ALEXIS LAFRENIÈRE (1y @ $0.925m) then RFA

for

ANDREI KUZMENKO (1y @ $0.95m)

Nils Höglander (RFA 2023, waiver exempt until summer 2023)
Michael DiPietro (RFA 2023, waiver exempt until summer 2023)

EDIT Nov 07 2022 --> replace DiPietro with 2023 VAN 2ND

The base of the deal is Lafrenière for Höglander plus.

Kuzmenko plays for the Rangers now in a middle 6 winger role. Höglander either plays for the Rangers or plays top line minutes in the AHL, whatever NYR prefers. DiPietro becomes the NYR #3 goalie right now and then Shesterkin's backup next year when Halák leaves.

It's possible that Höglander fits well on the Rangers' second line by playoff time. He looked great at training camp. “I was going to say, let me talk about Hogs because I think he's the best player on the ice right now,” Boudreau said Friday after the second day of camp.

Lafrenière plays in the top 6 in Vancouver with 1st unit PP time, and is given more ice time and responsibility over the next 2 years as Boeser and Pearson are traded away to start the rebuild. Lafrenière, Podkolzin and Lekkerimäki become the future of Vancouver's winger position.

NYR have no interest in moving Laf, despite what HFB posters read into his counting stats

Podkolzin, Hoglander and a 1st, ie a hard to ignore\refuse offer, is a fair starting point if Canucks feel need to bring in a Canadian recent 1stOA

otherwise, just let things be

This makes no sense for the Rangers at all. Trading a recent, very recent first overall who is finally getting to level of play expected of him for an undrafted 26 year old as the main piece coming back?

I'm not a Vancouver fan (or a Rangers fan). I follow all the teams, cheer for TOR and PIT.
Yikes. Maybe stick to making Toronto proposals. This is downright awful for the Rangers. And I hate the Rangers.

Kuzmenko has played 7 NHL games and looked ok. He’s also UFA at the end of the season and can walk.
Hoglander is a decent young player who really struggled last season.
DePietro is an undersized 3rd string AHL goalie who’s a stones throw away from ending up in the ECHL. He’s worth nothing. So your proposal essentially comes down to Lafreniere for Hoglander. Rangers pass on this so fast it would make your head spin

Which doesn’t seem like a bad offer in theory as long as the 1st isn’t Vancouvers 1st and actually a pick in mid teens/late teens

Not sure about this, but one thing I will say, if Kuzmenko becomes available someone better snatch this guy up.

His stats do not tell the whole story, he really looks like a dangerous scorer when he is on the ice paired with other offensive players. And his personality makes him an instant fan favourite. I really like this guy in Vancouver, and while I hope it doesn't come to trading him, I understand that if we keep down the path we are heading in now it will be the best decision.

What would you want for him?
