Kings gonna King

Draft an enigmatic scorer who can be lethal offensively, try to turn him into a good little checker, be surprised there's pushback and he turns into basically exactly his draft profile.

Kings front office when Kaliyev isn't successful in 1 shift a period, 5 checking minutes with Trevor Lewis and Brendan Lemieux:

Edit: FSL covered it better below, and @bland covered the believable rumors/oral stories.

Draft a shooter that's not great at forechecking.

Bench him because he's not great at forechecking.

Attempt to trade him, but no value because no ice time.

Waive him.

King's should only draft hard working grinders from now on & stop wasting everyone's time.

Edit: Look for a shooter on a cheap contract at the deadline because of lack of cap space.

Don't get me wrong, he's a flawed player, but he's got more to give, and the Kings' patience with veterans like Fiala giving the opposing team breakaways every single game being so high yet that with youth being so low is maddening.

I think his introverted nature and disappointing response to traditional developmental techniques cost him the benefits of doubts up and down the organization. It's a shame, because there is so much to like there.

I can confidently say that if there was ever a case of xenophobia in the NHL it’d go to the Kings with the way they handle these players. Zero reason to waive Kaliyev. Kaliyev is the most misused player ever. Sucks a lot to lose him.

Sorry, RHP? What are the knocks on Kaliyev? He's young and cheap enough that I suspect that he'll get claimed.
The knock on Kaliyev is that he plays like a sniper and not a grinder. Weird that a sniper plays like a sniper.

For the last 1 1/2 seasons or so my thoughts on him have basically been: I doubt he'll be a game breaker or anything, but I could see him being a 15 to 20 goal guy on a team that doesn't try to turn him into a grinder or bench him for half the game because he missed a poke check or something.

Kings want players to play like they did under Darryl but they want to distance themselves from guys like Daryl.

They want guys that can play like race horses but turn them into geldings the second they run wild.

It’s like being married to a stay at home feminist. Hahahaha

It's funny how this keeps happening in most NHL teams. I've seen so many one-dimensional type of guys get drafted, and teams try to instill some two-way crap into the player, and they fail to develop and off to Europe they go.

Sometimes you just got to live with the warts on a player. Not everyone is a two-way player.

He's a victim of what I feel are poor developmental decisions, but also just hasn't grown up as a player.

His first few seasons were spent on the fourth line with Lizotte and Lemieux. He had good chemistry and Kings fans, rightfully, imagined "what could be" if put on a higher line.

But McLellan didn't do so. At least not consistently. He would get one or two games, and the time he had a bad shift, he'd be demoted again.

Finally, last year, he just seemed to get worse. His shot wasn't dangerous. It wasn't creating rebounds. He wasn't battling hard.

It's an expected outcome to a static developmental approach when putting a sniper in a grinder's role and punishing him for not learning to grind.

I'm not sure if he'll grow up and/or thrive with another team. He's certainly worth a try if you want a young sniper you can be patient with.

Will be shocked if no one claims him and see's if a different environment works out... Cause he was asked to play a role he wasnt well suited for here under TMac, then his development sort of stalled, and then got hurt, and never got another serious look due to our roster being full. Sucks, but not surprised. We just didnt have room on the NHL roster for him.
