Value of: Kotkaniemi

Now do playoffs
He's definitely struggled to produce in the last few postseasons, that doesn't make him a bad player. His career postseason pace is 26 points vs 33 in the regular season, which is a fairly typical dropoff. And he's spent a lot of his career going deep into the playoffs where things get increasingly tighter. He's never been eliminated in the first round across two different franchises.

It's kind of crazy that going after KK blocked them from keeping Trocheck who would have been perfect for this core's window.
I don’t think it blocked them at all. I think they thought KK would take Tro’s place. Getting KK was them trying to proactively avoid signing bigger ufa contracts like Tro’s that they’ve very much avoided under TD. In the very recent past they’ve started opening uo to giving those contracts to guys like Guentzel and Rants, but it’s ironic that the biggest hole in the forward lineup remains the one this series of events created. Tro wasn’t perfect but he was a good fit for the team, and they’ve coveted a righty center since.

What’s really ironic is that at least at a superficial level Tro and Lindholm are two of the best righty 2C’s out there and this management group had both of them at one time.

Just for a pick, how high you think it would be?

Caps dont like Finns and i dont think our board would like KK much, but he does fill in some boxes for what direction Caps have been moving for. Good size, 3C spot is open for taking and youngish with some untapped upside.

Kind of a younger Lars Eller fill in.

Not sure i like it for Caps either, just interested what it would cost :)

Are people seriously still shitting on this contract?

He plays 3rd line minutes
He produces like a 3rd liner
He's paid like a 3rd liner

For 5 million you can get Garland, 10 times the player Cutlet Niemi is

Really the canes are in no rush here. If a great opportunity comes up, they move him out cheaply. If no great opportunity comes. He remains an overpaid Hurricane.
Carolina has 1 more year to still buy him out at 1/3 of the cost. He turns 26 in July 2026. So, a decision would be made by June. It would be like $800K of dead cap for like 8 years when the cap would be $100 mill.

All KK has done is tease you a bit here and there. No consistency.

Then they have a other full year before they have to make a decision. Still not a pressing issue. Although if someone offers to take him for free they should do it now.

No Vancouver isn't that dumb. We don't have Benning anymore, the bald guy is still smarter
Of course. But JK is a younger centre on a decent cap allocation. Van seems in the market for a centre of his age group. Lots of clubs want centres in this age group. The supply is limited though. So the cost goes up. Is JK at 5 per a worse choice than Rossi at 7 x 7? It’s going to be interesting to see the cost to acquire JK. It’s a very weak draft after the top few guys too. Those later firsts don’t have the same value as they will in 2026.

Drama with Carolina aside, a player like him has more value as a trade chip than if CAR bought him out. Having someone on your payroll for 8 years that doesn't play for you sucks. It will eventually matter, especially if the owner likes to spend to the cap. We've seen in the past that sometimes a deal gets called off for .5M. So why burden yourself with this if you can help it?

If Carolina is dead set on trading him, they can. And they will. I don't expect that he'd return a 1st round pick from a bottom feeder, but he could probably return 1st from the 20-32 side. There are at least 10 teams in the league that can use another natural center on their team. Personally, I don't see them trading him but weirder things have happened...

Honestly I rather they get nothing if the only option left is JK. Building a team requires more thinking than plugging any available center
