Apparently, Filip Mesar has said "AHL or I go home to Europe". He doesn't want to play in the OHL again. However, the coach of Laval hasn't seen much progress in Mesar's game since last year. Ouch.

"Yes, we have to develop, but we also have to put the young ones in the right chairs. The player needs the desired ice time to be able to improve."

So even if Mesar makes the team in Laval, he won't necessarily get the minutes he needs to develop.

But return to Kitchener? I read this in two different articles:

"The climate in his Kitchener team was/is toxic according to some."

And with the season the Rangers had, maybe it was. But it didn't hold Pinelli from pushing hard and rising up the scoring ranks in the latter part of that season. Mesar never really lived up to his reputation and he certainly didn't tear up the OHL.

And from what we've seen in pre-season and the past two games, the Rangers culture has absolutely changed. Ahokas (a top International coach) and his two seasoned assistants have turned things around in that department in a very short time.

Does Rangers need Mesar? I would say he would be a nice bonus to get more picks by trading him to another team. Other than that, Rangers have a good thing going here without him.

If his attitude is going to be a problem, we don't need him. If they know they will send him back to the OHL, MM can shop his rights around if he really doesn't want to come back to Kitchener. He hasn't done anything in the OHL to show he's an AHL calibre player and doesn't sound like he's shown enough to MTL management to prove he is either.

There was a write-up about Mesar at Laval last night in La Presse (with help from Google Translate):

Before the Canadiens' training camp, he didn't brag. “I’m focusing on the main camp and then we’ll see,” he said at the beginning of September.

A month later, the Canadian camp is behind him, since he was part of a wave of cuts which took away around thirty players last Saturday. He was allowed just one preseason game, where he was on the ice for just 10 and a half minutes.

By his own admission, his camp was “ordinary”. “I had high expectations,” he admitted Tuesday. But it's a long season. I know what I am capable of. I'm going to do everything I can to prove it. »

The 19-year-old Slovak uttered these words in the Laval Rocket locker room. The Habs' farm club has started its own camp, and Mesar is one of the many forwards trying to land a position.

Here again, the young man opts for sobriety. Before cutting him, the Canadiens' leaders told him they wanted him to be more responsible defensively and, more broadly, to be more effective without the puck.

Above all, management wants him to see a lot of action. This is where it gets tricky.

“If things go well, I’ll play big minutes here,” Mesar said. Otherwise, they will find something else for me…”

Laval or Kitchener?

“Something else” would probably be a return to his junior club in Kitchener, Ontario. In his first season in North America, in 2022-2023, he certainly produced at a rate of one point per game, but he was not dominant.

However, this is where the “big minutes” will probably be found for him. A look at the Rocket's likely roster shows a surplus of forwards, both veterans and youngsters who, like him, are making the jump from the junior or university ranks. Jared Davidson has been a revelation at the Canadiens camp. Joshua Roy and Sean Farrell scored points, as did Emil Heineman, who is still with the Canadian.

Nothing is impossible, in short. But we understand Mesar not to breathe optimism. However, he does not admit defeat.

I want to play my way, using my speed well. I have to be better than these guys, whether they're young or old.
Filip Mesar
Head coach Jean-François Houle has spent the last few weeks with the organization's top prospects, first at the rookie tournament, then at the Canadiens camp and now at the Rocket camp. In his eyes, all young people who touch the professional ranks for the first time “are in the same boat”. “We take it day by day with each player,” he recalled. It will be a learning experience for everyone. »

Houle readily speaks of the “good attitude” of Mesar, who arrived with a specific goal in Laval. However, he is not full of praise for it. “In the rookie tournament matches, I found him average,” admitted the pilot. As the camp progressed, I found that things were a little better. We will see this week what he can do in the American League. I like his speed and his feel for the game, but he needs to be better defensively.

“If he stays here, we will have to find a chair for him,” Houle continued. Our players need ice to develop. They don't need to play every game, but they need to be in the lineup and playing on special teams to get better. There will be difficult decisions to make. »

Speed, strength, consistency

If the picture is not rosy for the Slovak, it is possibly even less so for Riley Kidney.

Mesar arrives with the label of a first round pick (26th in 2022) and is only 19 years old. The Nova Scotia native is a year older and was a late second round pick in 2021 (63rd overall ).

After amassing 110 points in the QMJHL last season, he was a ghost at the Canadiens' training camp. This only earned him one preseason game, the team's fourth, after which he was cut. He didn't even reach 10 minutes of ice time.

Maybe it's just a question of personality, but he seemed much more brash than his teammate on Tuesday.

He described the prospect of having to fight for a position as a “great challenge”. By his own admission, increasing his execution speed will be at the top of his priorities.

I need to make plays faster. I won't have as much time with the puck as I did in junior. Starting to play against 30-year-old guys is a big step. I have to adjust. I'll be ready for that.
Riley Kidney
Kidney also talked about the importance of gaining physical strength – he actually gained 10 pounds of muscle over the summer. It is also on this point that Jean-François Houle insisted.

“It’s the same thing for Mesar and for Sean Farrell,” he said. That and consistency. »

Getting to grips with life in the American League, “it’s not easy,” he recalled. Long coach trips and rigorous schedules can take a toll physically and mentally.

Filip Mesar and Riley Kidney, however, are asking for just that. Because if one risks ending up in the Ontario Junior League, the other could resign himself to joining the Trois-Rivières Lions, in the ECHL, if he does not succeed in making his place in the Rocket.

It would, if necessary, be another “great challenge”, let’s say.

Import draft news involving 2023 2nd round pick.

“HIFK announces that Aron Kiviharju sustained a surgery-requiring injury at a practice on Tuesday and will be out for approximately four months.

