Not too bad if Kempe and Gravel are exempt. I guess Gravel is exempt because his first year was with Manchester?

As far as I can tell, it only says first and second year professionals. Gravel is certainly not exempt. For Kempe, it all depends if they count 14-15 when he played 3 regular season and 17 playoff games in Manchester. If that counts, he is not exempt.

I'm pretty sure Kempe played those games on an amatur try out deal. So Kempe should be exempt.

"Professional" means how it is defined in the CBA. Gravel probably isn't exempt because AHL experience counts (but leagues like the KHL do not). The rules also seem to depend on age to some extent. Kempe may be safe but I don't see how Gravel would be unless...Capfriendly has both exempt, that only makes sense to me if "professional" means under an NHL contract. Gravel had an AHL contract for his first year.

Just more clarification, according to Bill Daly its professional experience under NHL contract. So, both Kempe and Gravel will be exempt.

So would guys like Forbort, Dowd, or any kid on the farm need protecting??? or is it just guys on the Kings roster?????

If so i'd be for the 8+1, option B....
Kopitar
Carter
Pearson
Toffoli
Doughty
Muzzin
Amart
McNabb
Quick

while exposing Brown, Gabby, Greene......

Forbert and Dowd need protecting. Any player that signed with the Kings and has played 3 years or more in the AHL/NHL. Gravel is exempt because his 3 years in the AHL won't include the first year because he played under an AHL contract with Manchester.

Now I'm not sure again on Kempe. Apparently he signed with the Kings before he played those playoff games in Manchester so that looks like 3 seasons to me (unless there was a age/game limit factor).

i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
ii) Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

Also found this... which is even more clear in regards to AHL players...

Players with two years of professional experience or less will be exempt from the process. Determining who that covers is based on the definition included in the collective bargaining agreement – meaning that 10 games played in the NHL at age 18 or 19 counts as a season, as does any American Hockey League or NHL season for players older than that.

I think Kempe is still exempt because his 3 year nhl contract wasn't effective till the 2015-16 season. Only time in the AHL under an NHL contract counts.

yeah your right, this would be his second season and be exempt, Gravel, Forbort, Mersch, and Dowd would all need to be protected however, as they have completed 2 season.. Therefore, I'm thinking Greene, Brown and Gabby will be our minimum exposure players and depending on how the Forbort-Gilbert pairing do we could go with the 7-3-1 option while hoping LV takes a run at either one of Gabby or Brownie....

Also HookKing, can you elaborate a bit more on how the NHL/AHL contract stipulation works???

Nothing counts unless you have signed an NHL contract. Any time in the NHL or AHL counts once you have signed that NHL contract. The reason Kempe is exempt is because his contract didn't start until the 2015-16 season. Consequently he will only have two professional years.

Gravel is exempt even though he has played 3 seasons in the AHL because the first year was an AHL contract (with Manchester not LA) so he too has just two professional seasons.

Glad it's not just AHL time, but time under NHL contract. I doubt that Vegas would pick a guy who never played in the NHL, but still it would suck to have to expose those types of players with lots of upside.
