Turned out to be a milquetoast player but frankly that contract at this point isn’t that horrendous.

You can do a lot worse on your third line than a 24 year-old (pretty crazy that he’s still only that age) center who is good for 35-40 points and pretty good on the dot.

He’s overpaid for what he is. He will look a lot less overpaid after this summer. And not so much that Carolina is going to give up anything for his easily dumpable contract.

He’s not a negative value contract because Carolina can cut ties with him tomorrow with minimal effect. They aren’t adding anything of real value for your team to take him.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Carolina would likely get value for him at 4 mil/year for the next 4. 0.4 pts/gm, good on face-offs, and somehow only 24 years old (feels like he should be 30 already).

Not to mention Carolina only have to pay that for 4 years rather than 8.

Would the Canes retain up to, say, $841k to get positive value out of him? Seems like it could open up the market. He's more palatable at "a bit over 4" versus "a hair under 5".

He can be a useful player and will continue to have a solid career, but you've gotta think the Canes have been a pretty consistently underwhelmed by him.
