Value of: Kotkaniemi

I agree KK doesn't have great value. On the flip side, a goalie with 1 year left before UFA coming off an injury filled season probably doesn't warrant a 1st, with or without KK. Just my $0.02.

For me it just comes down to needing some incentive to take KK as well as to move off from Demko. But that’s just my take, Canucks’ management might view KK as a positive asset.

Understand. From a Canes fan POV, the annual cost to buy him out is very cheap, so it doesn't make sense to "pay" someone a 1st to take him. Granted, it's not my money so the FO may think differently.

He is not "good for 35-40 points"

In fact, he's only eclipsed 35 points once in his career.

Over 4 seasons and 305 games in Carolina he’s got 102 points - or 35.4 points per 82. His career high is more than 40 points but I didn’t even say 35-45. If he’s healthy for close to 82 games, he should get you around 35-40 points.

Talk about trying to dissect something ridiculously minute…how about this - “he’s good for 30-45 points”. Better?

I agree it’s not worth that. I think there’s a chance he could even have positive value for the right team with the salary cap significantly going up.

Negative value posters are on another planet, makes zero sense in today's NHL climate.
Two years ago sure, this summer he returns something positive, possibly marginally, but positive.

I could be way off, but I think the Canes would give up something else in a deal like you suggested so I don't disagree on principle, I just don't think it's a 1st. Given that they have 2 of Dallas's 1sts in the future, I could be wrong though.

Can Carolina even afford (not in the financial sense) to give Kotkaniemi a change of scenery? The UFA center market is underwhelming, more so after Gourde came off the board. Say Tavares and Giroux re-sign, and it’s Nelson/Bennett/Granlund and then a healthy drop off to Bjugstad/Dvorak level. At least you can talk yourself into upside with Kotkaniemi, whatever the percentage is at this point.

Why not aim for Ehlers as well?

Sign Marner, Ehlers, Gavrikov or someone of the same caliber and trade for Larkin. The KK buyout will open up 3M+
Canes can’t spend to the cap this year on long term contracts. If they do it will be for an Orlov type deal. Two years at a bigger than market number.

That’s because they have Blake, Stankoven, Morrow & Nikishin that they need to account for as all three come off ELC’s within 2 years.

There will be clubs, like Van, who will pay to acquire JK. Is 15OA out of line?
Are you making a joke? You must be lol
First off if we aquire a 2c which seems to be the plan, Chytil is a far better option at 3c, I would play Raty over KK now and definitely in the future and then there's Blueger, Karlson, Aman and Sasson. Not all are as polished as KK, He's not a bad 3c but Chytil and Raty offer far more offensive upside and Linus is on the cusp, he dominates in Abby and the other guys are fourth line options and none cost the 15th overall.

I mean he's a likely buyout candidate, why would you give up a lottery pick?
