No one turns on their own players as quickly or as disgustingly as this fan base does.

Shame
Depends what you define as 'turn' but he has 8 points in 24gp man. He's playing poorly and disengaged. Not sure what commentary you'd accept as appropriate now, after 24 games of him playing very badly... unless it's zero, no commentary at all?

My position is: he should be scratched. Not as punishment but to keep standards and give Pezz or whoever a little taste of NHL hockey. Dach is not up to speed and it hurts the team.

I would say that probably has a lot to do with that fear in the back of his mind about getting injured again.

We have all this season and next year to evaluate him.

Regardless of how anyone feels about him as a player, especially at this point in time, is there any harm in continuing to work with him and see if this is a mental/injury recovery thing vs. all of that adding up and costing him his potential?

He's not holding back a single prospect.
His value in a trade is not going to be anywhere near the upside of him finding his game again and developing.
The Canadiens are not fighting for a playoff spot where his play is materially impacting their ability to get there at this point in the season.

There's 0 value in doing anything but seeing if he can turn this around.
The problem is you’re saying he just has to find his game again. The “game” that you’re referencing is a total of about 30-40 in his 236 game career that he looked good. 95% of that on the wing with Suzuki and Caufield. A couple of preseason games, 1 regular season game as a centre. It’s really grasping at straws at this point.

He might very well just need more time like you said, but I think we need to temper our expectations too. He at no point has shown the consistency to be considered a 2C even when healthy.

As a prospect he had questions about his shot and his speed. Now he has a bum wrist and a bum leg. This has to be worrying.

He’s been horrible. Any fan base would be questioning him. Harsh? Maybe in some cases but he has been god awful
He’s been bad. But people are writing him all the way off... Then you get guys re-writing history saying he was never any good at all. It’s ridiculous.

Look, Dach could very well be done. I don’t think so but maybe he’ll never be the guy we hoped he’d be or even the guy he was. But there’s zero patience here. It just blows my mind how people can make the same mistakes over and over and not learn from it. The Slaf thread was a perfect example.

We weren’t going to make the playoffs this year anyway. It’s not like this guy’s costing us a cup. People need to relax a bit.

All that being said, I do think that we need to look for an alternative 2nd line center. At a minimum we need more depth up the middle. If Dach finds his game, great - that means we’ve got extra players who can slide in there. Newhook is better in the wing and is depth scoring so I don’t see him as a viable option. Maybe Demidov but we shouldn’t count on that.

So it’s either a bridge player who can get us through the next couple of years or we look for something more permanent. Either way I don’t think we should depend on Dach to fill the role. If Suzuki gets hurt this team is really toast. There’s no depth there at all right now.

Nothing wrong with being critical of a player whose struggling with confidence after suffering an injury.

But this is something else and anyone who thinks it's going to actually help is kidding themselves.

This was so predictable though, was written in the sky this summer.

It's been a whole 24 games played. Or in the mind of a Habs fan, an entire career worth of games.

Been a fan of this team long enough, trust me, I didn't expect anything less.

Since you know better and have been a fan for long enough to see this coming, what do you think is the appropriate commentary?

Since you know better
Why do you assume I know better? Just making an observation, if you disagree, perhaps you can vocalize it rather than these passive aggressive remarks which do nothing but cause me to chuckle in amusement.

I'm not here to judge what is or isn't appropriate, if blasting a player's IG page with berating insults is your thing or someone else's, get your rocks off.

Just not really my thing and I find it's cowardice.

You don't like the way a player is playing and you think 24 games is enough rope after a major injury to start blasting him on his socials...what do you think that's going to do exactly other than being weirdly cathartic for yourself?

You just said you saw it coming and it was predictable and written in the sky. Since you saw it coming you clearly must know where the line is drawn so where is it?

24 games into the season is not enough to comment on Dach's performance this season -- is that it? I'm trying to understand what you mean. If you think he needs more time to recover from his surgery that took place on Oct 31st 2023, you wouldn't be the only one.

Just not really my thing.
Blasting a player's social media page is abhorrent and an edge case in a large-enough fanbase anywhere. Dach is paid nearly 4m CAD a year because the sport he plays is followed by millions of people. It'll have shitty characters in there. You're shooting fish in a barrel bringing up something that is universally reviled and disliked by commentators on sport fan forums. No one here has offered to or asked to brigade Dach's social media.

