Kitchener Rangers 2024-25 Season Thread, Part V

I have a question about the game last night. London iced the puck and called time out late in the 3rd period. I thought you couldn't call time out after icing.

Am I wrong?

Reid is late 1st, early 2nd at worst this year. Romano probably 2nd round early 3rd. Lam perhaps in about the 7th. Stark's stock dropped due to injury, but he's a mid round talent with some size. There's 4 likely NHL draft level talents with 2 on the higher end in our 07s. If Valentini shows he's a projected 1st round talent (who's to say a year from now). Xu and Bilecki have shown well in minutes they've got this playoffs with a bit of a banged up blueline.

Add to this Headrick (hope he grows like bro) our 08 1st rounder, 07s Ellis, Arquette, MacNeil who have all shown they can play and contribute at this level. Our other early 08 picks who played down but had good seasons in Westin and Anstis and that's 13 players without an import named.

Not mentioned are flyer picks like Bray and hextall, or guys who have seen action like Labrash or Schneider (who I see as victim of the numbers game and asking to be dealt)

Goalie is a big ?. I think Schaubel is capable, this mentioned import signing is a 2nd or 3rd rnd talent this NHL draft. Goaltending is such a crapshoot, who knows in 2 years.

Looking ahead to next years team a few areas I think we need to address is the goaltending, more secondary scoring and getting a new pp system. The OA situation could be interesting depending on rumoured rule changes etc. I think it’s 50/50 if Ando plays in the AHL the whole year next year. Pridham I think depends entirely on the Blackhawks and where they see the best fit for his development. Here he would be playing in every situation on the top line with tonnes of minutes. I’m not sure how much ice time he’d get at BU next year as I don’t know anything about their returning players etc. I think getting a high impact import or two (again depending on the rumoured rule changes) I would be beneficial.

We are losing Swick and Pridham (high chance gone) next year…..both big boys. I think one of our biggest issues will be size / grit upfront. We have Ellinas who is a legit 1st liner next year. We have Hlacar who I’d love to see return and be a fixtured on the 4th line. Can Weston Cameron lock up a 3rd line spot?

These would all be regulars in our line up next year below. That’s 50% of forwards under 6ft tall…not a number I’m excited about. I’d like to see us add a legit power forward.

Humpfreys 5’11
Romano 5’11
Ellis 5’10
Lam 5’10
Arquette 5’8
Headrick 5’7

Rumour and discussion on the “OA candidates for 25-26” thread that Pridham may have decommitted with the intent of an OA season in Kitchener.

I would like to see the Rangers start drafting more size when available. Some skilled players under 6 feet are a given they have to take the opportunity to draft yet the average size of NHL players is 6'2". Maybe a couple of the young players will grow an inch or two.
Be great to see more players that size on the squad. 🙂

It's a tough balancing act size vs small and skilled. If we're going to draft smaller players they need to have high ceilings. We can't be using them to simply fill out the bottom 6. Or they need to have a bulldog mentality. It's all about projecting what type of role they're going to play and then developing them for that role.

I am a Knights fan, you know that, superdee. Can you find in the OHL Rule Book the clause that says a player must take the hit from a big 6'5"- 215 lbs players coming at him with some speed? If you find such a rule, I will put a like onto your

I get the fact that he did the right thing. Woolley did not stick his knee out to make it knee on knee. He would have creamed him if he hadn’t ducked out of the way. It was same kind of deal when Max McCue and Misa collided when Misa was a rookie and injured his knee. There was no intent on making the play knee on knee. I don’t like kids getting hurt. People on this board went on about the late hit on Barkey just being a follow through and that’s ok but 6’5 215 pound Woolley has to stop on a dime. I still say they screwed up giving him a major it was total bullshit. Any attempt to intentionally injure somebody like the blind side elbow by Hilicar to Halttunen head should have been a match. The OHL refs rarely get it right. The hit to Humphreys was not a head shot either as his head is behind Kasper’s back as he makes contact with his chest and shoulder. My wife watched the video and agreed with me and she never does that!

Getting any imports to show up would be a win!

I watched it about 5x last night. Romano does not alter course (he had less than 2' between him and the boards the whole time and nowhere to go) and Woolley makes no attempt to make a legal check or avoid the hit. If you clip a guy in the knee and that's the only point of contact, then it's kneeing. The impact and speed at which it happened made it worthy of 5 and a game.

Imports

As far as I know, at one point this season, we held the rights to:

04-Mesar (because he was an OA)
05-Chromiak
05-Sale
06-Pobezal
07-Chrenko
07-Kerkola

With Mesar aging out, we’ll likely hold the rights to the 05’s as OA’s as long as possible. The NHL drafting of Pobezal and Kerkola this June (both expected to be drafted), should allow us to make two selections in the import draft. Unsure if we’d have to drop one of the 05’s to allow that to happen to get down to six protected.

The CHL seems to be so unnecessarily secretive regarding import rules so take all this with a grain of salt.

to be fair i dont know if many common fans care about the intricacies of the import rules.

chromiak and sale would go on the overage list and not count.

Pobezal, Chrenko, Kerkola are all still on frozen lists, so in theory if they stay there Kitchener could draft 3 more. it depends if they changed the frozen rules.

Being you seem to have more inside info than most, do you know if its confirmed that Kitchener put in a claim for Kerkola?
