Proposal: Knies for Tippett

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

There's no motivation for the Leafs to trade Knies other than if it's a lopsided value trade in a position of high value (early to mid 20s top six C or top pairing D)

I’m surprised for how little people think of Tippett. He’s much more skilled imo.
He's a one trick pony. Which means when the one trick doesn't work, there's nothing else. That's why he's currently on a line with Rodrigo Abols and Nic Deslauriers.

What’s the one trick? In my eyes he’s similar to Timo Meier.

I think the Leafs could get a better package for Knies if they shopped him around than just Tippet. Probably best to keep him though since good power forwards are so hard to find.

Toronto denies this pretty easily. Knies is definitely propped up by Matthews and Marner but he’s a very unique and useful player who is getting better and better. Kid is a gamer.
I think propped up is not the correct term for him. He benefits but his style effort and stick allows him to mesh with anyone

Knies isn’t an untouchable piece. For example I would’ve done rantanen for knies ++ as I like rantanen on our team a lot

I’m not doing knies for Tippett though. Knies should only be dealt in some package to get a high end center or a high end dman

On the one hand, there is a galaxy brained take to sell high on Knies. His shooting percentage is really high and he obviously benefits from playing on a line with two superstars. To be clear, a trade for Tippett is not selling high, it would be for a better asset.

On the other hand, the number of power forwards with skill in the current league is so low, they're like unicorns. And he's still very young. And the Leafs core players are not really physical at all so he's a perfect complement. It's hard to imagine Toronto moving him.

Try to burn it down the ice and beat the defenseman to the net. It’s a very good trick to have, but you’re committing 8 years to an otherwise low-IQ player.

I think this is a little bit harsh on Tippett. He's not only that. There are other tools and capabilities there. But i'd agree that it's certainly his primary function. And that's a significant difference in this discussion compared to Knies.

That's not to say that guys like Tippett who have the tools and wherewithal to largely "generate their own goals" aren't a unique skillset with intrinsic value in it's own right. I typically value that sort of skillset a lot more highly than most. It's just that...guys like Knies who can play that more true "power forward" game with pace, hands, and the instincts and vision to be more of a "complementary presence" to more skilled players, is a more versatile skillset.

ie. Tippett may have the edge in "on and island" ability. But if you're building a contender...i think you defer to the "plays better with other top players" skillset. And that's Knies.

Pretty silly this is still open. Knies is bigger, stronger and younger.

Tippet is a decent player for sure, but this doesn't make any sense. We are closer to seeing Tippet's peak than Knies' and I would argue Knies is already better.
