What happened with Kalyiev’s trade request last year? Probably should have just followed through with his request and not just throw in waivers for free.

22-23 looked like he'd taken a bit of a step with 28 points in 56 games and beating his point totals from 80 games in 21-22. 23-24 was a real regression. Is it an issue with Hiller?

Either way, his skating was always a concern. You've got to think the game several moves ahead to make up for that.

This thread is fairly similar to what we've done with Robertson. Guy needs top 6 linemates but not quite good enough. Would likely excel on a rebuilding team.

At least my Preds arent the only stupid team that waives young talent
I would like to see the Preds claim him. Well, from the fantasy GM perspective anyway. Our lineup already has Vinnie Hinostroza, Ozzy Wiesblatt, Big Sexy McCarron, and Mark Jankowski up front. If we can't afford to take a look at Kaliyev, who can?

That said, I know exactly what would happen to the poor guy here, and it would be basically the same as happened in LA. And the same thing that happened to Fagemo when we claimed him. He just isn't the type of player with the pace and style that Brunette wants in a player, plus he's young, so there's no way he'd get a fair shake. The Preds actually need all the help they can get and SHOULD be in a position to take a chance on Kaliyev. But they won't. Sigh.

On a team full of two-way players, you can afford to use a Kaliyev on a line as such, where they were utterly dominant:

You see his numbers turn to shit when he was put with losers like PLD and when buried on the 4th line with 5 minutes per game and one shift per period

But in an effort to get their money's worth on several poor investments, they buried Kaliyev to forcefeed Fiala and PLD, and it's been all downhill since.

And funny enough, their numbers were better with Kaliyev than when force fed Fiala:

Maybe you don't want a sensitive player/personality to manage, or one you can't plug and play (especially if you're f***ing lazy like Koala), but the results were absolutely there when used correctly. Also don't forget around the same time he was in the top 10 in the league in power play productivity rate so it wasn't just 5v5 with Danault/Moore. When he was getting minutes, he was a factor. When he was buried, he wasn't. It's that simple--and sure we can make other observations about his pouting and 'drive' and whatever but the facts are the facts. Just another situation where they made a decision based on poorly-chosen vets over youth in order to justify a dogshit investment return.

They tried to trade him for over a year, nobody offered anything, even as part of the PLD trade to Wash . The TDL, the draft, over the summer, nothing. No team would even trade a 5th rounder 2 years from now on him.

Is this kid just a one trick pony? A shot and not much else?

What would kings fan say is the main reason he was always in the dog house

Pretty much.

He had arguably the second-best shot from the draft after Caufield.

He seemed to be in McLellan's dog house because he just didn't fit in the 4th line grinder role. Then Laferriere took his spot after he was suspended in training camp last year. This year, he got injured and didn't really get a chance.

Kaliyev is an example of how not to develop a prospect. Take a young scoring forward that needs Top9 minutes and Powerplay time. Use him as a 4th line grinder for 5mins a game with little to no Powerplay time and complain when he doesn't score. Then bench him for a year because he doesn't play the system (1-3-1) well, which you knew when you drafted him.

I hope Kaliyev goes somewhere else at this point and scores 20-25 goals a year. The Kings organization needs a management reset or to never draft a skilled guy again.

At one time I thought that he was a solid young NHL talent, what happened to him?
Rob Blake envisioned a Fiala-Dubois-Kaliyev 3rd line that feasted on lower level competition and would be the key to beating the Oilers. It was a complete and immediate bust and Kaliyev, as the uppity young’n making NHL minimum, became the scapegoat for Blake’s two biggest acquisitions blowing up in his face.

It's funny how this keeps happening in most NHL teams. I've seen so many one-dimensional type of guys get drafted, and teams try to instill some two-way crap into the player, and they fail to develop and off to Europe they go.

Sometimes you just got to live with the warts on a player. Not everyone is a two-way player.
This is a long held bitch of mine... team drafts an offensive Dman.. then give him no offensive opportunity and complain he doesnt' block shots. Team drafts an elite forward who can score - then complain he's not good in bottom 6 or can't PK.

A great example is my Oilers.. Hollo and Bro.. play 5/6 and 4th pair... then bitch they can't play in the NHL. They've done quite well with primo minutes.

I've seen so many Canucks prospects come and gone with the same issues. If you're a 1st rounder, you get more rope.

I don't know how many times we're thrown out our top AHL scorer into a 3rd/4th role in the NHL, than people keep saying "he can't score!"...well, no shit! or "he can't backcheck", well duh we never taught him to!

It wasn't just the 4th line role, he was on the 3rd last year [plus a few games on the top line] until the end of Dec. At some point the coaches lost their trust in him, plus he was wasn't scoring either, even on the 2nd unit pp. From Oct-Dec he played 30 games, had 3 pp g 1 pp assist. He was averaging almost 14 min a night including pp time. Only 3 pp goals and 4 points isn't good at all over 30 games. He eventually lost his spot.
