Drury needs to go into toy removal mode with Gallant now. Great run, great season but it's time to go back to building something that can lead to a sustainable level of success and not just replay the Lundqvist years over again by being awful and getting bailed out by Shesterkin most nights.

Get rid of guys like Strome and Vatrano, and honestly maybe even Copp so Gallant has no choice but to rely on players like Chytil, Lafreniere, Kravtsov and hopefully Kakko for real minutes and responsibilities.

Would love to see it, but I just don't see it happening. Through multiple coaching staffs, GMs, it's always the same - young D/G prospects get unlimited rope to learn and make mistakes. Young F prospects get zero rope and are replaced by the shiny new AHL tweaner on a hot streak at every turn.

It's tough to see the NYR org suddenly changing course when this is how they've operated for decades. At this point I am expecting them to re-sign Vatrano. The guy was stapled to Zibanejad all playoffs.

Re-signing Vatrano especially after extending Kravtsov would be a really bad sign IMO.

Does this necessarily mean he is in NYRs plans for next year, or could this just be a mutually agreed upon means of bolstering the asset?
Haven't really kept up with the situation but seems like theres a lot of belief around here that he'll be back.

No one really knows for sure but all the signs since the exile tend to point to him coming back. Most of the “he’s still getting traded” sentiment is loosely based on the fact that some people can’t believe they would actually kiss and make up after such a spat. Nothing has actually happened since then to make anyone think the divorce is final.

Yes.

Ok Gerard. You had your fun. You just needed to have your tough, gritty unskilled vets for your playoff run. We saw how that worked. Taken to the limit by the lower end playoff teams, not good enough to overcome the elite ones.

As I said many, many times, it’s the story of the 2012-2016 Rangers all over again, but some people have short memories and just needed to see it all over again: an undertalented 5v5 team carried by a historically hot goalie can win some rounds and maybe even go deep but doesn’t win it all. Almost never.

But ok. We had our “run” for the sake of Panarin and Kreider.

Now develop the f***ing kids, and their offensive talent and creativity; and get some young centers for our real future.

I think it's fair to say the overwhelming most likely outcome (80%+) is that he plays for the NYR this season, which is great given this contract and his potential.

But we have plenty of reason to believe they were actively shopping him and didn't get an acceptable return. So far we have seen both parties make generic statements, in Kravtsov's case likely straight from his agent. And him signing a new deal in the KHL would further diminish if not completely kill his trade value. Now teams calling also don't have to wonder about if he or his agent will be difficult to deal with in negotiating an NHL contract. It's one more hurdle cleared in a potential trade negotiation.

Just saying. Though again, given NYR cap constraints have to believe they would love to give him a shot on the team at this cap #...so hopefully that is the plan and he comes in and lights it up.

That's just going to make the team worse. We tried that this year with RW. We traded Buch. The plan was to leave spots open for the kids. Kakko, Kravtsov, Laf if he moved over there. It did not work whatsoever and we had to go and deal for Vatrano/Copp at the deadline because our RW was a major weakness.

I'm perfectly OK with this team being worse next year.

The organization won't be so it's not a realistic plan. That kind of roster needs to tread water until the deadline when they can trade for a bunch of reinforcements which won't be as easy because they won't have as much available cap space. Going into the season intending on having all three of Lafreniere/Kakko/Chytil in the top six, and then I suppose Kravtsov on the third line if he plays, seems like a terrible plan to me. That's hoping to get lucky and having things work out rather than trying to build a good team.

Then the organization is doomed to make the same mistakes it's been making forever.

I'm tired of constantly having to fight our own coach.

It just got a team to within 2 games of the SCF with tons of leftover and dead cap space. Chytil has never exceeded 22 points (One year in 42 games with stats that were flukey). Kakko has never exceeded 23 points. Lafreniere has never exceeded 31 points. Having these guys all in the top six with no backup plan is asking for failure.

Kakko was hurt and Kravtsov was shortsightedly chased off.

If they properly handle these guys and they stay healthy, it’s way better than shoehorning in more guys like Blais and Hunt.

You have to stop putting these kids in bottom 6 roles or they will never take off. It will become a self fulfilling prophecy; you can’t trust them because you won’t trust them.

This is revisionist history. The team was locked into the playoffs before the deadline and Kreider-Zib-Laf was a top 5 line in the NHL.

They needed to make trades because the Panarin line was shit at even strength and they had like ten NHL forwards, not because nobody stepped into Buchnevich's spot.

The trades failed to fix the Panarin line and gave Gallant a toy to play over Lafreniere for no reason, with KZV being objectively worse than KZL.

Those moves get way too much credit for us winning two rounds. The best thing they did was give us a whole lineup of NHL forwards which Gallant spent most of the playoffs voluntarily noping on.

Laf was back on LW like a game and a half into the season. Him being on the top line was never tried in earnest and it's super weird because it was great the few times he ended up there.

Moving the kids into the top six does not make the team worse. You can't do any worse than the absolute unwatchable top six we just iced 5v5 for 20 playoff games.

Would hate to repeat the mistakes of handing Adam Fox 24 minutes in his first full season, or penciling a rookie K'Andre Miller into the top 4 forever, or buying out Lundqvist so some kid could just be our starter for the next decade. Horrible failures, those.

We do it all the time. We just don't do it with forwards because this organization is a suburban mom.

Body language analyzer -now do #20
I have no clue what you're getting at. Kreider is actually way more consistent than people on this board give him credit for. Most just complain bc he isn't producing as frequently but funny enough the majority of his production comes from OTHER people getting the puck to the net so he can tip and rebound. Is it a coincidence that as the team stops getting the puck to the net as much his production dries up? He kept forechecking and playing and I'd you watching the post game presser the guy was gutted that they lost. If you're looking to rip guys he isn't the guy to go after right now.

Motte - Goodrow - Blais

Lafreniere - Chytil - Kakko

Othmann - Paul - Kreider

Panarin - Zibanajad - Marchment

I was actually going to bump the Lafreniere thread to post this but it seems relevant to the current conversation here.

Just for fun I looked at ice times for the last game. I had a good chuckle at the fact that Lafreniere finally played 17:27 which is by far the most he's played in this series and likely the entire playoffs. Prior to last game he never played more than 13 minutes this series.

We needed to be in an elimination game against the two time defending Stanley Cup champions before Gallant said, "Hey, who's that number 13 kid sitting over there? What's his name? Lafreniere? He looks pretty good, let's get him out there more."

As for Kravtsov, I was taken aback that this is one-way deal.

I don't think Drury offers that if he's not fixing for Kravtsov to have a spot. I don't think Kravtsov accepts any deal where he thinks he's going to be traded.

It appears they worked out their differences.

Kravtsov is OK about being traded I think.

Not only that, but he is the one that generated the power play which lead to the tying goal. Dancing around 3 different players and Stamkos just grabbing him.

He's making the jump next season. Kid has never not been good. He got tired of being a scrub at the NHL level. I'd bet he takes 1 week off and is right back to training this summer. He got the taste of success, and that often is what these young guys need.
