GDT: La Quinta Team Meetings

Many of the teams have their team meetings away from their home base. I heard MacTavish last week say the Oilers had their meetings in California. When Neil Smith was running the Rangers, the meetings were in Key West,Florida. Smith had a home in Key West. They play golf. Discuss hockey. You would have to believe most of the work heading into these meetings has already been done. They set up the draft board. They were at the scouting combine two weeks ago. The Rangers don't have a pick in the 1st or 2nd rounds. They discuss possible trades. The Rangers could swap 2 of the 3 3rds for a 2nd and still have a 3rd. The Rangers have coaches to interview. Sather and Gorton(who handles the contract negotiations)know how much the group IIs will cost.

Sather has a home there, what does it matter?

He's got a home in NY too. In fact, he's got a multi-billion dollar facility with offices and conferecne rooms at his disposal 24/7.

It's just another case of him isolating himself. He's been pulling these antics since the day he got here. He loves his Ivory Towers -- Banff, Hilton Head, La Quinta.

He still thinks its 1984 where Edmonton Journal reporters camp out in front of his homes for pics and quotes. Too bad its 2013 and most media outlets dont have the budget to even care whatever decisions come out of these self-important meetings.

Where did Chiarelli hold his "meetings" last offseason? Hong Kong?

Bingo.

The meeting is about more meetings. It's not like Heydrich on the Wansee. They dont need to go to La Quinta to figure out what they're going to do with Richards, coaching, Henrik etc.

They're going there to BS. Some people act like there's going to be some big announcement the day the meetings end.

Most businesses do something like this. I know mine does.

It's nice to get away from the office and do stuff outside of your normal surroundings. These guys work hard, even though many here don't think so. They put in long hours, so what they want to discuss this stuff over golf and some cocktails near the beach. I see no problem with that.

I mean the meeting is at his house, it's not like they are splurging and renting out the 4 seasons for a month.

What is with some fans obsession with Mess taking over any position with the Rangers? I'd rather have people with some experience and knowledge of the business side than some ex player in charge, no matter how good they are or what they did for the team.

Agreed. Get away from nyc, enjoy the sun, get some vacation time when they can. Don't understand the problem with them being in Cali, away from the office and normal surroundings.

It's apparent you dislike Sather, which is justified, but in this case I think you're just digging deep to find another gripe. Literally who cares where they meet? So far only you, which is your right. I just don't see it as a big deal.

If your employer offered you the choice of coming into the office and having meetings or going on a short trip to have those same meetings while unwinding after a years worth of work which would you choose?

Who specifically is this referring to?

Anyone. Just seems Messier comes up a lot. I could understand why some people want him, but it seems every open position brings Messier into it somehow. The guy has coached 2 low level international tournies and is a "special assistant" to Slats, Maybe let him prove himself at lower levels before he's thrown into the NHL in NYC

I haven't seen a Ranger fan who wants Messier to be the coach or GM.

Maybe it's just some of the people I know, some stuff I've seen on here sometimes. I think it mainly stems from the fact I was almost 3 when they won the cup and could care less about most of the players from that team.

I like Sather. Always have. Go back in other threads. I defend his moves, drafts, etc.

The one dislike I have is that he doesnt embrace being a GM in this town, and he's got one of the most irrelevant jobs in terms of public interest. Still, he has a responsibility, and he goes out of his way to avoid it.

It's not just the meeting. The way he operates is wrong for a public sports figure in this town. He isolates himself from the public, and the owner lets him do it.

There's a thread about the stupid meeting. I mean, please.

This has always been an issue with me. He is the general manager of a NYC sports team. Yet you NEVER hear from him. Once a year, he'll give a state of the union press conference, then retreats back into isolation. How often do you hear from and read quotes from Cashman, Isiah, Alderson, et al? What's incredible is that the media lets him get away with it. He must send a helluva gift basket.

In that case then I see your point, he's never been real public as far as I know. Seems to have made himself available a little more the last few years though. But now I understand.

No, I don't think that's it. I greatly appreciate Messier's contributions as a Ranger player, and many others here do as well. I don't want him to be coach, however.

What?

McIlrath, Miller, Kreider aren't small or soft. Let's give them more then a half season to develop in the NHL before damning them as "passive personalities".

Gorton was responsible for bringing to Boston Chara, Rask, Lucic, Marchand, Seguin, Hamilton...

You would be the only one not feeling comfortable with Gorton.

Great, you point to three prospects from recent drafts, but pld was talking about all the prospects who've been drafted since Gorton got here. And I don't care who he got for Boston (UFA or drafting wise), that doesn't help the Rangers.

Not that it will happen, but I'd rather see a completely different group of people running this organization: 13 years is long enough.

On the rare occasions that Slats makes himself accessible to the media, his answers are brief and lacking detail. He even admitted he was being vague during the Torts presser two weeks ago. The Rangers organization is more secretive and less forthcoming than any of the other teams I follow.

2008 or 2009 would have been the 1st draft he was apart of with the NYR.

...and what was the ONE time we heard from Sather this year, aside from when he dismissed his coach? After the Cap series!

So Sather completely isolates himself from Ranger fans, which I suppose is his right (but not necessarily a good business decision), but when does he come out and show his face? When the team does the one thing it did right all season.

Thanks Glen...be there to take credit, but slink away any time things are not going well.

Grunwald is now GM of the Knicks. Not Isiah. He hardly speaks to media either. Think it's a Dolan thing. Slats is happy to not to have to answer to the media, though.

I could care less if the GM wants to talk to the media a lot or not at all. Getting info the fans is not his concern nor should it be. He talks after signings and trades and at the end of the season. That's the only time we need to hear from him.

What???

I dont care if Sather locked himself in a closet for the last 13 years. He needs to stop making stupid decisions.
