He was still a dominant player at the current ECHL level in a context where there were only 21 NHL teams - so a guy whose level of play was very close to the NHL.

And he's a guy known for having a dominant temperament.

And that was 35 years ago when the demands on player background were lower.

ECHL is nowhere close to the NHL, even when there was only 21 teams.

I just hope she can be more than a one hit wonder, like John.

Um still... you add 11 NHL teams in 86, so 11 AHL teams, that makes room for Tortorella as a very good AHL player. And in the meantime, he had been HC of an ECHL team.

I didn't think much of Bylsma during his last tenure, but he and Campbell have been cookin' in CV. League runner-up the first two years of their existence is a major accomplishment, and they're being recognized for it.

Have to think this will help Wright, Evans and Winterton's transition to the big league as well.

All the women recently hired in the NHL are young and pretty.

Another question: how many assistant coaches are 32 years old without having been at the high level as a player?

I don't know about all the teams but in Montreal it's Alex Burrows, 43 years old, 13 years in the NHL.

On media paper it looks good but on the concrete ground, it will pose credibility problems. Training players who have more experience than you is going to be complicated.
Paul Maurice was 28-years-old when he was hired to be head coach of the Hartford Whalers. I guess that was due to his stunning good looks and impressive OHL playing career.

Very good move. She has an impressive track record as a player and as an assistant coach already.

Not a DEI hire, although the old boys club might beg to differ.

This. Exactly this. Paul Maurice has a similar trajectory (albeit with a small HC stint in minors before making the NHL jump).

Rich Clune also just picked up an NHL AC job in Anaheim last week. He's 37, has been retired as a player for 2 years, and he has less than half a year as an AHL AC. Where's the discussion for that?

But don't let that get in the way of a good argument against women who have been successful as a player and also in their coaching career. A bunch of bad faith arguers.

Hmm. I dunno. He might appeal to some folks but doesn't really do it for me.

That said, I'm also kind of "enh" on Campbell. So who knows.

Jon Cooper and Ken Hitchkock didn't even play in any junior leagues.

And there are quite a few NHL coaches who never played at the NHL level.

Drafted by an NHL franchise, ended his career at age 20 due to injury. He had 8 years of coaching experience, was GM/HC with excellent results before being hired. Extremely rare profile.

Most are very old examples. Scotty Bowman, there were only 6 teams and he played in a very famous regional league. Had a big CV before becoming HC.

Ken Hitchcock over 16 years of experience as HC before being in the NHL. Etc., etc

You will have difficulty finding an NHL assistant coach who is 32 years old, has never approached the pro level as player, has never coached and has been an assistant coach on the senior circuit for 2 years.

I’m not sure why there is any response to this thread other than “congrats, Jessica! You’ve certainly earned this opportunity and good luck!”…

Nobody is putting her on a pedestal. She will have to keep achieving to keep progressing. That does not mean the way things have been done the past 50 years are the way things should be done moving forward. This is just like any other profession…if you fail to open your eyes to talent because of what your company has regarded as “procedure” since the mid-20th century or longer, you are going to bleed talent and fail. Welcome to the 21st century, it started over two decades ago.

Good for her. I legit want the Sens to hire Cheryl Pounder. Maybe not as a coach behind the bench, but just get her in the organization and utilize her big hockey brain. Shes incredibly knowledgeable.
