Kulemin (still) depressed?

There is nothing wrong with Kolya's play.

He has the second highest Quality of Competition in the league after Pavel Datsyuk, and just barely so. The year he scored 30 goals, it was more like 171th.

His change in production has everything to do with a change in role & responsibility.

Hahaha, his play has nothing to do with depression.

This guy is not a 30g scorer. He is a responsible minute-eater with a pretty decent shot, but he has very little in the way of offensive creativity. I wish people would accept that he's an important part of the team but is a 30-40pt guy who can slot in as a 2nd/3rd line tweener.

Big body who protects the puck and can help with possession, but other than his shot which he does not utilize as much as he should, he is not an offensive player. One outstanding year which is unlikely to be repeated, but that doesn't mean he isn't doing exactly what we need him to.

He is doing just fine so long as you don't expect him to recreate an unbelievably lucky year.

Kule's the type of player this team needs too keep around long term. His defense, size, checking, is all great for the way Carlyle likes too play.

Kulemin's problem is that he wants to be playing hockey with Malkin in Pittsburgh! Malkin is his best bud.

This is obvious as he looked really good playing with Malkin in the KHL!

I would bet that his play would escalate remarkably if he were to be reunited with Malkin.

JMHO.

He's just not a 30 goal scorer, but he will be awsome in the play-offs.

The "depressed" argument is all made up from someone on this forum. Everyone has their personal problems.

Looks fine to me this year, playing more of a defensive role.

If he had a better playmaking centre I'd imagine he could do more, but he works perfectly fine as a 30-40 point 3rd line two-way guy which are really important on a team.

we cant have ALL skilled guys, we need a mix of defensive role-players,skill, toughness and chemistry. That's how teams like Boston or NJ win without that pure #1 C or massive amounts of 70+ point guys.

Kessel is our pure skill guy, Kadri our other skill guy, Komarov plays the pest, Mcclement the defensive PK centre, Kule the defensive winger, Mclaren the enforcer etc.

The only major hole is Bozak, he's a faceoff man with limited offense, more suited for a third line role, that position badly needs an upgrade to complement Kessel(Stastny is good option). I'd also say we could use another top 4 D and maybe more of a Powerforward on Kadris line(but that's more optional than necessary.)

What?

How would you feel if your close hockey friends died in a plane crash? Probably not so hot.

I would have gotten over it by now. Everyone dies and we should all be very grateful that we even exist over the infinite number of people that will never be born. When a good person dies I think that the best thing to do is celebrate their life.

Kulemin shares my beliefs. You have no evidence to prove me wrong. Kulemin is a very happy man.

I really depends on the person. Theres people like my friend who lost his dad 1 and a half years ago, and he was 19 at the time. He dealt with it really strongly, took a short grieving period, and after that realized that life goes on.

On the contrary, theres people who go into depression because their girlfriends dump them.

I think it's time to separate him from Grabovski.

Agreed and there might be a few teams willing to take him and his 2.8 mil. $ stipend on. I know that watching Kule the last 2 years has depressed me and from what I can see he isn't even as good as McClement who seems happy to be making 1.5 mil. per.

Some have said that Grabo has not been helping Kule offensively but how can a player who never goes to the net be helped. 2 years ago Grabo, Kule and Mac went to the net and did whatever was needed to score and win, Kule stopped going anywhere that I would consider tough and poisoned the chemistry of that line.

It seems to me Kule is not playing well enough to stay with the Leafs except as a 4th liner who kills penalties, a far cry from a promising player who should have been entering his prime.

I think there is more to him than he has shown this year, his year with Kessel and Bozak was good, his second year with Macarthur feeding him he was terrific, his production is down goal wise but he has been good this year. i don't see why RW or RC have him joined to the hip with Grabo, maybe all he needs a change of scenery as Mac did when he moved to Kadri's line. When Lupul comes back, I would move Bozak to the 3rd line as C, with Grabo on the right wing and Kule on the left. This may give Kule a new look at another Center who can feed him the puck. There are not many passes coming his way this year.

That's what I'm trying to say. But people here are assuming that kulemin is still depressed over it when they have no idea how he thinks or feels

I wouldn't be surprised if such a traumatic experience haunts Kulemin for the rest of his life in some way or another. It's not a knee injury or even a concussion that necessarily heals with time. Or maybe it doesn't. Who knows?

As far as being a productive NHLer though, I'm pretty pessimistic about Kulemin. There just seems to be something wrong with him as a player.

I don't know if he is depressed or anything but one thing that struck is on the opening home game they want down the entire Leafs team (intro.) and every player put their stick up or hand waved to the camera except Kulemin. I know it sounds like a small thing but it seemed really strange and he seemed like an out cast.
lol. I heard he also puts his left skate on first and everyone else on the Leafs starts with their right

Hello everyone!

I attended todays game in person, and being a Kulemin fan, made special attention to follow him on the ice in the pre-game skate, during the game, general mannerisms.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is still depressed. I recall there was a thread on this topic in December of 2011 that someone confirmed having spent Christmas with him that he's mentally not there after the KHL plane crash.

I don't think his skills have left him, i think his mental well-being is not 100%. Not sure when and if he will come out of it. What are your thoughts? He's just back to earth after a one-off season, or is he still in there somewhere fighting a battle with depression?

I think the latter.

If he was still depressed he would have (or forced to have) taken a leave from the Team.

Hey, congrats on the PhD! When is the practice with Dr. Recchi opening up. Ever since the concussion I've needed a neuro like him to diagnose me and a therapist like you to tell me that my sadness=depression :(

As far as I'm concerned, it takes a lot of mental preparation just to show up to games, and he sure shows up.

I don't see any problems in him.

I guess i should have been more careful in the way i phrased some of my sentences. I certainly overestimated the level of anal-retentiveness some of the users have.

My thread was based on another user's December 2011 discussion that spoke about his friend spending Christmas with Kulemin, and Kulemin himself admitting that he is not emotionally/mentally there. I used that as my source to base a discussion on. Sure, i made a sweeping generalization to create a discussion based on my own opinion. I guess i didn't understand the level of education required to participate in these conversations or the standard of proof required to make statements.

I will return after completing my medical degree to participate in discussions such as these as well as those about injuries. Will also complete an MBA and LLB to discuss player transfer, collective bargaining, revenue sharing, contracts....etc.. It appears everyone here already has them.
