New York Islanders: Lamoriello Contract Not Renewed; John Collins Searching for Next GM

Quick @periferal look!

Chris Lamoriello is currently the highest ranking member of the Islanders Hockey Ops.

But the more we’re learning the more it seems he’s behind these decisions and has strong influence with Malkin
He's the only member of ownership who is an operating partner. The rest of the guys have no clue about hockey quite frankly and aren't qualified to conduct a search like this.

Lou built a team that would play a lock-down style game.

Roy wanted to play an up-tempo, creative style game.

Lou-Roy butted heads on play style.

In all honesty, I kinda take Lou's side here. Why the f*** would you want to play an up-tempo style game with this roster of players? I think everyone here could've told you that that would be jamming a square peg in a round hole.

As a coach, it is your job to get the most out of the players you have. Why would you purposely put them in a bad position to perform? Was it in an effort to get the guy who built that roster fired? That's some petty shit. Or was it a coup to get his job?

Based on this, I do not want Roy moving forward.
Jeez man. Think about what you are saying. Why would Lou hire Patrick Roy to teach a style of hockey the opposite of what he is known for and preached for decades? It's plain stupidity on Lou's part not Roy. Next time I open a pizza restaurant I know what I'll do- I'll hire the guy who makes the best hamburgers in town.

This is where that, "this is the roster Lou gave me" came from. Lou knows the style of hockey Roy preaches but he doesn't change the roster to match Roy's style. That's not Roy's fault. That's the guy who got fired fault. And Patrick Roy early on called Lou out on this even when he willed that sorely lacking roster into the playoffs over a period of weeks.

IMO Roy should be considered a viable option for GM.

Is there some reason for optimism? Is he qualified? Because I have zero confidence in the outlook.

Lou did the hiring, he built the team. Roy interviewed and would have had to agree to Lou's philosophy with Lou's roster. You think of all people - Lou Lamoriello - would hire someone without discussing his preferred style of play and whether or not the candidate would be willing to play that style?

So either Roy lied to get the job or went rogue. Either way is not good.

Or Lou had a senile lapse of judgment and had no clue what he was doing. Lou took an up tempo roster and then dismantled it to become a defensive minded grinding team only to turn it around again in 3 short years to an up tempo team again without the horses to play that style of game. Like I said he was all over the place.

What? How did he "dismantle" the high tempo roster? By firing Doug Weight or by letting Tavares walk?

And how did he try to turn them into an up-tempo team again? By simply hiring Roy?

Like Lou, you're all over the place.

Which is another reason I wasn’t enthusiastic about the Roy hiring. He was the wrong coach for this roster. And after a year and a half of watching some of his bizarre in-game decisions, well, I wouldn’t mind if the Islanders fire Roy too.

It’s not like Lou did any due diligence on hiring Lane Lambert either. Lazy hiring on Lou’s part.

He is currently in charge of the most storied franchise in the league, in the middle of overseeing a promising rebuild. Why would he give that up?

You'd be surprised. Maybe he does not want to live in Canada or some other reason, but we've seen guys shockingly bail before out of seemingly great jobs to go somewhere else.

You trade away Leddy, Beauvillier, Eberle, and Toews and replace them with Pageau, Palmieri, Fasching, Wahlstrom, Zajac, Chara (Chara?), and a long term contract to Mayfield. Yeah- you are going to be slow.

Wrong coach for this roster or wrong roster for this coach- both but that's Lou's fault. Now the problem is out of the way let Roy build a team suitable for his up tempo game plan.

Beau was traded for more offense in Horvat.

Ebere was not traded, he was selected in the SEA expansion draft.

Leddy was moved to make space to sign Palmieri, for offense, to avoid paying him long term and to open up some space for our young D-men.

Toews, I will agree with you, that was a mistake.

Zajac played 28 total games for the Isles - 14 regular season and 14 playoffs. Why include him?

Wahlstrom was seen as a young goal scoring upgrade. Why include him?

Chara was signed for one year as veteran depth on September 18th, he was never a needle mover.

Mayfield, I also agree that his long term deal was scary at the time, but Lou liked him as the stay at home PKer and thought to keep his AAV down while they were in the compete window.

Result of all these decisions was a slower team.
