Looking at some numbers and the Fronts really have a couple guys in slumps in their last 10:
Soto - 2G, 1A
Hopkins - 5A
Heyes - 3A

Heyes hasn't scored in 13, Hopkins hasn't scored in 18.

Hopefully a reset this this week will help - both healing and getting used to new teammates. I wonder if Mann gives Schenkel the Soo start this week or if Betts gets Friday and gives Schenkel Erie on Sunday.

As the Whig article stated, a lot of the boys were sick through the entire road trip. It's why Pienniemi missed Thur and Willis Friday. The day off today and lighter practice Tuesday should help them be good for the weekend.

Manza signed with Sarnia. Unfortunate he didn't come to Kingston but with their depth he wouldn't be getting very many minutes. Decent start to recoup all the picks they spent this year, but he still would've been a nice piece to have going forward.

Gonna grade players based on my expectations for them this season let me know what you guys think. (Just because a grade is higher then another it doesn’t not mean that player is better just that I feel they are performing better to what I expected out of them this season so far.

#1- Although he hasn't been given a ton of opportunity he seems to be regressing. With him being a 4th year player:

C

#4 looks to have lots of potential. Earned the role over vellaris for the most part being a training camp signing. Exceeded my expectations just lacks confidence and seems scared at times.

A-

6 will not grade, not fair with the trade and travel. Looks to be very simple steady d man with better skill than I thought.

7- elite offence more so then I thought of him being more a 2 way guy. Lacks compete and urgency at times.

B+

8- What a steal. Elite shot, great speed, heavy body. Lazy on the track most often and poor d zone awareness keeping him from a A+++

A

9- plays hard, doesn’t cheat the game, leader all expected from him. more production then expected despite a slow January.

B+

10- 200ft player, good stick, hard on pucks. Good offensive awareness. Expected out of a main commit

B

11- really turned up his offensive play. When he chooses to take over he can. For McGowan it’s all about when does he choose to put the effort in and when does he take shifts off. When he wants it this kid takes the ice over and lays punishing hits. Extremely impressed with his jump from last season I just wish they could get this kid to care more.

A

12- another steal. To think barrie cut this kid to start the year. Finishes every check, good PK, has scored some big goals. Knows his role and executes it (team player)

A+

14- again not gonna grade. Kid must be gassed from world juniors trade and road trip. wasn’t big on his games this weekend with how much we gave up for him

15- getting some more production out of him. Being his last year to sign with Buffalo I expected way more compete and physicality. Still wants to make soft skilled plays. Way too many turnovers caused by soft selfish plays. This team needs him to buy in to the team not his stats.

C+

17- great pick up out of junior a. Plays hard finishes checks has produced a bit on the fourth line

B+

22- can see the potential, for a second round pick I’d like to see a bit more despite his lack of opportunity

C

27- big jump playing more minutes then ever. Playing very well offensively. Has struggled at times with his d zone shares but a massive improvement from last year

A

31 wont comment yet till after this weekend

41- wasn’t a massive fan last year. Taken a step as the captain of this team plays hard offensive game has grown has had a scoring touch recently. Playing a insane amount of minutes the past month without letting his game take a fall.

A

43- the future of this franchise. Not saying he will be George but I see some of that 16 year old confidence and swagger similarities in them. Very exited for his future
A+

44- Diving infront of pucks, wins way more puck battles than he should being so small amazing gap and transition game. The definition of a competitor. offensive game still hasn’t taken the next step but isn’t killing offensive plays like we saw at times last year

B+

47- 5th rounder good skill could see him breaking out into a 40-50 point player years to come Playing with more pace and grit latley

B+

68- love his game great addition he’s a real gamer

88- had an great start. Turning over way to many pucks playing way to selfish I still see him as the same player as last year
Amazing hands and puck skills.
B-

91 - another great start plays the right way. Very responsible 200ft game. As a fourth overall pick In his second year I have high expectations but starting to accept he may be more of a reliable Patrice Bergeron type player than your typical 4th overall hi octane skilled forward.

B+

92- has had his moments competes hard on pucks but I am not seeing much improvement in his game from last year

C+

93 taking the next step on pace for almost 100 points . Really feel like he’s the most consistent forward we have every night. Good speed great shot very good long range passer. 200ft player

A

Looking at the conference I see 2 battles for top of division

Oshawa and kingston

I still can't believe that they are this good but in the other divison I see Niagara and Barrie with Sudvbury making a late charge.

The one thing I worry about with the Fronts is that they will compete for home ice and not give the players a chance to rest and get healthy for the playoffs.

This is good! I'll be honest, when I started reading I thought I'd be arguing with you(even though it's your own opinions) but I don't think I disagreed on any. I am a big Hopkins fan, and I think you nailed it - he's going to be a very good 2 way reliable centre and have a good pro career too. It's a shame he has to share the dzone with 88 and 92 who are clueless when it comes to their own zone.

I think the one counter to that is that Maleek has missed a month of hockey - he's going to be "fresh" when he comes back and the team will be even better once he is in the rotation.

Midterm NHL central scouting:
Hopkins 68 (where Battaglia was at end of season last year)
Dervin 95
I think Hopkins can push into the top 50 potentially depending on who he plays with. I want him off that Battaglia and Soto line those 2 don’t play a lick of defence and because of that Hopkins has to play more passive. If he was on a line with let’s say Uronen and Willis I feel he would put up tons of points and it would obviously be good for his ranking

However I have a feeling Mann keeps that line together the whole year

Hopkins I’ve always said it will be a star when he is 18, 19 years old- little bit of a late bloomer but will be an excellent pro I am sure of that. When burns is gone next year I absolutely think Hopkins is the next captain also.

