One of the things to ponder on the current Oilers is how basically every D here are doing even better than expected under KK/Coffey. If you think about it every D we have has improved since the whacked Woodcrap segment.

For instance Darnell Nurse looked like a stud playing under Tippett and does again now. Ekholm is better here than even in Nashville. Booch bloom happened under KK/Coffey. Kulak looking best ever. Emberson coming in here and looking like a find.

Good schemes and coaching is more relatable to D and defending than any other facet of hockey.

The last time the Oilers had coaching staff that were good D whisperers it was Ronnie Low era. We had not great D back then but they looked better here than anywhere else. So thats the clear trend line that KK and Coffey establish here. EVERY D look better here and D with an offensive side just get more confident doing that here.

This is a factor I guess to consider in the Klingberg hiring as well is that we have D whisperers here and Coffey could be best in business.
I love Coffey so much. He brings so much. If only we had a goaltender coach as solid as him.

If he comes out and looks even passable, awesome.

This just feels like a massive gamble in a year that realistically needs to be absolutely all in. This organization has failed McDavid for long enough.

There’s still room to add at the TDL.

He’s a good, playoff experienced depth to add on the back end.

I don’t think people realized how much hockey the team’s played thus far. Having extra bodies will be beneficial for another deep playoff run. He doesn’t have to be anything special, he just needs to be reliable and dependable, and move the puck up ice. Anything more is just gravy. Just pretend he’s the right shot Broberg!

Canucks are dying for a puck mover from the blue line. I’m wondering if they’re desperate enough to pick up TDA now that we signed Klingberg lol

Not gonna lie I'm pretty excited to watch two of the best puck moving D in the league playing on different pairings. You can not like Klingberg's defensive game, but there's no denying he is one of the best passers in the league when it comes to Dmen. If you can shelter that in the proper role it could be a major weapon for this team.

The -28 on the Ducks is understandable, its the seasons prior in Dallas that worry me. I'll even look past the -7 in his short stint in Toronto as he was probably at the end of the rope in terms of how his hip was doing. I don't even remember the Stars being that bad overall defensively those years, a lot of core players are in the minus side. And yes +/- is a skewed stat at times, so I tend to use it to compare in relation to a players team mates. He doesn't stick out like a sore thumb near the end of his time in Dallas, but won the green jacket for the teams worst +/- his last three seasons in Dallas.

Hopefully whether its Nurse or Kulak they can help his pairing keep their heads above water.

I'm fine with the contract being slightly above the level that is completely buriable. It sounds like if it still can effect the cap from the minors, it won't be much. So even if he sucks, we can't Toby Rieder him and say that his extra 120k or whatever was the reason if we don't end up with the cup this year. Or at least reasonable people wouldn't think like that.

If the possible alternative was him signing with playoff rival and seeing him be a top 4D for pennies, we'd all be pissed Bowman didn't spend an extra 100k or whatever if that scanario playec out. If there was a bit of a bidding war and this is what it took, I'm fine with that gamble for what JK could potentially add for us.

There is also the possibility the Twitter heads are wrong, or that the team has a plan they will enact in the coming days to fix their cap. Maybe J Skinner gets moved, or they have identified their potential adds at the tdl and know they can fit them all. I'm excited to see how this works out.

So essentially they’re trading ~ 1M out of a possible 7-8ish at the deadline for a lotto ticket right now. 6m deadline space is still tons to work with, and that’s without any salary going out.

So his cap hit is high because its pro-rated correct? Even though his annual cap hit is 1.738M, it would only be 1M against our cap today?

From puckpedia:

Note that its a signing bonus, so im assuming that comes across this years cap and given to him right away. That way if it doesn't work out he has a little money.

To be fair every acquisition is a gamble. Especially mid-season or at the deadline as a lot of players never end up gelling with their new team. Edmonton's actually been quite fortunate in this regard over the last few years. Hopefully, that's a sign of a strong leadership group and coaching staff at transitioning new guys in (understanding that many of the bench coaches that were here with Woody are still here with KK).

Has anyone said anything in regards to if he can or will go on a conditioning stint in the AHL?

Perry worked out. I hope this one does too. Would solve a massive problem

Maybe not a massive problem, but the Oil love to run their offence going low to high followed by a point shot.

IF healthy, Klingberg gives you someone that can walk the line and control the play from the offensive blueline better than anyone on the current roster (yes, that includes Bouchard).

He can, but I'd imagine they might just get him practicing with the team and work him in over the upcoming home stand. If he's close to being ready to play it might be worthwhile working him in against a lesser opponent like Buffalo or Seattle.
