Kraken 2025-26 Offseason (different but the same??)

This is absurd.. what’s your plan? Sell everyone and tank for picks? Unless you think the Kraken will get Edmonton luck on the lottery, that’s a fools errand.

The cynicism from the internet fanbase is reaching absurd levels at this point. Criticism is one thing, but bitching about every move and constant gloom and doom is pathetic. I’m sure the sparkles in Vegas will take on more bandwagoners.

Can’t believe people bitching about the Marchment trade.

Keep drafting well. Develop the kids. Make smart FA signings or trades. Manage the cap… it’s not impossible to turn things around in the NHL. Tanking is for losers.

What is absurd is that you completely failed to get the drift of my posts. OBVIOUSLY I didn't advocate for selling the kids, quite the opposite in fact. Sigh. See my post above the one you quoted. This is why I usually try to stay away from hfboards - too many dunderheads.

The Kraken(as well as the Leafs) are supposedly "pursuing" Andrew Mangiapane in free agency.

My question would be.
Why?

Dude's a career 0.5 ppg guy and the definition of a middle six forward.

Mangiapane grew up just outside of Toronto. I can't recall where I read it because it has been awhile, but I vaguely remember him saying he was a huge Leaf fan growing up. Doubt we would be his first choice.

He also knows Leafs GM Treiliving from their time in Calgary.
Seems like a great fit with him and Toronto and I wouldn't mind that.

I wouldn't trust David Pagnotta when it comes to what he says.

Not sure about the credibility of the rumor and agree about where he would fit. I thought he could be had for cheap but looking at his last contract 5.8M x 3, I would stay away from him. Seems like Tolvy to me.

On a side note I have wondered where Tolvy stands with this team going into his last season before hitting UFA. He is a solid piece on our 3rd line but is off a career season hitting 23G. He may out price himself next off-season so maybe the team is looking for a cheaper, signed option for the next 2-3 years? I thought Mangiapane could be who they are targeting for that, and move out Tolvy for some good assets till I saw how much he makes.

Well, Tolvanen is an interesti9ng one.
He'll be in the final year of his contract this season and if he keeps on scoring at this rate he'll command a really nice contract.

Doing a Friedman impression.
I was wondering about Seattle and Tolvanen. They might want Peterka and Buffalo wants an NHL player in return. Maybe there's a deal to be had revolving around Tolvanen for Peterka? :sarcasm:

Seems like we're going after guys who play with a lot of heart and soul and don't give up on plays and aren't afraid to lay there body on the line. Marchment is just a better version of Mangiapane but both of them are way more...likeable? then guys like Schwartz and Eberle in the sense that they're well liked by coaches and fans generally for the type of game they play. I'm also imagining that looking forward these types of guys are going to be our replacements for our pending UFA's.

I think the guys we've got so far are upgrades, though I'm still not super happy about the direction. But at least we haven't spent real assets and don't appear to have any plans to do so.

I can certainly see that. My concern with Tolvy is nothing to do with his role on the team but more to do with the concern that his next contract will overprice him for that role.

I do think you are right. They are going for players that are "tougher" to play against.

I don't think Velano gets re-signed. Maybe Marchment. But I think the latter only happens if we make the playoffs this season because someone is going to pay for Marchment given his size, etc. I don't see us re-signing Schwartz but maybe Eberle, with a much lower cap and potentially for another 1-2 years. I would like to move away from him, but he seems likeable and still can produce.

I am unsure what you mean by the direction because, I don't think we know that yet.

Marchment over Bura should be an upgrade. I don't consider him the upgrade the top-6 needs but more of a tough to play against tweener.

Velano over the blender of 4C's last season should also be an improvement. Being on a 1 year contract and getting Bura's 2nd year of the books is also great.

Botterill has done nothing with the top-6 yet, so hard to judge him on that yet. The roster, as it stands, will still miss the playoffs and I am genuinely ok with that. I think we won't know more till Botterill actually makes a move (or doesn't) to upgrade that top-6.

I think that Marchment should get re-signed and I would be fine giving him a Beniers esque deal. I don't want to see Schwartz or Eberle back. They're fine players, they're just not going to help us long term. They aren't playoff performers much.

By direction I mean that we've continued to just sign some decent middle six options. We haven't gone in and signed a Marner or an Ehlers and we also haven't gone the other direction and shipped off guys for futures. We've made a few smart deals for low cost medium reward but we haven't gambled on anything. We haven't tried to hit for the fences.

So I've progressed to Stage 2 of the "Grubauer not getting bought out" coping scale, which is "well maybe Botterill isnt announcing it on Day 1 to not look like they were dunking on a popular player?"

Right. But FA doesn't start till July 1st so won't really know what the plan it is. Also, there really have been no big trades yet so I am guessing teams want to wait around till it gets closer to the draft and we may see more action around then.

I read some rumors about Gru being looked to be bought out but nothing concrete. I think it is fair to expect Botterill to do some due diligence and see if we can swing a deal to get an expensive pluggable forward or D-man on a 1 year expiring deal for Gru, like he did for Bura.

The fact that Botterill has made moves to improve the roster already gives me hope that he is a plan going in. But I think we need to wait atleast till after July 1st to find out more.

Most of the buyouts tend to happen the last couple days of the buy out window. if gru is bought out we probably won't know until the 29th or the 30th of june.

Man I can't believe that's all it took to get Zegras and we didn't offer anything for him.

You broke the news to me. I was like "It can't be that bad of a return". Woah. That's a really low return. I'm a guy who probably underrates Zegras and believes he's vastly overrated, but for that return, I'd probably have taken the gamble. Anaheim just got a lot tougher though. lol... They would have if it was only draft picks going back.

What a lame deal. Not Tocchet's kind of player, I would have thought.
Yeah, that too...Tocchet, famously horrible with players exactly like Zegras during his previous stints in Vancouver and Arizona...

What can go wrong?

Not much has gone right for Philly since about 2010. I like that Briere was willing to go for it here though, and for less than I thought it would take.

Would Shea Van Olm be someone worth taking a shot at this offseason? I don't know if he would be a free agent signing or more of a draft eligible guy. He's 21, so I'm not sure. I expect he would be a UDFA maybe?

But with his insane chemistry with Catton, it might be worth taking a shot. He's not super skilled, but he's hardworking, has a good net front presence, is not afraid to mix it up, and definitely scores a lot of goals in front of the net. He also has a pretty decent shot.

Nondescript junior career until his overage season; playing with two of the better players in major junior. It will be interesting to see what he does at Penn State.

I think he is the type of player that could end up being a decent tweener. He goes to the dirty areas, will park himself in front of the net. He is decent defensively as well. His skating is what I am not too sure about.
