Value of: Lafreniere?

Haven't we been through this one several times?

also the answer is exactly the same as the other times.

1. He isn't available
2. If he was available the offers would be less then The Rangers would want but more than teams would be willing to pay.

I'd trade him for a bag of those Peanut Butter & Jelly M&M'S. A big bag of course, I want to get value.

In a more serious answer, this might be this biggest and most important offseason. For a young player, he's been involved in some deeper playoff runs and limited off-season time.

His debut was halted by Covid, and and the 2020-2021 season started in January 2021. How much offseason training took place during Covid is anybody's guess. Rangers didn't make the playoffs, and the season ended in early July. Even ending later than normal, there should have been a decent off-season training, especially with no playoffs.

Rangers then made the conference finals 2 out of the next 3 seasons. Hopefully, he takes the same approach he did after they lost in the first round to NJ and has a real off-season training, showing up in good shape. Because here we are finally with ample amount of time during the offseason for a vacation to enjoy and real training.

The above isn't an excuse. This is on Laf to put in the work and he has 0 reason not to take advantage of this time off.

So the rangers are in a bit of a pickle. Do they give their protected 1st to the Pens or do they risk and give them and unprotected 26 1st in a much deeper draft. And Let’s be honest, they will probably tear it down

Would they be interested in something around that 1st for Lafreniere?

Would he be loved though? Habs are always the hardest on French players not living up to their potential
Lazy french yes , Players like Daneault, Carrier, Savard , Monty they don't get trash talks from the fans.
Players like Drouin , Brisebois ohh yes.

good teams likely find him not worth the cap, bad teams likely wouldn't want to trade their 1st
He'd still easily get a mid 1st and a decent prospect from a lot of teams.
Hell i'd give up the Habs 1st and a decent prospect.

Guess I don't see why? He's played 5 years in the NHL, he has 45 points on a mediocre team, he's hit 50 points once and 60 points never, he's a Wing who is not a big two-way guy. He went number 1 five years ago but there's a statute of limitations on that. Worth it in the hope he needs a change of scenery for cap space alone, but to trade a 1st and a decent prospect? Why?

tied for 34th in even strength scoring last year and tied for 40th this year. He has 45 points this year and all but 5 of them have come at EV. Give this guy PP1 time on a different team and he should produce at a significantly higher rate

Heavily attributable to playing with Panarin though

Biggest issue with the more powerplay theory is that he's objectively not been a productive player on a per 60 basis on the powerplay.

If you're asking if we would give up Laf to keep this years 1st, no we wouldn't. If you're asking if we would give up Laf to keep next years first, no we wouldn't. While that could end up biting us in the ass for 2026, it's too risky to make that move. But there's no a chance we do it for the 2025.

Sure, but thats a risk you take. No team bringing him in is asking him to become the face of their franchise, it would be in hopes he can play fiddle as the #2/3 guy.

Makes no sense for the Rangers to trade Lafreniere. Lots of teams would want him though. I’d say he’s worth a mid first and a good prospect.

I meant is a way would it be a starting point. But as of right now the rangers hold pick 11, which great chance it is pick 11. It becomes their choice if they want to keep it or chance 26 which is unprotected. I imagine they could potentially tear it down and rebuild after then collapse of a season. So that 26 1st has a good chance of being top 10 in a much deeper draft.

Fair, but Laf wouldn't have the same expectations of a Danault, Savard, etc. He'd be expected to be a star just like Jo was

I am sure some teams would offer a lot for him, because he was a high draft pick and some teams just can't quit that type of thing.

that doesn't mean he will be anything more than what he is now.

Aren't the rangers one of those teams that don't even use the 2nd PP. Most of the toi is probably retrieving it with 20 seconds less
