I appreciate the love you are giving him. Truth is, he may not get us out of the bottom 6 or 7.

Habs have their own pick, Calgary's (almost likely depending on conditions), plus Habs 2nd and Pens 2nd. Possibility that they trade Savard, Dvorak and/or Armia for picks. I feel like we will likely move up somewhere, so it is a crap shoot picking really anything.

But, if we had 13 as our top pick hopefully Desnoyers or Hensler falls. Outside of them....take a stab at falling Ryabkin or grab Mrtka. Centres and Right D are our team need. We only bypass the need if we get an obvious BPA like Schaefer.

It’s just a little strange that after years of Habs fans espousing the virtue of doing a rebuild organically and valuing draft picks like gold to suddenly pivot and throw support behind an infidel who can derail the “proper” rebuild.

Happy for Laine though. He went through a lot. And it’s nice to finally see that the Habs have the player that Caufield should have been.

Montreal's doing the organic rebuild thing. They've stockpiled a ton of draft picks the last three years. Many are already on the team; a few more are coming in the next year or two.

The next stage of the rebuild is to see some incremental success. You want to see a few more wins from this very young roster; it's a sign the kids are developing. Laine isn't a kid, but ideally he can become one of the young vets of their future core.

As for Caufield, he's becoming exactly what Montreal hoped – a top goal-scorer. The kid's got 17 goals and is close to PPG.

Just prior trade there were lot of people pushing back, but once the price came out it quieted down a lot

They got a 26y player for free (got paid to take him) who at healthy can score 40 goals in this league

That’s what they’ve been trying to find through the draft and now just got gifted one

The thing of it is, they need a proper center. Those go high in the draft. That’s why falling might be painful. Cant even criticize them for not taking Wright. Cooley might have been nice though. But they need a top 6 center. The higher draft pick would be a big help.

Which is why we aren't too worried about winning games , probably still need another high talent piece from the draft. I think Habs fans are fine with bottoming out after the putrid start , worst case scenario for us would be as you say picking 13th or something but I doubt we get there

Caufield is fine.........17 goals and 29 pts in 31 games.
