New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

I think i'd like to see an assistant GM plucked from a successful organization like FLA or DAL as my first preference, they seem to know wtf they are doing. You gotta be more nimble in this league, you cant keep guys because of 'loyalty'....the LOYALTY should be to the fans, not the players.

I’d add Winnipeg and Carolina personnel to the list. They draft so well, no tax advantages, and they are a small market team not likely to be in on big UFAs like the isles.

If it's a general trend in the NHL I guess that simulcasting is just going to be the thing, if not and the plan is just to be a simulcast pioneer, I'm not sure that's the pinnacle of professionalism and is more a return to Wang's world.
I don’t see this as unprofessional. The radio broadcast was amateur hour. If I want to listen to the Islanders in the car, I just play the audio of the TV feed because King and Picker were impossible to listen to.

You don’t get it - the radio broadcast is more descriptive than TV because it has to be - there’s no visual aids. Just broadcasting brendan and butch is not the same as radio. Put on a playoff game on tv and go to the other room and just listen. You won’t get the full picture.

OK. After a day to digest things, here are my thoughts...

  1. WOO f***ING HOO!
  2. Thank you Scott Malkin.
  3. I can totally understand why Lou was the first front office hire for any new NHL owner, but now that mistakes were made and expierence had, the next front office assembled under Malkin's watch will tell us if we have an ok owner, or an excellent one.
  4. Can we confirm that Lou is NOT staying on in ANY capacity...?
  5. Chris L. needs to go next.
  6. Roy after him.
  7. Most of the scouting department after that.
  8. I feel hope and excitement I have not felt since Snow was let go/Trotz was hired.
  9. An Isles ticket rep who knew i had zero interest in tickets reached out to me less than 20 minutes after the Isles made the announcement. It was so quick he's the one who actually broke the news to me. (I told him any future ticket purchases depend on who they hire, but now I'm open).
  10. Speaking of who they hire...
  11. Ken Holland - Only as President...NOT as GM.
  12. Marc Bergevin - No f***ing way. This is Mike Milbury 2.0.
  13. Jarmo Kekäläinen - Terrifying that he's even being discussed. As bad as a franchise as Columbus is some of the moves he made independent of their ownership situation are scary bad. Now I hear he's a big reason for their good scouting over the years so I might be open to bringing him on in a scouting role, but then he's only steps away from GM and I just cannot have that.
  14. Doug Wilson, Peter Chiarelli, or any out of work former GM....NO, NO, NO, NO, and NO.
  15. I really like the idea of an experienced President of Hockey OPs (perhaps a former GM) pairing with a young/1st time GM (who's experienced/working in another teams' front office.
  16. This is why I'm very open to Mathieu Darche. I need to learn more, but like what I hear so far. Also want to learn more about Brandon Pridham, Evan Gold, and several others not yet mentioned.
  17. Whatever President/GM is hired the literal most important thing must be...DRAFTING & DEVELOPMENT. You're not winning without those two things. Don't hire any GM who doesn't put those two things at the top of their list.
  18. Speaking of...The scouting department needs a big overhaul - If not cleaned out. Despite limited picks there are guys here from the Wang era back when total mind-bending picks were made.
  19. Matt Martin must have a role in the front office (assuming he wants one) - At least the level of importance of what Eric Cairns is doing.
  20. I'm down for Hickey as well.
  21. For those of you totally against a rebuild or depressed at the idea of the Isles sucking for years...The Isles were heading in that direction even if Lou was kept on. Even at his best Lou was just keeping this team around .500, and it's shocking that anyone would want to carry on with such a low bar, and nowhere near a Cup, for the foreseeable future. Now that Lou is gone the possibilities that we can fix things went up by multiples.
  22. Thus...This is a good day for Isles fans.
  23. That said, Collins/Malkin have to get the next hires right. If they do, then we can truly celebrate.
  24. But for right now there is hope and I am so excited to see where things go.

Attn: John Collins.

On behalf of all Islanders fans (not in the Blue and Orange Army), we formally request the following (not including capable hockey ops staff):

1. A draft party with current players
2. A team meet and greet event at Adventureland
3. Viewing parties during the season with random giveaways
4. Return of the Ice Girls
5. tattoo Lou’s to make a comeback on the concourse
6. Giveaways during games, not just for the special ticket package
7. Equipment sale each year
8. No requirements on facial hair/hair styles
9. The return of propane infused pretzels in the parking lot after games
10. Practices open to the fans again
11. Other items TBD

Starting to feel like John Collins is running the show and will name himself President of Hockey Operations and oversee all hockey decisions
10% ownership and an industry insider. I approve of this. The team has been “marketed” by Lou like he wants to shield the players from everything. It doesn’t work like this in the 21st century. Pro sports is entertainment. Players have to be made available.

Lou shielding the players is like that crazy mom who is scared little Timmy will get seriously injured riding his bicycle if he doesn’t have a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, shin guards and a cup on.

Bring back the Blue & White prospects game.

I knew I forgot something. The rookie camp in July like every other team does with the scrimmage at the end. Just no stockpile of Long Island kids like they had the one year. I don’t need to watch the guy who played club attempt to keep up like his life depended on it.

He gave the players total privacy, allowing the NHL minimum requirement for availability. This is probably one of the things players liked best about Lou. No reporters or the broadcast crew on team flights. The locker room and practice facility was the Fortress of Solitude for the players.

We also want Shannon to be able to wear that family heirloom necklace again on broadcast. :naughty:

To not let fans around the team ever isn’t good. Ideally having the kid who’s 6 be able to wait outside the practice facility for autographs from his favorite players should be forbidden because some $12 an hour rent a cop chased him away. I’ve went in there for PT upstairs and had one of them stare me down because I showed up early to my appointment and tried to peek in at a practice. I’m a fan not the Patriots during the Super Bowl FFS.

Don't really have a feel who they should hire. I'll speculate more when we get some actual interviews and not the insiders throwing their future sources out there as potential candidates.

But one thing the new GM absolutely HAS to do is build out the front office. It is as embarrassingly bereft of talent as the rest of this organization is. It's been thirty years since the days of Torrey and his AGMs and there's been NO ONE that another organization has looked at and even interviewed for the GM spot. Shameful, really. The organization of Devellano, Regier, Maloney (whatever you think about him) currently has the FORMER (god it feels so good to say that word about Lou) GM's failson and his cap guy as AGMs. Inexcusable.

Elliotte Friedman mentioned that he thinks they might bring in a Hickey or Martin into the front office to teach them to one day be a GM and that's an interesting idea. Hickey, especially, seems like he has a keen mind for this stuff.

I feel like Collins will find a GM and temporarily operate as president of hockey ops until they get everything set. Then he steps down and the GM or someone else takes over. As for a recent Islanders alumni, Hickey should be given a position in the organization. He’s well spoken and knows the ins and outs of the game. I’d like them to get an analytics guru to break everything down and work alongside the GM. Find someone like how the Yankees got that one coach who figured out the torpedo bats. A person who can completely break down everything in finite detail and find a way to make this organization a long term example of success.
