After tonight’s game should be no doubt remaining that Burroughs should be ahead of Schenn on the depth chart.

does anyone who argues that the Canucks are a “meritocracy” want to bet that things will play out this way?

would bet $100 Schenn makes the team ahead of Burroughs regardless.
This is exactly what will happen. I would be incredibly surprised if they actually rewarded Burroughs based on his play.

they've shown in some circumstances to be willing to give the guys who surprised at training camp jobs as long as it doesn't come at the expense of a fresh big acquisition

schenn was signed as a depth defender so i don't really see the argument in this case

but who knows

Pigs will fly in a frozen hell before they cut Schenn. It's Schaller all over again - the guy is instantly obviously crap but the over/under will be 1.5 years into the 2 year deal before there's even a murmur about cutting him.

I do want to give them the benefit of the doubt but it seems like one of those situations where Schenn is ingrained in the coaching staff's head as THE Hamonic replacement, which is dumb. I don't see them putting Burroughs on the starting roster over Schenn.

well i mean - who says he has to take schenn's roster spot?

they could just run 13f 8d to start with and then keep up 4/5 of schenn, hunt, rathbone, juolevi, burroughs

So, Burroughs got the surprise start. There were a few positive comments in the game day thread, but nothing very detailed about his game. Anybody?

Brought good energy. Better offensive instincts than you would expect. Worked well with Rathbone. At times they got a bit overwhelmed in the defensive zone but that isn't going to change with any of the 4 guys (Burroughs, Rathbone, Schenn, Hunt) on that pairing. But they held their own reasonably well in the 10-12 minutes they likely had.

Thanks for that report. It'll be interesting to see if Green sticks with them, and, if so, whether they can grow as a pairing.

Burroughs, if he can play solid for a 6RD, would be great for us. Local Vancouver boy, natural RHS and best of all $750k cap hit.
One thing ive noticed is that his head is always on a swivel. Which is obviously something all dmen do ... its a must have lol... but even when under pressure and only 1 second to make a decision he's always looking all over the place, it allows him to relieve pressure and turn the tide moving forward , even with 2 forecheckers and a 3rd guy high. How many times last year did our D turn the puck over when faced with a hard forecheck.
Watch for it against Philly... you'll notice it and be like "oh yeah, that guy on HF was right"

I was pleasantly surprised with Burroughs. I thought he looked great for the Canucks last night. At times he looked overwhelmed a little defensively, but what defense doesn't get overwhelmed playing against the likes of McDavid, Draisaitl, Hopkins and Co. Burroughs also would occasionally pinch and create some scoring pressure. I never knew or heard of this player before he signed with the Canucks, but thus far I really like what I'm seeing in this Canucks defensive project. He could eventually develop into a hometown favorite on the backend.

Green on Burroughs:
“[Burroughs] quietly had a poised game,” said Green. “He made some subtle nice plays. Kind of what you'd want to see out of a young D. Didn't make any glaring mistakes and sometimes when you don't notice a guy a whole lot in the game, that's not a bad thing. That's a good thing for a young defenceman.”

Miles ahead of a guy like Chatfield. Heads up player. Tools look limited but he can think the game in the d-zone and knows to be conservative.

Keep him ahead of Schenn but ideally he’s a 7/8 Dman.

That shouldn't be hard. Bowey is ahead of chatfield and bowey isn't and nhl defenseman.

Burroughs has looked perfectly fine for a guy most ppl never heard of, and seemingly played his way into an nhl job and salary. Well done.

Liked his game yesterday.

Bonus is that he's from the Isles system which has absolutely pumped out previously unheralded defenseman, so fingers crossed that he actually gets some bottom pairing playing time. If he can keep it up, that's a nice third pairing with Rathbone.

A lot of d-men just seem to plateau during their time in the AHL, but Burroughs appears to be the exception. Although he's still only 26, he spent five seasons in the Islanders organization, and then last year more time with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL and only five games with the Av's.

In his first season as a pro, he actually spent half a season in the ECHL with the Kansas City Mavericks, not unlike another guy named 'Burrows'. And at 6', 183, he isn't the biggest guy in the world.

Basically topped out as a 20-point d-man in the minors so there's nothing about his game that screams 'NHL'. But clearly the Canucks were watching and seeing the improvement every year.

So he was signed for defensive depth and was probably ticketed for Abbotsford, before having a solid training camp. He's a true pro hockey 'survivor, and you hope he can make it. Not many do after six AHL seasons.

But of interest, the other Burrows (Alex), finally arrived for his first full NHL season in 2006-07 as a 26-year old right winger, and was stamped as nothing more than an AHL-NHL bubble guy. But the rest as they say, is Canuck history. So you just never know.

I mean what is the point of this. Does anyone seriously believe the team would go with Burroughs over Schenn if Burroughs plays better in pre-season? Anyone want to put any money on it? There is zero chance it will happen, and, no, the Canucks don't do this to veteran players whom they just signed. Tim Schaller was a completely useless plug right out of the gate who looked like a crappy AHL player in camp and still was gifted a spot on the roster and played about 25 terrible games before he was finally scratched. After getting him in the Toffoli trade, the Kings played him 2 games and then sent him to the AHL, from which he never returned.

These aged well, lol.

Not sure what to make of Burroughs. He played well last game. But in his last preseason game I was ready to declare that he's belongs in the AHL and should be sent down.

Game 2 under his belt as a Canuck. Another solid, steady performance.
No glaring mistakes... its sad but being happy to have a a guy like that on the right side (low event player) is nice (especially at $750k)

This guy is playing better than Hamonic right now. Pretty steady and is covering for Rathbone well.

What a gem. Hope he keeps it up.
