Kingston Frontenacs 2024 25 Season Thread Part Iii

View attachment 1026570

Looks like everyone from that last two drafts except Malhotra (obvious reasons) and Kayden Oliver (2024 9th - 0.5PPG in GOJHL this year) will be in attendance.

8 FA invites on the front end is interesting - shows the lack of depth. A little surprised they don't have Shewfelt invited as a U18 pick from last year.

As expected the FA invites are mostly local guys but there are a couple interesting ones that stuck out - Robin Kuzma is an American '07 that played a couple USNTDP U17 games, a couple USHL games but mostly 16U in the states, playing with Fronts pick Nathan Kutansky. Also the brother of former pick Andrew Kuzma.

Mate Tardi - another American '07, played prep in the States, led Mt Saint Charles in scoring, but has interestingly also played internationally with the Hungary U18 team.

Lastly they brought in one of the more higher scoring GOJHL '08s last year in Daniel Adamo - listed at only 5'8" 141lbs so not much in the way of size.

I know I'm very likely overthinking the FAs but if the two Americans show well, with the likely roster turnover they could have a couple open spots.

I think a lot of fans forget that Malhotra's rights are owned by Brantford. I do like the local flavour in this group because all too often the local kids got overlooked and passed on in Kingston...I still remember the Nolan Lalonde draft. I think Robar could surprise people this weekend.

Yeah I was curious about some locals in this past draft and oh my lanta when I looked at the Kingston's U16 team it's a miracle they had anyone drafted - a record of 2-29-1, 30 goals scored in 32 games with a differential of -96. I looked through their schedule and I think they were shutout 13 or 14 times.

I've read on here there are rumblings Malhotra could be coming to the OHL next year for the Bulldogs which hopefully should put the confusion to bed, along with netting Kingston a couple extra picks

Either way it’s all just to get destroyed by London.

Kingston? Barrie? Oshawa? Knights in 5

The obvious reasons he stated was him saying malholtras rights got traded to Brantford so obviously he’s not going to show up to the fronts camp.

Ethan Hay is going to Miami University for 2025/26

Damn fronts lose a good one. Wonder how many more we lose to NCAA. Any idea if Miedema would go if he goes unsigned?

Good for him.
These players have lots of options now, especially ones who are academically inclined and maintained good marks through highschool.

I can guarantee you Cooper's phone has been ringing this week seeing which 2005 born players are available for trade.
I'd be interested to see what some of their plans are for next year.

I wonder if this extends TBs hold on his NHL rights - they were set to expire June 1 but if he's now NCAA does it make it longer? I'd assume a commitment isn't enough, but he'd have to be enrolled there?

Either that or TB told him they weren't interested in signing him.

It's going to be a weird transition getting used to players going NCAA - especially for teams that load up on 19 year olds. Not that you can usually expect to get a hefty return for OAs, but something is bigger than nothing.

I also read an article somewhere that basically said that some current OHLers may have slacked off on schooling because at the time, they didn't know NCAA was going to be an option. I think Heyes mentioned that in one of his post-season interviews that he had let his grades slip a little bit, so I can't help but wonder if there are other Fronts in his situation.
Kory Cooper has won gm of the year!
That's awesome for Cooper - and I imagine this does nothing but help with recruiting and trades going forward.

Wouldn't this be an old issue from Grade 12 that he is referencing, like from 3 years ago when he was 17 and not currently 20/21 as an OA?

Aside from NCAA option that is now currently available, I would think you still need decent grades to get into a Canadian University or maybe they overlook that if you are playing hockey at Uni.

I was there and here is how I saw things lol. Looks like Kulemin, Henderson and Kuzma are signed. They were the only first years wearing a shield and not full protection.

Team Black: Returning players Kelly, Betts and Buttar. They had in my opinion the best free agent not named Kuzma, Beckham Brooks looked very good, skating, hitting and scoring. Kulemin is going to be a good one. Looks very talented. Others who looked good were Sled, Robar and Nettleton.

Team Gold: Returning players McCuaig, who has grown a few inches Henderson got better as the scrimmage went on, probably nerves, Kuzma looked good also. He was smooth out on the ice. He and McCuaig seem to do well together. Others who looked good were Magri, Williams, Snyder, Carter and Bonavota

Goaltending will be Betts and Vaccari.

