That's not true. There may have been some people who disliked it, but for the most part, Habs fans were excited about the trade.

I'm one of the pessimistic ones. What will be telling is how he responds when adversity hits. I guess the difference with me is that I hope I'm wrong while some others may want to be proven right at the expense of the club's fortunes.

I'm obviously encouraged so far.

He missed the start of season due to knee injury and they just lost a game allowing 9, and he's bounced back pretty well from those adversities.

What I mean is when his slumps happen. If he can stay physically and mentally fit as well.

What is encouraging is that hes going to get better 5 on 5 as he starts getting in his groove after so much time off. His struggling linemates don't help either but I certainly see upside on that front as he finds his stride.

Finally Laine has found a team where they realize he's a mostly just a PP cannon, and that's completely fine. Use his strengths and enjoy the goals.
134 EV and 70 PP goals until this year. Assists likewise 131 and 53. Nowhere close to a Draisaitl when it comes to reliance on PP goals.

Even if he scores all of his goals on PP this year it's still a false narrative, given he's well above 1 EV goal /60 in his career. Indeed more than MacKinnon or Draisaitl who don't really get the same labels.
So your issue is that he's more than just a PP Cannon. Fair enough, but that still might be his main attribute.

With Winnipeg Jets, on the powerplay, I always felt like both Scheifele and Wheeler intentionally avoided passing to Laine in such spots(btw many others Finnish fans felt the same even though Jets fans thought we were hallucinating) but seems like when you do pass to Laine, it might end well. Who knew?
I say this as a Laine fan….but he had the most PP goals in the league in 2017-18 and I’m pretty sure none of them were unassisted…so let’s not make stuff up.

it's quite refreshing to see players like Laine and Lane. They can carry the puck up the ice and deke players. it was subban, markov and price a decade ago.

Yeah, actually. It was Byfuglien and Scheifele. Wheeler was looking for Laine sometimes, but those are all cross-formation passes, and not the correct default way to set up Laine, which should be done via the defenseman in that formation, or by the shooter(Scheifele). Cross-formation passes shouldn't be a default option, but more situational, taking advantage of temporary lapses.

I watched all 44 of Laine's goals this season, and Laine has scored more such one timer goals this year for Montreal than he did all 17-18 season for Jets. Scheifele, of course, was never looking for him. He only had 1 assist that I could see, and he probably just passed to Laine by accident since I think that one was a blind pass. I bet he wouldn't have passed if he had noticed that it was Laine. Byfuglien, I think, only had 2 proper one time passes to Laine, so 2 out of 44 goals. Watch Ovechkin and the Caps play that power play and Carlson sets Ovechkin up for the one timer more times in one game than Byfuglien did Laine all season.
