorite drafts. The all defense draft and somehow we missed Jacob Slavin.

I’m also still waiting for officer Ryan Pilon to come to training camp one day.

I want no part of the ususal suspects who seemingly get new jobs for no reason. Failed coaches and inept GMs are abudant in NHL yet they seem to get new gigs despite never doing much. Hiring any of them would be just like running the hamster wheel. Give me something new, something fresh and someone who's actually worked in well functioning organizations.

And don't make former players GMs for no appartent reason.
I can't believe it has to be said that the Isles should not make former players, current broadcasters, and current coaches with no NHL GM experience into the GM role. There's lots of current up and coming AGM's that would be great hire.

You’ll see him when you see Lukas Sutter and Felix Bibeau. I wonder if Kirill Kabanov ever turned into a superstar.

I just looked at the 2011 draft. Took Andrey Pedan in the 2nd over Vincent Trocheck and Robbie Russo over JGP. 2 picks after JGP was Mike Reilly.

I like Roy, but you know that look he has on the bench when they're losing, kind of like "I'm so frustrated and I have no idea what to do about it"? That's not great with a coach, and even worse with a GM. And what are his qualifications for a very complicated executive position like NHL GM? Pass.
I think that look was a frustrated look of a guy who hates to lose and also hates to have his name tied to a loser but knew what most of us knew, we had too many dogs that just didn’t cut it as players. He was probably forced to have Martin play early in season and probably got shot down when needing players to be brought in , Lou’s loyalties to dog players must have been frustrating. I know I would struggle having to work under Lou

Attn: John Collins.

On behalf of all Islanders fans (not in the Blue and Orange Army), we formally request the following (not including capable hockey ops staff):

1. A draft party with current players
2. A team meet and greet event at Adventureland
3. Viewing parties during the season with random giveaways
4. Return of the Ice Girls
5. tattoo Lou’s to make a comeback on the concourse
6. Giveaways during games, not just for the special ticket package
7. Equipment sale each year
8. No requirements on facial hair/hair styles
9. The return of propane infused pretzels in the parking lot after games
10. Practices open to the fans again
11. Other items TBD
12. Full prospect camp

edit: Yall beat me to it.

10% ownership and an industry insider. I approve of this. The team has been “marketed” by Lou like he wants to shield the players from everything. It doesn’t work like this in the 21st century. Pro sports is entertainment. Players have to be made available.
It was about Lou having total control
The facial hair, the numbers, the no leaks, etc

All about him and his way
Nothing more, control

Lou created a very boring team with no chance of a Cup nor any excitement around the franchise. Now there will be. I'd much rather watch a bunch of young/talented prospects grow and create an exciting core over the next fewyears than continue watching a group of Pelech, Pulock, Palmieri, Mayfield, Pageau, Lee, Engvall, Cizikas, Duclair, etc essentially become on-ice corpses.

Whenever Lou left there was going to be 2-3 years of a shitshow/total cleanup. That's how bad he was. Did you want that clock to start now or years from now?

24 hours ago there was no hope. Take solace that now there is.
wanted to start after i'm dead. I'm tired of seasons where the Islanders are out of it in December.

Very few people believed there was a competitive future here for this team with the path we're on. That's why you perceive a celebratory mood. The others are not afraid of sucking for 5 years with the hope of a better return on investment in the future. This is not to be feared, it's to be embraced.
Except we won't now if we made the right decision on who we hire until five or six years from now...then it'll be another five or six years to fix that. It's Russian roulette with GMS as much as it is with prospects.

Friedman Links Recently Retired 900-Game Veteran as Top Candidate to Be the Next New York Islanders GM

The New York Islanders finally moved on from Lou Lamoriello, and now a former Islander is potentially firming to take on the role next.

The 2024/25 campaign was another disappointing one for the New York Islanders, and as a result, the organization made the shock decision to finally move on from ageing General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

While it was a move that most fans were hoping for, no one quite expected it to happen so soon into the off-season, and now, intriguing conversations have begun about the next GM for the organization.

Those conversations took over the latest 32 Thoughts podcast with Elliotte Friedman, who suggested a very intriguing name as a potential candidate, one that's close to the heart of Islanders fans everywhere.

'I also wonder, too, if they're going to want an Islander in there. Like Matt Martin or Thomas Hickey... Someone who bleeds that Islanders Blue.'

