Which is (probably) entirely borne out of getting more saves when he is on the ice rather than any actual ability. He's just marginally luckier than the other guys he is on the ice with! Rooney was our worst penalty killer in terms of scoring chances last year, and this year he's damn near the bottom again! And how much time has Backlund spend away from Rooney on the PK? Probably minimal given they've been attached to the hip on the top unit. That is why I mentioned last years numbers when he was with Coleman... when he's the usual Backs that season!

I will clarify that Rooney isn't the only reason our PK has sucked, because I think you know as well as I do that goaltending plays an oversized role in that. But he's definitely been a major part of it. Again, he's a middle six AHL player who isn't good defensively and sucks in the dot. The results speak for themselves. And you are right, I don't care that the (likely extraordinarily small sample) stats show Backs as a worse PKer this year, because I've been watching the guy for a decade and know that is total bullshit. You don't want to give credence to the qualitative stuff, that's fine, but you are right that there is no room for me to budge there.

You give out line combos showing Rooney with a 53xGF%, but I'm rightfully going to be skeptical as to how much that claim matters because their individual rates are terrible! So what does that probably mean? It means you are putting too much stake on small f***ing sample sizes showing decent results for that line (or the data is just wrong)! Could I be wrong though? Maybe. But I've seen enough of the player to trust my assessment. No stats necessary to defend that argument lol.
53 minutes with him, 33 minutes without him. So 60% of his time compared to 40% of his time, or a significant sample size. Getting more saves doesn’t account for improved scoring chance rates and xGA rates either. The results don’t speak for themselves in regards to your point which is the ironic part.

Any stat can be skewed, just like individual rates can be. A player like Rooney can have his results tanked by being a low minute 5v5 player but a high minute 4v5 player. Successful PKs are generally still hemmed in after a successful kill, which leads to bleeding chances against “5v5”. Players with low 5v5 minutes will see their numbers effected a lot more by this effect than players with high 5v5 minutes. Things like that can result in Rooney having a 38% xGF rate, despite his 3 most common lines by minutes owning a 53.2, 34.5 , and a 60 xGF% respectively.

You’ve been extremely vocal about your dislike for Rooney, just like your extremely vocal dislike for Lucic and Huberdeau. Huberdeau is having himself a year so you’ve been extremely quiet on his front, but Rooney hasn’t been as overtly terrible as you want him to be either.

Kevin Rooney is no good. I don't know how he tricks some of you and the coaching staff into thinking he's even somewhat passable at this level.

He's not intimidating in the slightest.
He's weak in the dot.
He's got terrible metrics.
He's got zero offensive talent.
He's not a standout on the PK.

The guy has a GA/60 of 6.17 over the last 16 games in all situations. Averaging a goal against per game in that time. Outscored 9-3 at five on five, too.

Just not good enough, and never has been.