What I saw coming was Kirby Dach struggling for the majority of this season. That was not difficult to predict, it was a major injury.

The fan reaction is just typical of this fanbase, you don't have to be a seer to know that.

Who told you NOT to comment? Have you not freely commented in this thread?

I don't think he needs more time to recover, I think the fans who blast his socials with nonsense or act like 24 games is a lifetime, need time to recover.

Perhaps you recognize yourself in that description?

Shooting fish in a barrel lol please.

I think I've got a pretty good handle on the pulse of this fanbase but for some reason, you feel awfully guilty like you're the one being specifically targeted here.

That's on you, not me.

You don't know how I feel so can that, it isn't so clever an insinuation. I never comment on anyone's social media and don't give a damn about their personal lives. If Dach's having a tough time, I feel pity for him as I would anyone and especially a young person.

I take umbrage to fan-punching and I see it everywhere in Habsland whenever the Habs start eating shit. 8pts in 24gp, coming back from injury but playing 16min a night, it's inevitable and written in the sky there will be fans critical of the player when the season is as bad as it is. We got our asses kicked by the Bruins, punching fans is unnecessary.

Yet it seems like you felt I was talking about your specifically? You keep asking me what commentary I feel is appropriate.

As if that's a real question. I'm sure you can tell the diffenrence.

It's deserved.

Sorry to say, but we're a vile fan base...our passion is the both amazing but also appalling. You feel the need to defend the "few", I feel the need to call out what I think are "many".

We all have different causes I suppose.

You’re comments like « I'm not here to judge what is or isn't appropriate, if blasting a player's IG page with berating insults is your thing or someone else's, get your rocks off. » are kind of specifically targeting the person you’re accusing of feeling… targeted lol… You know full well everybody hates that stuff, idiots doing that are outliers, and no-one critiquing his play on here is somehow advocating for it. You’re conflating millions of people and using it to argue with specific people. You should run for office.

If so, then yes, i'm talking to you.

Speak for yourself. Habs fans are terrific and shouldn’t be smeared by so-called fans who don’t seem to care for the team’s success and only live to punch at other fans.

He is one of the worst players on one of the worst teams in the league.

Worst +/- in the NHL.

It is only right to scratch him as he is actively hurting the team.

You think I don't care for the team's success? lol that's cute.

But yes, we have shitty fans, not going to apologize for telling the truth. I'm talking about a specific fan type and sorry, they are not "few" and you seem to insist on including yourself in that category.

So wear it, I don't give a f**k lol.

Each year Habs fans need a target to lash out their anger. Last year was Armia and Gallaguer. Year before that was Hoffman. Its just the way we are in Montreal. Probably the same in every fanbase, but in Montreal, hockey is more important than politics so it become quickly relentless.

At this point, Dach is playing bad, its a fact. But is it helping to always putting him down every game and to sur-analyze every little details he does? No.

I still think he have the tools to be a good top 6 players. Might not be a center but its really dishonest to give up on this guy when he's clearly struggling coming back from a big injury. The season he was playing 1st line he proves he can be a really special player. Sadly, injury slow his progression but it doesnt remove that he has way more to offer. I still think he can become what we saw before his big injury. Time will tell.

I see some signs of life in his game, but I also still see a lot of struggle.

The Chicago version of Dach was better than this as well. I've never seen him this off.

He's static, taking too long to make a play, doesn't have the puck on his stick very often.

He's playing with no confidence.

Lack of confidence, being tentative, over thinking plays that he typically just does instinctually.

And what's worse is that every mistake or mishandling of the puck, seems to end in the back of his net.

But there are very few players playing any confidence right now, so while it's not ideal, it's also not very alarming to me. We probably won't see him back to being the Kirby Dach we kinda got to see, until 2025.

Yes, the pre-injury Kirby had yet to solidify himself as the #2 center. He still had to prove himself there.

We’ll have to see the “old Kirby” and then some if he’s gonna fill that role.

They have 2/3 of a season left to decide if they have to look elsewhere.