Martin, who recently retired after spending the last 16 years with the organization is looking to stay involved at the NHL level, and while that could have involved a coaching role, it appears he's drawing interest in the General Manager position.

It's unclear at this point whether or not Martin has pushed for this role, or whether Friedman is simply speculating due to his connections in New York, but with GM's around the league getting younger, the 36-year old would certainly be an intriguing option.

This isn't a decision that New York will make lightly, as they've got plenty of work to do before becoming competitive at the NHL level once again, so while that may not be the ideal place for a rookie GM, if the Islanders are looking to shake things up, it certainly wouldn't be the worst possible decision.

PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!

And this whole ‘I signed with the Isles bc of Roy’ Duclair thing is a big question mark.

The more that comes out, wonder if Roy’s remarks weren’t more calculated to throw Duclair under the bus and put the blame squarely on his play, ie you didn’t live up to your end of the bargain. This is on you, not me.

Allegedly Lou may have already been fired at that point. Roy was protecting himself in the league since it was all out there that Duclair signed bc of Roy.
In the grand scheme of things I hope Duclair being allowed to grow back his dreads gives him his power back, lol. (Samson!)

I think this new GM spot needs to get filled sooner than later. There is so much
That needs to get organized if they want to reshape this team and the draft or before is the best time to do this. If they told Lou that his contract wont be renewed before season end, I’m sure they have someone in mind and that person is probably involved in the playoffs. If they don’t , I can only see someone close to the team so that it won’t take long to get up to speed.

Next time I open a pizza restaurant I know what I'll do- I'll hire the guy who makes the best hamburgers in town.
If Lou opened a pizza place he wouldn't sell pepperoni pizzas because he doesn't like them.

This is long long overdue. That’s how you get draft picks like Ljungkrantz

Yeah, Lou just kept most of the staff that was there under Snow, and some of them predated Snow. Lou did bring in guys like Conte and Lemaire as "special advisors". I hope Collins does some due diligence and find out if there are a few guys who are worth keeping, and then just clean out the rest of them. I love Ken Morrow the player, but do we see evidence over the past, I don't know, 20 years, that he's good as head of pro scouting? Everyone goes. Except the hibachi pretzel guys, of course.

For those of you totally against a rebuild or depressed at the idea of the Isles sucking for years...The Isles were heading in that direction even if Lou was kept on. Even at his best Lou was just keeping this team around .500, and it's shocking that anyone would want to carry on with such a low bar, and nowhere near a Cup, for the foreseeable future. Now that Lou is gone the possibilities that we can fix things went up by multiples.
I really don't want to mess with the Kumbaya vibe around here by getting into rebuild vs retool, but the key thing is getting the right Pres/GM/Asst GM/analytics/scouting staff/etc., etc.. If they get a smart bunch of people, I'm good with whatever they decide is the right course of action. My thing for a while has been that if they get the right group, they can pull off a retool and get the team legitimately competitive with maybe a short step back. But if those smart guys decide they have a yenna for McKenna, so be it.

I could see a hybrid making sense though. Take a step back year to build the front office and scouting staff. Decide on what kind of team they want to have (style of play/roster construction). Focus less on acquiring players than trimming the fat and gaining some assets. Trade away expiring contracts (Lee and JGP) for futures. Resolve Mayfield, Engvall, Pelech, Pulock, etc.. Maybe end up getting lucky in the lottery, but worst case maybe they make 4 picks in the first 2 rounds of a deep 2026 draft and then aim to start an upturn the next season.

Where is that bolded headline from lol. Freidman never mentioned Martin as a TOP candidate. I've seen a few articles and podcasts talking about Friedman mentioning Martin and Hickey but leave out the part where he says that Collins might want alumni guys like Martin and Hickey to LEARN the position. Even mentioned Glenn Healey. To me that sounds like not the GM job but a position in the organization?

That’s just Friedman covering all bases since he was uninformed - that’s his MO when he knows nothing but needs to speak on a subject.

With the draft coming soon, and the importance of getting those few picks right, the new GM should be someone currently involved in scouting.
This will be impossible. This draft will be with the Isles current scouts or scouts not with a team. Anyone currently employed by a team involved in scouting will not be permitted to jump now and be involved in another team’s draft.
