A lot of d-men just seem to plateau during their time in the AHL, but Burroughs appears to be the exception. Although he's still only 26, he spent five seasons in the Islanders organization, and then last year more time with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL and only five games with the Av's.
In his first season as a pro, he actually spent half a season in the ECHL with the Kansas City Mavericks, not unlike another guy named 'Burrows'. And at 6', 183, he isn't the biggest guy in the world.
Basically topped out as a 20-point d-man in the minors so there's nothing about his game that screams 'NHL'. But clearly the Canucks were watching and seeing the improvement every year.
So he was signed for defensive depth and was probably ticketed for Abbotsford, before having a solid training camp. He's a true pro hockey 'survivor, and you hope he can make it. Not many do after six AHL seasons.
But of interest, the other Burrows (Alex), finally arrived for his first full NHL season in 2006-07 as a 26-year old right winger, and was stamped as nothing more than an AHL-NHL bubble guy. But the rest as they say, is Canuck history. So you just never know.
