Maybe it's just me but this is how I see Myers play lately.

Was it bad I was hoping to come in second there? First time ever I have cheered to be second place. I wanted Laine more then Matthews. 50 goal scorers is like seeing A Yeti/lock ness monster cross zooming around in a flying saucer telling us Global Warming is really happening.

There was one play in the third where he got the puck in the corner, turned to face the play, and then just stood there and let (Zuccarello?) just come to him and check him.

To me it looks like his confidence is really low - paralysis by analysis. I like Myers too but he needs to snap out of it - he's going to be important in the playoffs.

I noticed that play too. Actually he has been making similar plays quite a lot. Maybe not quite that obvious but the same type of thing. Appears to either be thinking too much or in a coma and not thinking at all. I'd bet on the thinking too much.

Edit: I see that pretty much everybody noticed that one.

That one play(2nd period i think) where he had the puck in our corner all alone for an hour seemingly and a Ranger starts to close on him and he loses it just exemplifies the unplugged controller comparison. I love that description it really is quite apt for a few guys in the league. Tyler also did some good things last night too.

Yeah that was crazy. Reminds of watching the mini-kids team my youngest is playing on -- some of them are so overwhelmed by having the puck with time and space that they just freeze utterly until someone comes and takes it away from them. We call it the Fieldmouse Reflex.

And yet, he makes some outstanding plays in all zones and his stickwork can be top-notch, along with his shot. He's a specialist -- exactly the opposite of a JMo/Trouba type -- even more than Buff, IMO.

Mathews is no slouch as a goal scorer himself though. He scored 40 as a rookie last year and is on a 43 goal pace this year. Laine has now played 4 more games and has 6 more goals. Advantage Laine, but the difference is small. Interestingly the playmaking C and the PP specialist shooter have exactly the same number of A's.

:) I don't think we really lost out on the picks. It was win-win.

Very good post and something I've been thinking about for a while.

Myers does good things many other players can't do, simply because of his size. It's a similar situation with Buff although when Buff makes mistakes they are more glaring perhaps because they occur in these "high event" situations you guys talk about.

In short, they're both polarizing players for the same reason, but in a higher impact way for Buff due to greater TOI and higher event situations.

I hope that made sense. I used to be a better writer.

The needs of both teams filled perfectly.

 The teen thing is interesting when comparing to the others on that list.

Matthews is 7 mos older. Not a big thing but still a bit of a thing. Matthews only had to be born 2-3 weeks earlier to be drafted a year earlier. But I think we should have progressed beyond that kind of navel gazing by now. Both great players.

I could not see the game - only had tsn1290. I am really happy for Mason and for us. We need a solid Mason down the stretch to get Helle some much needed rest. Also nice to know that our backstopper is a decent option in the post season if necessary.

Question re wheeler / nickels collision since I haven't seen it. WTF happpened?

Wheeler stretched reaching for the puck. Meanwhile a Rangers player hit Scheifele and they both collided very awkwardly

Yeah in hind sight everything worked out for both teams. At the time I was more sure of Laine being able to score goals in the NHL then Mathews. In comparing stats though all last year Pomo was determined to move Laine to the wrong side and placed him on the second power play unit. Mind boggling that Laine still put up that many goals in spite of the "coaching" he received.

Lol, I was going to mention that play as well. Just like when the joystick on your controller jams and you can't move your guy. I was literally laughing at that play and muttering wtf Myers?
Don't remember the exact play, but could it be that there was a line change going on at that time?

Possibly, but that still wouldn't explain what the hell he was doing. It was like someone tasered him.

Sure, and Copp looked outa place in his first 6 mins of playing in a top 6.

Not saying Armia is a top 6, or can cover it for a few months, but neither you or I can assess that in 6minutes
And remember how quickly they sent Copp down as soon as they had better replacements. You need to really dominate every minute you are up there when you are a bubble guy or teams will always get a Connor, Perrault, Laine to bump you down to 4th line. If he had completely dominated in his time up there, do you think they would have sent him back down?

Hope Schiefele is not that serious.
Rest it up and don't play right away.

Hendrick can handle it :)

Lowry like miss all of 2018 already. So far

Copp had more than 6 shifts so not really the same thing. You're insistence that just over a period of Armia on the top line is enough to determine his future as a top 6 player is pretty ridiculous.

You can usually get more than 6 shifts in a period. Roslo showed more his first few shifts on the top line than Armia did. Let me put it differently who is Armia going to replace? Not Wheeler or Ehlers so that immediately takes you out of the top 6. He also probably doesn't replace Roslo. Also, just because someone disagrees with you, does not make their opinion ridiculous.

Nobody was talking about him replacing anyone. This started by you claiming that one period went a long way in proving Armia couldn't play in the top 6 if given a chance.

It proved nothing, you can have your opinion.
