Hey guys, Coyotes fan here coming in peace :)

I'm a graphic designer with a love of sports uniforms, and over the years I've produced a lot of NHL concepts. I will be creating a bunch more in the coming months, but I wanted to share what I have been working on for the Kings with you all and generate some discussion about it.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the color purple in sports, I know it's not always seen as "intimidating" but I think we need a little injection of color in an overwhelmingly red, blue, and black NHL. I also love the classic Kings throwbacks that y'all have sometimes worn in recent years.

All of that led me to decide to completely shift the direction for the Kings... with all new colors, uniforms, logos, fonts, and more.

Check out the concept at...

I also describe my thoughts about it in more detail at that Behance link.. but hopefully we can get some discussion going about it in this thread and I'll share more background with y'all!

Thanks,

Elliott

The color purple is banned from our everyday jerseys. For special 3rd jersey nights we might play a game with retro jerseys with purple on them, kinda how we may dress in green jerseys on St. Patrick's day but that color disappears when it's the playoffs.

The Kings organization associate losing with the color purple and winning with silver, black and white.

I agree with them.

On the other hand, Zoltar was cool in Big.

It's not even that it is purple, it is the fact it is a pastel purple.

I appreciate your effort, and I consider myself to be pretty open-minded.....but I absolutely hate that.

Very much appreciate the effort and I fully agree that purple (and hell, even the sparkly silver) was nice to have for variety in the NHL. I also very much appreciate that it's not a subtle change but rather a very bold one. Can't say I'm a fan, though, mostly because I really dislike the shade of light purple (even though it's listed as royal which I always imagined to be deeper) and the fonts involved (which again I respect as being progressive rather than traditional but it's a huge jump for my eyes!).

I will say though, as positive feedback, that I actually really like that deeper purple and old gold. If the Kings were ever to pay homage to the old colors while at the same time changing them (obviously unlikely), I'd like those ones, very royalty-inspired. And again, props for the bold redesign, but the fonts with the little slot missing and light purple just distract the hell out of me.

I am a fan of the original colors and I was a proponent of going back to purple and gold before we won the cup. Now that's hard to do because our brand is much more cemented.

The logo doesn't look that great though, it feels like it is a symbol in a pokemon game or something like that. Not that our logo is fantastic, but that one just seems not serious at all and too whimsical. I'm sure our rivals would love it... :P

I love the effort and the fonts are bad, my only reservation is the logo, and also that it seems 3-4 years too late. The last change we made, I suspect, is going to last for a long while given that it now resonates with the new success of the franchise. I don't think Robitaille is going to look into changing the brand in the near future as long as the team is contending.

I did previously say that Black/Silver/White started becoming this for the LA Kings franchise since the Gretzky era and now became this since 2012, even though the late Jack Kent Cooke ordered purple and gold as the team colors of both the Kings and the Lakers; it's as if he wanted to emulate the Pittsburgh sports tradition of having all the pro sports teams, sharing the same colors.

What's even worse was the East Coast Bias' ignorant notion of "OMG! KINGS STOLE LAKER COLORS!!!" :shakehead:facepalm:

No, but we do steal the lake water out of No. Cal...must be why the Sharks flounder every year.

With graphic design, it's important to remember that, oftentimes, less is more.....

appreciate the effort, but i agree with everyone else and this isn't the right direction.

this 'debate' rages on seemingly forever within the Kings fan world-scape. don't know if it is a 50-50 split between the traditionalists and the black/whites, but both side is never happy with the other.

i can't see any of your ideas generating interest. for starters none of the art, colors or fonts are reflective of ANY of the past or present Kings uniforms.

we have debated for years about black/white and purple/gold. one is seen as winning and the other as a dumpster fire when it comes to success.

personally i think they need to go back to the purple/gold and incorporate the black/white as a 3rd jersey for play on Sundays(?). the same way that MLB teams worked 'batting practice' warm up jerseys into the mix.

far too much black in the current Kings uniform and the NHL as a whole. watch this season when LA skates out in those new gold Legends jerseys, jaws will drop simply because the league is devoid of color. the purple Legends jersey is a huge favorite around the league with even non-Kings fans, now watch and see what the gold will do.

the purple and gold Kings fans want has and will be seen shortly. stick with those colors so the color palette remains, tweaking the fonts and crown of past then you might gain some support.
