If the CBJ think Tarasov is still a year away, only offering a free agent goalie a 1 year contract does not help Columbus outbid other teams. But Korpi doesn’t have to move to another city and deal with all those hassles. So it makes sense to keep a well-liked player who has been a good soldier.

In the last two years, Korpisalo is the only goalie with a save percentage below .890 (n=66).

That said, here are some of the UFAs hitting the market this July:
-Darcy Keumper (AAV will be too high)
-Eric Comrie
-Ville Husso (will he stay in St. Louis? either way, he's due for a raise)
-Jack Campbell (due for a raise)
-Case DeSmith
-Braden Holtby
-Scott Wedgewood
-Marc-Andre Fleury
-Jaroslav Halak
-Mikko Koskinen
-Martin Jones
-Dustin Tokarski

If Jarmo's goal was to spend <$1.5m annually on a backup, I don't really know who was a better option. I suppose you could make the argument JF Berube & Tarasov would be better as a 2/3 split and the team should focus on Jet Greaves or someone else as a 4th goalie, but...
