Kitchener Rangers 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

Krys Barch coached Huron Perth Lakers and Kane played on that team.

Brother, Hayden, is a rookie D with Saginaw.

Kane is listed on the US National Under 17 team (NTDP) which would mean a 2-year commitment to the program or a fine would result ($50k)? Is this correct?

I don't think we need to get too concerned about release fees. While $50 k is a lot of money for some franchises, to others it's chump change.
I did notice a very lengthy delay from Windsors pick to the Rangers pick. Probably at the maximum time allowed, I wonder if MM was on the phone with the Barch's asking about his actual commitment to the USNDTP and would he come this yr?? 🤔

Agreed, Ward. Wondered the same. It seemed to take forever to make the pick.

I agree that it did take a lot of time for the pick. MM was almost certainly on the phone with Barch. I'm still unsure about them wanting a commitment for Barch coming next season. I think it would suit the Rangers fine if it wasn't for a year, possibly 2.

It’s chump change for the Rangers. Pay the freight and get him here now. Much rather see him here this September than next September.
The USDP is a great development program where Barch will get lots of ice time. We already have a crowded roster, moreso if Valentini reports as expected. And 16 year olds generally don't contribute a great deal if you're hoping to go on a championship run. I'd rather have a physically mature 18-20 year old in the lineup

I suspect a good indication will be if he shows up for Rookie Camp. At least it will give the Barchs and Rangers sometime to discuss. Wonder if Hage had interest but MM wasn't overly aggressive to sign him at Rookie Camp, I've noticed since then that MM been signing their draft picks a lot earlier.

I don't really think that tells us anything if Barch shows. But not showing would speak volumes and be cause for concern imo.

I have a question. It used to be prior to the new NCAA agreement that most USDP players were likely going the college route so obviously they wouldn't sign an OHL contract. With the new NCAA agreement in place could a player sign an OHL contract and still do his USDP commitment?

Just to challenge this idea. Barch’s best comparable for me is a kid like Brady Martin in the Soo. Would you not want this years draft year Martin in the lineup for a mem cup run over an older vet like Mercer in 26-27?

If he's that good then yes. But I can probably count the number of 16 year olds on one hand that were major contributors to very good teams.

Like I said we already have a packed roster and I'd rather have an older player with physical presence.

It wouldn’t mean much. Hage showed.

Nuff said.

Evan McGrath
Ryan Murphy
Francesco Pinelli
Carson Rehkopf
Cameron Reid

Some of these guys didn’t make major contributions, but the ones that didn’t make major contributions, did see second unit of power play, and regular minutes.
