Kings Article: LA Kings Rob Blake And That Big Elephant In The Room

I think this quote is quite important in the article, It's a ringing endorsement from Brown. We as fans don't have all the info.

What is Brown going to say?

"You would never catch ME ripping the C off of MY jersey!"

Come on, now. Gann interviewed people inside the Kings organization where Blake is currently the AGM, along with Mattias Norstrom, who is clearly Blake's biggest supporter. You ain't gonna get a whole lotta dissension given that scenario, especially this week.

The only place you will hear anything negitive is from some die hard fans. And the important thing is some other die hard fans don't care. No casual fan is even going to raise and eye about it.

I'm over it for the most part, however I don't think Blake is, which makes it tough for some fans to forgive him for his past transgressions.

Case in point there was that puff piece the other day about Blake, Emerson and Murray surfing everyday, they interviewed Emerson and Murray but Blake was nowhere near that piece, like Kingsholygrail posted he needs to engage the fans and show that its in the past but his actions and body language in public says otherwise.

It's like when people bring up similar circumstances that happened with Robitaille and him going to the Red Wings to win a cup with them. Why isn't that more controversial? Because Luc embraced fans and never shied away from it even if there were fans that may be(and some here still are) upset with him over leaving the Kings. He's very engaging and ever gracious. Rob Blake is a ghost in this organization.

He doesn't have to say anything much. The usual throw away answer of he's a great player. He volunteered that there was more to the situation than we as fans are privy to.

Ive decided i'm just gonna do what the vid says

I never had any hate towards him, but I do still resent his actions and think he is undeserving of having his jersey retired. He isn't on par with the other numbers hanging in the rafters. I'll admit that he is one of the best defensemen to ever play for this team and he played many games here, but that alone shouldn't guarantee him a spot up there. Either way, it is done now, there is nothing we can do but accept it and move on.

Pretty much this. Most of it at the time went over my head because I was younger and didn't have the access to Kings coverage I have nowadays, but the result of his trade stung at the time. As I learned the behind the scenes story I wasn't very impressed, but what can you do. Time passes.

So the people who know him the best and are privy to information that we aren't should be discounted and fans who aren't privy to should be considered to be more reliable? That's really what is being said here.

The story is that both sides were at fault. Blake was being controlled by the NHLPA. They were calling the shots on his side. AEG was the primary mover and shaker behind geting player salaries under control, at the time. Both sides contributed to Blake's departure. To blame it on Blake is one of those falsehoods that just won't die. Both sides share the blame equally.

The blame breakdown

49% Kings/AEG
49% Blake/NHLPA
2% Gann

You are discounting the fact that those inside the organization are politically barred from saying anything even remotely negative towards the guy.

It's not a black-and-white world, Gann. There are all kinds of shades of gray going on here.

No, but they would know far more about it than you or I would. They were there. They saw it first-hand.

You seem to be missing my point.

The fact that they would know more about it than either I or you would (and of course, you would know more than I would given your reporter position) cannot be and is not disputed.

What I am saying is despite their knowledge of the given situation, they are limited in what they can publicly say due to the sensitive nature of Blake's position in the organization.

Not to be the conspiracy theorist here, but I think the real reason why he is getting his jersey retired is because someone is OCD that works for the Kings and wants equal amounts of banners on each side.

Just sayin....

Whoever has that OCD must be pissed off that Robitaille will be the only jersey hanging there with purple numbers on white. Just go silver and black, Luc... because my eye is twitching.

What they are saying publicly hasn't changed since 2001, so no, that's incorrect.

I don't have hate for Rob Blake not do I think he needs to come out and apologies or clear the air. I just feel that this honor should be just for the guys that are all about this hockey club or spend the whole careers with that team on top of playing top notch throughout most of it. I have gone to game since the 70's and have been a STH since the mid 80's, I have been to every jersey retirement ceremony but on sat I will stay at my car having some beers until game time then I will come in to watch true Kings play.

I am really looking forward to his speech. So many different ways it could go. I have a hunch which way it'll transpire.

No that's not what was being said there he was making the point of what do you think those people are going to say leading into a night where he's have his jersey retired of coarse no body is going to speak bad at that time. Also for the players it's a job and that stuff is all part of it but for the fans it's very personnel and after all that has gone down I could not see how any King fan would hold Blake in the same light as any of the guys who are already hanging in the rafters. Marcel cried the day he left this organization and Blake ran off very happy.

Another example of the fans thinking they know everything. Blake, Luc and Matti Norstrom all cried the day the trade was announced. Ask Helene Elliott, she wrote about it when it all broke down.

It was an emotional departure for Blake, but people with selective memory won't remember that.

I'm aware of the NHLPA involvement and all the other static. I resented them controlling him, but I also disapproved of his being controlled. Like I said, not impressed with anyone involved.

I just want an apology. "I'm sorry when i stepped down from being the Captain and made everything about myself instead of the playoff run. That was selfish, it harmed the team and I can understand why fans that are passionate about this team were angry."

If he said that, I would forgive him. But to this day he acts like he did nothing wrong, even though he set the franchise back a decade with his actions.

Get over yourself...

Should management apologize too for icing some sh@&*y teams?
