Kitchener Rangers 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

Just listened to a recent intermission interview with former Ranger Joe Coombs.

He mentioned that his son plays in the USHL (Dubuque) and thanks to the CHL / NCAA agreement, the Providence College commit will likely find his way onto an OHL roster next year. Despite his hometown Dubuque being WHL territory, he’d qualify for the OHL since dad Joe played in the league.

He’s OHL undrafted so I’d assume he’d either sign with an OHL team as a FA or be drafted by an OHL team in April.

I’m wondering if MM will try to sign him. He is a late birthdate ‘06 and currently ranked at 115 overall by NHL Central Scouting among NA players for the 2025 NHL draft. Might be a good idea to try and sign this player as a FA.

Hmmm I hope Mark Hunter saw this ;)

I don't recall Bray signing. I may have missed it while shaking my fist at the clouds? I also don't remember Anstis playing a single game yet either.
Bray didn’t sign. But he’s the last 08 flyer we drafted who could sign and play this year as he, as of last week, had not yet played a game post OHL trade deadline with his BCHL team.

But check that, just looked it up, and after not having played a game since Jan 3, Bray played on Jan 24 an 25. So he, like Valentini and Hextall, also cannot play here this year.

Understood. Thank You!

I think its safe to say now with continually rankings in the top 10 in CHL for the 9th week in a row that we are being seen as legit. At first I thought we were overachieving and it had a lot to do with Jussi and his systems, which it is the main reason for the success but the players have to buy in too.

While I am excited at the progress this season and OHL Championships are what teams strive for, I see this cycle of players built around the 07's as something that is special. When people talk about past teams they use to watch and how great they were, it usually gets talked about more with Mem Cups instead of OHL Championships. And myself, I am more about when it appears to be our time to go for a Mem Cup. So while I am excited about this years team, I don't know if this is a Mem Cup team. Yes, yes....we have to get past certain team(s) to get there and I still think we are the underdog.

So I put it out there, just curious what others expectations are for the rest of this season? West Final or Bust....OHL Championship....at least 2nd round...? Just like seeing what others thoughts are on this squad.

I mean at the end of the day we obviously want to win the OHL, but with how good a certain other team is this year I think that a successful year would be making the West Final and putting up a good fight (not getting swept or winning 1 game by the skin of our teeth).

For the playoffs I just hope if we get defeated (after the first round) it's a highly competitive series. Conference finals or bust sounds good on the surface but Windsor is a very good team.
Spits are probably the biggest highest scoring team in the OHL. If they play a physical series it will be a grind for any team to get through that series.

That sounds familar........

Well, that Windsor team had a reported cancer on the team that split the room down the middle. That guy didn’t show up for the playoffs either.

This year’s Spits won’t have that albatross around its neck this post season. That being said, any Kitchener / Windsor series will be long and hard. But I like our chances.

My issue is, what kind of shape will the winner be in, going up against a likely fresh London team? The Knights should breeze through the first two rounds and be well rested.

For me, success means an easy trip through the first round (5 games max). Part of our issue the past few seasons has been that we struggle through the first round and are all banged up going to round 2 against a well rested opponent. From there, I will be happy with a competitive series, or two.

As far as I’m concerned, going forward, I see this year’s team having a very good chance to get to the third round. That second round series will be tough but winnable. That said, losing a long series in the second round wouldn’t be the end of the world.

As far as this team’s long-term outlook goes, as constituted now, with the strength of the 06, 07, and 08 groups, aided by the fruits of the Agreement both current and future, and the addition of quality imports, I see this team next year and the year after getting to the third round - minimum.

Factor in four very good draft picks in the first three rounds next year, in what is supposed to be a strong draft in first two rounds, and our 09 group should be strong contributors to the 26–27 season.

Getting to the second round the last two years, second or third round this year, and in my opinion, minimum three rounds in the next two years, this team is in the middle of quite a stretch.

4 goals on 13 shots isn't ideal. Team can't seem to get anything going. They look incredibly slow tonight.

At least this is what I've seen when the camera is on the play and not zoomed into the jersey fibers.

That late goal is the saving grace to this game. Big 3rd coming.

Think we deserved the win. Lalonde was awesome for them in net. Think we had 5 or 6 great chances alone in OT. 2 points looks the same no matter how you get them.
I wouldn't say that. Lalonde kind of handed you the game with the last 3 regulation goals, but then found his focus again in a big way. It was an extremely entertaining game. I'm looking forward to a potential playoff matchup.
