I didn't see this mentioned... might have just missed it, but the only two 1st overall picks to not play immediately in the NHL in the last 20 years are Alex Ovechkin and Erik Johnson... and Ovechkin would have if there had been a 2004-05 season... so it's really just Johnson. And no one within the last 10 years. Even the lesser 1st overalls, like Hischier, play right away.

It's a perfectly reasonable assumption that he'll be on the team opening night... nothing about arrogance or laziness. Confidence, maybe... but nothing else.
That’s a good point. I wasn’t aware of that!

Lafreniere is confident. That's part of who he is as a player.

That's also what gives him a chance to be a special player.

I don't need any more of the get-a-long gang. We've been there.

It's charming. It warms the heart. It makes people smile.

But I am perfectly fine having some guys out there who dare the other team to beat them on the ice. Swagger is a good thing.

yeah I get the feeling someone would have to blow the Rangers away with an offer and someone like Ottawa is the only team with the resources to make that offer (3 and 5) but they'd still need to sweeten the deal with a top prospect or young player and at some point it just starts not working for Ottawa. Having picks 3 and 5 is fantastic...but when there's a clearcut #1 you're risking on losing out on a franchise player for "just" a star player, and maybe a decent player.

Like Ottawa isn't going to offer 3, 5 and Tkachuk. They probably wouldn't even offer 3 and Tkachuk. The Rangers probably aren't going to take a deal of 3 and 5 (because they'd miss out on Byfield most likely) but legitimately adding more to that starts not making sense for Ottawa.

So...a deal like that is real toug hto make I think

Which would be my exact asking price.

You can’t compare wings to centers.

I'm not. I'm comparing 2 drafts where the top player is significantly better and the team isn't reaching for organizational need.

Let's put it this way: Washington didn't settle for center Malkin in 2004, but picked winger Ovechkin instead. Better?

John Davidson couldn’t look at the television screen during the NHL draft lottery Monday night. But David Quinn did and it nearly landed him on the Rangers’ injured reserve.

“I almost pulled a hamstring jumping out of my chair when I saw that ping pong ball shoot up that little shoot there,” the Rangers coach said on MSG Network’s “Around the NHL,” which was set to air at 6:30 p.m. Friday night. “Obviously it was a week of highs and lows. And to then have that happen Monday night, really switched things a little bit. It made everyone feel good.”

You guys are way too concerned about the center position—w/r/t Lafreniere and just in general.

No one ever even elaborates as to why centers are so much more valuable than wingers.

Oilers picked Hall over Seguin
Caps picked Ovechkin over Malkin
Blackhawks picked Kane over Turris
Thrashers picked Kovalchuk over Spezza

Sometimes the winger who is ranked no 1 is just the better player. The Taylor vs Tyler draft was probably the closest

The position debate is one of those issues that doesn’t appear to be nearly the debate internally that it is externally.

Lafreniere is at the top of the Rangers list.

Unless it comes out that he makes lamp shades out of people, or someone offers the Rangers a video game like return, he’s going to be the pick.

People saying lazy or arrogant are so removed from reality its ridiculous lol
Even if he is a little arrogant, is that such a bad thing? We need some of that on this team and in this organization in general. Need people who think they can win every game with some attitude. Need to establish a culture, maybe this kids competiveness rubs off on everybody

I don’t see the downside in drafting someone who makes lamp shades out of people.
