Ryan and Ozzy were walking in their neighborhood on Aug. 13 when an out-of-control vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and struck them. Both were rushed to the emergency room and taken to the intensive care unit with severe injuries.

According to a GoFundMe set up to benefit the Brodziaks, Ryan suffered a significant spinal cord injury and multiple fractures in his spine. Ozzy sustained a skull fracture and a fractured left arm.

Ryan has suffered a significant spinal cord injury, resulting in multiple fractures to his spine. As of now, he remains paralyzed and is awaiting emergency surgery. Ozzy sustained a skull fracture and a fractured left arm and is currently under close observation in the Stollery.

Ryan’s surgery will involve removing bone from his back to relieve swelling and placing metal rods and screws in an attempt to stabilize his spine. It is uncertain if Ryan will regain mobility. Meanwhile, Ozzy continues to be monitored at the Stollery and is in stable condition.
We are grateful to share that Gouda has been released from the emergency vet and is now in the care of family.

For those who don’t know Ryan, he is a pillar of the Edmonton community. As the former owner and operator of beloved local restaurants like The Local Omnivore, Gravy, and Gorilla, Ryan has touched many lives. He is a loving husband, a new dad, and one of the kindest souls you could ever meet. Ryan co-organizes an annual Bikeathon to raise funds for Edmonton’s unhoused community and is always the first to lend a hand or donate to someone in need.
