According to Kypreos, Leafs offer was Cowen, Minten, and 2 1sts.

They were also all in for signing him between 13-13.5 per for 8 years.

Carolina decided they didn’t want to maybe face him in the playoffs and wanted to send him west for what they considered a lesser offer.

THIS SITE WOULD HAVE IMPLODED!

Imagine a top six of:

Knies - Matthews- Marner
Rantanen- Tavares-Nylander

On top of that, they apparently would have had enough for Laughton as well but not Carlo.

McMann-Laughton-Domi
Jarnkrok-Kampf-Holmberg

What could have been 🤦

Shows that Carolina holds the skater in high regard to not want to deal with him as much into the future.

Pretty hard for the league to not see the spectacle it would have generated. Nobody can make money selling tickets like Toronto.

I don’t know if they considered it a lesser offer. It’s been reported that they felt Stankoven was the very best piece dangled their way. And it’s hard to argue that he wasn’t.
Not only that... but this is a "recovery job" by Carolina.

To trade Rantanen without getting a single piece that will help them this year/ replace Necas was problematic.

Stankoven gives them a guy that the team can still be excited about.

If Toronto wanted Rantanen then I’m going to suggest that Carolina would have talked about Knies and given Necas and Rantanen’s playstyle; you’d have to guess that’s the kind of thing that would have done the deed or at least is something that would get Carolina’s attention.

I don’t blame Toronto for passing on something like that.

Nothing really. Still a first round exit.

The difference between Cowen and Stankoven isn’t Minten as it stands right now, though it’s not out of the realm of possibility Cowen becomes a better player one day. But Kyprios is also full of shit.

The combo of Cowen and Minton exceeds Stankoven on his own imo
I just posted what’s been reported that they felt about the offers. Not what you or I felt about the offers. They felt that Stankoven was the best value offered to them.

A comparable to Dallas's offer would've been Knies, 2 1sts, and 2 3rds. Knies and Stankoven are comparable talents in terms of market value, though I'm personally higher on Stankoven (who wasn't attached to center talents close to Matthews in Dallas but still produced well). Offering Minten and Cowan instead of Knies would've been laughed out the door because Carolina clearly wanted an impact youngster who is playing and producing in the league right now.

I agree Stankoven is likely valued more than Cowan + Minten, but he doesn't touch Knies

Knies produces significantly more while being a powerforward who PKs. He's a unicorn in this league and is only a sophomore

Kypreos comes off as a guy that makes shit up that you can't prove one way or another because he has to stay relevant or he will be fired again.
People keep saying this and while I understand it, he actually has sources in Toronto ever since Treliving became GM

He called the Matthews captaincy a month out, he called Nylander's cap signing (I think), he called Toronto in on Rantanen long before Friedman or McKenzie, he called them dealing Minten a week before it happened

He knows what's going on with the Leafs
