Newhook is fine, he is just playing with two players who are immature and don't come to play every night. The Newhook hate is plain stupid.
Newhook is inconsistent. Should have more production than he does but he also has no finish. He’s a frustrating player.

Totally fair to blame some of that on Dach for the first part of the season but a Dach’s been much better than Newhook since mid December.

He wasn't what the Blackhawks hoped he would be either, but that doesn't mean we can't use him to his strengths. It would be bad if the team ran him into the ground, because they thought he could flourish into a fantasy and they were stubborn about it.
What are his strengths?

What are his strengths?
He’s stronger than he looks and can dig the pucks out as well as he can carry them. He’s also a got good passing vision. If he has fire in his eyes he is a tough player to play against.

I genuinely like him and his promise. I don’t like him as the Habs 2C given his tendency to crater and crash for damn near a full season after an injury.

Best would be if he kicks as next year as a second line winger and finds his spot there.

Driving the net, uses his physic in control of the puck.

I think we should tune the physical aspect a little when he doesn't have the puck. As a center his hits don't separate opponents from the puck often enough in the offensive zone. On the wing though..

For sure he needs to be a winger and develop a power forward mentality but I just am not sold on this player.

Dammit I was ready to eat crow.

*Dach is back*...For the green jacket. :golfnana:

No consistency on the 2nd line.
2 of the players missed a lot of game time and are frankly just bad 5v5.
The other is showing he just is not a top 6.
Dach is a C with an elite sniper and only has 9 assists (Newhook with 5).
We need to know what Dach is by end of year, and if he can't prove he is a top 6C, then we need to address that in the offseason.

Weird how dach getting all the blame as usual. The whole top 6 has looked like garbage, where are our stars? Where has Suzuki and Caufield been? They are paid 8 million, sure don't seem to be acting like it. Oh wait I'm sure that's the fault of everyone else as usual.

I think Hughes should consider throwing his reclamation project playbook out the window. The trade looks iffy right now. Romanov is a rock and the better player, Nazar is more promising, and so Dach looks like the losing end of a three-way trade.

Newhook trade isn't much better... but his game could adapt better to a complimentary role. He has the speed, tenacity and scoring touch to become a great third line winger. A Newhook-Beck-Heineman third line sounds like a nightmare to play against. His lesser draft pedigree and lack of production means he could be signed long term at a bottom 6 salary.

I dont know if Dach has the speed to recycle himself as a big forechecking beast like Anderson and Armia did. His best skill is his hands and they are not good enough to be a real threat. His usefulness as a bottom 6 player is doubtful, as he is surprisingly not dominant as a puck protector on the cycle and he doesnt involve himself enough in the defensive zone, because he just doesnt have that kind of buzzsaw motor. At this stage, I feel like there might not be a role for him either on a scoring line or a depth line. He also has poor body English, doesn't strike me as a super coachable kid, and carries a worrysome injury history... There's a legitimate possibility he is out of the league sooner rather than later. Yet he could also turn it around and find his game to become the player envisionned when he was drafted 3rd overall.

Love how fans were taking a victory lap after a very good 10 games stretch. He's been god awful in the past 6-7 games. Let him be a tank commander I guess and the real test starts next year.

Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook have 33 combined points in 52 games this season. Definitely not top 6 material. Demidov will fill one of those spots next year and hopefully an UFA the other.

He hasn't been "god awful", he's been working hard and the team had looked bad and gassed but that's ok, it's obvious the clowns of this forum are warming up to embarrass themselves again. I guess one round of crow wasn't enough for you guys huh? 2 points for each tonight, not bad for guys who "wouldn't be claimed on waivers" 😆

It was more than just a 10 game stretch though (for the record). We do tend to be gullible on the high and low points though. It's a problem on both ends of your narrative.

30th best record in Oct and Nov
vs
9th best record since Dec to today (including that 5 game loosing streak).

I would keep Newhook over him.
Dach is as close to a wasted roster spot as anyone in the league.

Kirby Cardio being paid because of draft position.

I think Newhook is fine in a bottom 6 role, and with so many of our bottom 6 going UFA soon, he will be a decent filler.

We need a 2C. May it be by trade or a UFA, this can't continue. People shit on Suzuki and Caufield for mediocre performances recently while they carried the teams on their back for the last few years. We have zero scoring depth. Help our players and go get a f***ing C. We have a PLETHORA of picks and prospects.

Edit :

Demidov - 2C - Dach
Newhook on the third line.

Yup and I feel that Gorton/Hughes/MSL agrees with us. No offense to Dach but he has gotten lots of 2C opportunity. Evans should be retained and Dach should be on his wing.

Caufield / Suzuki / Slaf
Laine / ???? / Demidov
Heineman / Evans
/ Dach or Anderson
Newhook / Beck / Kapanen
Gallagher

Gallagher: Starting next year, we may have a problem with finding a full time spot for Gallagher. Especially if we add a 2C and move Dach to RW. Would Gallagher be OK as the 13th forward if we don't buy him out? I guess he doesn't really have a choice. He's not dumb... he knows he is overpaid. It might be early but there is a chance Gallagher is traded or bought out this summer. Look at the potential clutter we might have.

Anderson: It might come down to Dach vs Anderson for Evans's RW spot.

Newhook: A good piece to have with Beck and Kapanen. If he don't like it on the 4th line, work hard to try to get that 3LW spot.

Roy: You got some work to do to earn a spot over Newhook, Kapanen, or Beck. We can assume Heineman has the inside track over all of them.

Hage: Bridge deals to Dach and Newhook fit well with Hage's development time.

Laine: If he wants to stay in Montreal and keep that 2LW spot, work harder and show more consistency when you are not putting up points. If Laine is traded, who takes his spot?