Again these are just my opinions and I am nothing more than just a fan. If you have specific questions about individuals reach out to me

Thanks for the info! Obviously not surprising about Kulemin and Henderson but that’s awesome about Kuzma. As I said in a post either this week or last he should be at the very least a good OHL player (and on track to be drafted at some point this year, even if it’s a late round)

Excited to see the leaps Adam Kelly and Gavin Betts take. Buttar should be alright this year but I think he will be a guy who’s better when he’s 18 and 19 and maybe not put up a bunch of points in his 17 year old season. Kelly showed tons of flashes and potential last season and doesn’t get drafted until 2027! And obviously Betts will be great in this league

Interesting. Wonder if those 2 find a way to be on the same line at some point this year. Liked what I saw of McQuaig last year despite the limited viewings.

Interesting that it sounds like Kuzma has signed - could turn out to be a nice free add.

If McCuaig kept growing he could turn into a physical force - I think he was listed at 6'2" last year so if he can 6'4" that'd give them some much needed size.

Did it look like Sled had grown/filled out at all? I remember being super impressed by his skill at training camp last year but he was listed at like 5'9" 150lbs so he definitely didn't have the size.

Probably going to end the year as a very young team so a bunch of these kids are going to have bigger roles soon.

It looks like he grew a little bit and is stockier. Scored a very nice goal. I like him last year too. To me he will be at the main camp and should last past the 48 hr mark. The rest is up to him.

Good to know - I think we'll see a bit of him this year.

I saw on social media they posted interviews with a few drafted players but also interestingly Kuzma - which gives more credence to the idea that he's signed.

Kuzma signing confirmed. Guessing we see Kulemin and Henderson signings at some point in the next couple days/weeks.

Huge

Schultz #1 in WHL draft. Would’ve been exceptional status but for once the family decided against it.

Edmonton went a little off board with #2 pick with Cruz Jim and Liam Pue there and picked Holden Wouters but he’s still good.

Was then gonna be Kelowna who is hosting next mem cup #3 overall but they traded pick to Regina so Regina got the 1 and 3 pick

Picked Liam Pue #3, and he would’ve been #1 lots of other years. He actually applied for exceptional status but Schultz is better and didn’t want it so Pue didn’t get it

WHL trades are nuts

Battaglia Hopkins Soto
Miedema Dervin
Shewfelt Buttar
Kuzma

Bishop McGowan
Moore Williamson
Uens

Betts

Depending on if you can find a couple of RW and a backup goalie, you guys should be competitive this year I would not say top of the league but definitely mid pack

The deadline is going to be interesting Does Kory stay pat, or do you sell

I think the reason Schultz didn't go for ES is because they have some other developmental rule now where if the kid played up a full year, they could play up to 34 games in the WHL as a 15 year old.

It'd be interesting to see the OHL adopt that - if a 15 year old plays full time in U16, maybe they're eligible to be drafted? I have no idea how many people that would cover but it's an interesting thought.

Its a little different out west. Junior B isn't where most of the 16/17 year olds go to develop. U18 AAA is where most of the kids developing for the WHL go. So guys like Schultz playing up in U18 AAA is roughly equivalent to playing in junior B in Ontario. U16 in Ontario would be a half step below U18 out west. All of this is a bit hard to translate between leagues since the W does a bantam draft.

Beast? That time of year again when you make comments about the Fronts roster without having a clue? Last off season you kept putting players on that had been released or moved to other teams, like Budnick and Schneider.
Now you have 5 overagers listed

And hopefully they way you listed the D is no type of an attempt to rank them.

Also missing lots of young guys that played this year - Clarke, Wright, Kelly, Mondoux and now our two new first rounders.

Pretty sure people can stop listing Miedema as being back as an OA.

I did not rank the D I just listed who was returning and if they were R L

Yes you had a lot of players last year due to injuries and such but unless any of them can play r Wing I am not sure there is room for them

Yes, there will be rookies that make the team, but those are layers that are going to have to earn their spot, and that is always interesting. What I went with were players who are "guaranteed to play" if they come back

I am not sold on Miedema either but if he does not sign with the sabres then he will have to come back if he wants to play hockey and get a shot at NCAA or other. It also comes down to what Kory values more an OA goalie 3 D or Miedema
