First off not questioning the return you got as I think the trade was a very solid one for the Rangers, nor am I suggesting the trade shouldn't have been made. But do you think if MM knew at the time he had such a strong team this season (Incredible Goaltending, Exceptional Coaching, Talented Roster) would he make the Carson Rephkof (SP? sorry Carson) trade with the Steelheads before the season got going? Should he perhaps have gone the more traditional route and traded him closer to the deadline where he could have evaluated the team's level of performance? Hindsight of course would have been very valuable in this case!
Just curious what you all think. Cheers see ya tomorrow.
Fortunately for the Rangers, MM didn't know the team would be as strong as it is. Many of us on the Boards had the team in the bottom of the pile in a rebuild year. But even before Pridham, Humphries, and Ellis, Jussi and his coaching team had the boys locked into the culture and system.
I personally didn't miss Rehkopf and the trade brought in much needed picks for the cupboard. By Christmas, we all wondered if there would be more trades (ie Ando etc) but MM didn't go in that direction. I have to wonder if he would have kept Rehkopf too instead of trading him. That would have been disastrous for the cupboard!
We went into this year the same way we went into last year. Expecting to be rebuilding. But, it got to the point last year where MM felt he couldn’t sell. So we wound up further depleting the draft cupboard with the Sale trade.
I believe this year, again going into a rebuild season, MM had an offer he couldn’t refuse for Rehkopf. I figure he assumed that he would not get that return or more at the deadline, so in a rebuild season, he felt it was the time to strike.
Also, it can’t be ignored that us making the Rehkopf trade may have had something to do with us having the inside track on Valentini. We don’t make the Rehkopf trade, maybe Valentini goes to another team. It doesn’t seem like a big deal right now, but if he reports, we will have acquired one of the top picks in the 2024 draft on the very cheap.
I also believe, that it’s highly likely that if he did not make the Rehkopf deal, we’d find ourselves at least as good as we are right now this season and probably much better. With the influx of players, thanks to the Agreement, we’d still stand pat at the deadline, or at most, deal a younger player or two to recoup at least a couple picks for the next draft.
The same logic that went into us not selling off veteran players at this deadline would be the same whether or not Rehkopf is a Ranger, because of our record.
Not lost on me is the fact that we are short a top end LW among our top six. Rehkopf would’ve filled that need. But Sale may have as well. Did MM feel comfortable making the Rehkopf deal because he expected Sale to be returned? Maybe.
As an aside, what was the real reason Sale would only accept a trade to Kitchener last year? Was it because Rehkopf was here and both being Seattle draft picks he and his camp and maybe the Kraken saw a situation where he would develop better with Rehkopf?Who knows? Had we not dealt Rehkopf and Sale is in the position he is in now in Coachella (fourth line, minor minute duty), maybe the Kraken sends him back here to play with Rehkopf to finish out the season? A reach to be sure.
Sure, no Rehkopf trade and standing pat this year leaves us with a near empty draft pick cupboard. But we’d have enough returning assets in the off-season to mitigate that going forward. I think MM would’ve taken that risk. He could’ve done a trade week deal for picks the same way he did to pick up the second round pick we used to select Tanner Lam, then worry about subsequent draft seasons, as they come. With this agreement, and the strength of the last couple drafts, MM would likely have pushed his chips all the way in believing that we could still contend the next couple years without needing a full cupboard.
If Valentini reports, that would be a major chip that we would not have to be trading for the next couple seasons. And if he does not report, conditions on the trade are such, that the picks we sent to the Steelheads for his rights, would be in play for the 27 deadline.