A huge blow to Kiviharju’s draft year as he’ll almost certainly miss the World Juniors, too. #2024NHLDraft”

I can't dispute anything Mesar has to say about the climate in Kitchener last season. Did it stunt his development? Absolutely 100%. He started out like a 4 alarm fire. By November there were games you didn't even notice him.

It looks like the atmosphere in Kitchener has changed but it's only 2 games in. Perhaps if Kitchener has a strong showing early Mesar will have a change in heart. However with it being a rebuild there will be several veterans traded, likely even Mesar. Would he be willing to put himself in that situation? Likely not.

When you go through a season like the Rangers did last year there's ramifications. Maybe it's just best to forget about Mesar and wipe the slate clean. Let the new era in Kitchener begin.

Probably the best case scenario for all parties if he is to be returned to the OHL is that a trade is facilitated ahead of his return so the Canadiens can be satisfied with his destination and hopefully for the Rangers rebuild they can get something of substance out of it...
I don't think it really serves either party for him to be in Kitchener it just moves one of their younger players down the depth chart and he would be better served playing on a contender. Any contender not London preferably ;)

You do the podcast with Farwell? I have thoughts! The first of which is why you'd stick your neck out like that on this board.
Don't consider it sticking my neck out at all. We talk junior hockey. Hoping people who are interested might tune in. That's it. Not like I have anything to hide. If people don't like it, they don't have to watch or listen. Simple as that. We're not curing cancer.

I suspect he’ll be given a period of time to show he can or can’t play regular minutes in Laval.

In the event it’s determined he isn’t ready for AHL hockey, and if the Habs are adamant that he play NA hockey, the best outcome for all would be a return to Kitchener after the WJC if, by that time, the new coaching staff has shown this is a good place for his development.

Of course that would have to mean Mesar accepts the direction of the Habs. If he balks, refuses to go to the OHL, and opts to go back across the pond against the wishes of the Habs, it could affect his future with the team. I’d expect he’d accept coming here for three months.

Under the above circumstances, the best situation to put Mesar in would be as the #1C in Kitchener. Dealing him to a competitor may leave him as just another player in the lineup, maybe forced to the wing again, where in Kitchener, he’d have to be “the guy”. Baptism by fire. Then at the end of the Ranger season (very possibly after not making the playoffs) he’d move back up to Laval to finish out the season, hopefully much better prepared for pro.

Sending him back here after the WJC would give MM that much more of an opportunity / nudge to move out Rehkropf at the deadline for large return. It would maximize that asset and make room for Mesar.

From a Ranger perspective, doing this makes more sense than just trading Mesar off to a contender for minimal return. It forces a Rehkopf trade which for best return, needs to happen this year. It would presumably show that the Rangers are a place to develop players and that the coaching staff is the real deal.

Mesar comes back I trade him to highest bidder whatever that is. I’m sure you could trade Mesar for a team going for it with a younger or weaker import and a pick or 2. First team I look at is Saginaw. I’m sure they would be all over Mesar for Zhugin and a couple of picks. That’s the only team I looked at. I’m sure lots of teams trying to win have weaker imports than Mesar. He put up a point per game and we all thought he played not good. Imagine if he actually does well what he could do.

I also ship out Rehkopf for a boat load this year.

Sorry…but Rangers killed their draft cupboard last year. Every option has to be thought out by MM to rebuild that right away.

Malboeuf gets his first start as a ranger. Excited to see how he does. Seems like they will run the same lineup until someone loses their spot.

Bottineau injured? If not please ship out a vet to make room for him. A good OA option for mem cup year hopefully but he needs to play to get better. He didn’t get a ton of ice last year either.

I see some other threads doing score predictions every game and I kind of would like to do it here.

I can keep score and winner at the end of the year, I could give 2 round one playoff tickets to or Home opener 24-25 tickets if they miss the playoffs.

If you want to take part, just quote this. We can use a hockey points system. 2 points if you guess correctly. Bonus point if you guess who scores the winning goal. Bonus point again if you correctly guess a shutout!

Enter anytime. Lets have some fun Rangers Nation!

In Kitchener it's possible the broadcasters might read this board. Or maybe anywhere in the OHL. Hard to say. But most broadcasters worth their salt wouldn't pay any attention to the rantings of anonymous internet trolls.
Look, this forum is awful, no dispute there. But the Rangers fans here are generally well informed and thoughtful. A few pretty anodyne comments about Farwell and Fixter don't constitute trolling. To be frank, you're the one whose behaviour seems odd and erratic.

I will say that while I don't always love him on the radio (I do think he's generally pretty good) Farwell is a great person and community leader and he deserves all the praise in the world for that. But respectful criticism of his work is fair game and I think he'd agree.

My thinking is that the Habs and Mesar himself may be more inclined to have him play in Kitchener after WJC as he’d be the #1 go to guy and play his C position. It may be a condition on him being sent here.

Getting back to Laval a lot later, or not at all this year if Saginaw was the destination, than if he played here may make Mesar accept three months in the OHL a lot easier.

It would would go a long ways in allow the Rangers to shed the reputation of not being able to develop players (if that is actually a thing).

But, as far as other OHL destinations go, Missy only has one import this year and may want to make some noise in the east this year.

No don’t make any moves. I can assure you that if Kitchener had lost a game this year that he would be substituted in. With the team being 3-0 you don’t mess with a good thing. Plus it will keep him hungrier to make an impact when he gets in the lineup.

Plus you need to have extra playable players. There will be injuries or suspensions or personal emergencies that players will miss some games with. Maybe is Rehkopf absolutely lights it up he could be a candidate to play for Canada at the World Juniors.