Hopkins’ draft place will depend a lot on team success this season I think. Unless accumulating points at a rate of Musty or Martone, it is more important to win games than pile up points.

It may have just been because players were sick but splitting them up on Sunday was a start. I'm guessing we'll see some more line juggling for the next week or two until the players recover and start to build chemistry.

I saw one twitter scout that had Hopkins graded at 53 (for all skaters, not just NA) which is one of the highest I've seen. I think I had seen one list with him in the top 32 but the rest of the list was just hot takes (Hagens and Martone outside top 5 etc) - realistically I expect him to be picked anywhere between 55-80.

With Hopkins I think a lot of it was size, just going off the listed height/weights he's gained 20lbs since he was drafted - and I think it was Scout4Life that said Mann had challenged Hopkins to put on the weight to have a better shot to stick higher in the line-up and both sides did that.

Gonna grade players based on my expectations for them this season let me know what you guys think. (Just because a grade is higher then another it doesn’t not mean that player is better just that I feel they are performing better to what I expected out of them this season so far.

Specifically re: Moore - I noticed him being a lot more engaged physically against Sudbury. He seems like the kind of player that could take a major jump heading into next year. I also didn't realize how much bigger he's gotten since the draft - taking listed sizes with a grain of salt, he was drafted at 6'0" 165, and is now listed at 6'2" 195! That almost feels too high but he definitely looks sturdy out there.

Clark has been awesome for a U18 pick - Kingston hasn't had a ton of success with them, Clark is probably their second best pick after Paul Hughes. Spooner was a meh at best back-up, Ling had a good year in the Q last year but is now back in the OJHL, and otherwise I don't think they've had any other U18 picks play in games. Shewfelt is signed but is struggling in the CCHL this year (2pts in 20GP).

Obviously that’s why at best I see #50. I see him improving his stats here in the second half and in playoffs. Not going on a Beckett sennecke run by any means but being more engaged and producing at a better rate than he is right now.

Also the NHL scouts would be incredibly stupid to not recognize he has a LOT of potential which is what some of them draft for. For example: Beckett sennecke. Most of the year 15-25 range and goes #3 leaps 12 spots and nobody this year is doubting that right now about 6 months later

Also now this may not be a 100% accurate comparison since Procyszyn plays with a lot of grit but I see a lot of similarities between him and Hopkins. Don’t be too surprised if Procyszyn is on the team Canada bottom 6 next year at the WJC. Has always been a great defensive player and a great playoff guy(as we saw first hand last year) but this year clearly worked on his shot and the offensive parts of his game and has 24 goals in 38 games which would put him on pace for 43 on the year(as a defence first player)

This is what I see out of Hopkins next year with better playmaking. And then year after at 19 I expect him to be among the best in the league- may not be a scoring title type of player but could be a 80-90pt player with good defensive abilities as well as leadership. Hopkins probably is on the world junior team at 19 too same as I see Procyszyn who plays a pro style of game already.

I think Hopkins goes 50-75 somewhere in between (and Procyszyn went #68 to the team that likes to take chances in Anaheim)

I would not all be surprised if Procyszyn is L4 centre or alternate for Canada. He is a big strong kid that put a lot of hard work into copying all the best attributes of Arnsby and Wakely.
Hopkins was drafted with everyone fully expecting a near top of draft class player in his final two seasons. I don’t think he will disappoint.

I still think it is going to be Kingston Oshawa. Yes, he is rested, but if Mann goes with 4 D for most of the minutes, there is the chance that they get worn out or get injured. Even a small tweek can be huge inthe playoffs

That is the point I was making.

I get the feeling Mann will have a lot more trust in his 3rd pair this year. He'll still likely rely on his big guys but I don't think you'll have the games where the top 2 pairs combine for 50+ minutes.

I was thinking today, who will the next jersey number to be honoured be? I'd have to think Helvig gets up there at some point, even though he didn't have the greatest pro career he's got the most wins in history.

Bennett likely does too, and I'd put Robertson in there too. Does Wright? I'm not as sold on that one.

IMO should be Bennett next. Good OHL career and the Top Prospect Award in the CHL- drafted 4th overall and good pro career so far, got a cup too.

I think for goalies it should either be raycroft/helvig

Raycroft only 1 year of course BUT CHL goalie of the year AND the red tilson award for most outstanding player (MVP) also the Calder in the NHL in 2004

Helvig most wins and most games played I believe

Robertson for sure will get it at some point just a matter of when. Same with wright- CHL ROTY, top prospect and the Emms family award for being a first overall pick, also exceptional status which at the time I believe there was only 5 other ones in the 3 chl leagues. Tavares, Ekblad, McDavid, Sean Day and Joe Veleno (Q)

Really I do not think there is anyone at this stage who deserves it. Yes, Bennet has had a good run in Florida but he is not a star nor had an outstanding career.

When they retire is when if they have done something they should be considered.

I really do not think that Kingston has had a goalie that has not had his number retired that should be recognized. Raycroft played on a Bruins team that made him look good. His only claim to fame in the records books is who the Maple Laffs got when they gave the gifted Tukka Rask to the Bruins.

I can actually see Wright traded from Seattle he is getting better but is not the star that he was supposed to be.

If you want to retire a goalie jersey consider Moffatt

I'm positive that Kingston does not entertain retiring jerseys until playing careers are finished. And if f it took this long to get Bernie Nichols up there, these young guys mentioned have quite awhile to wait and need to have a lot more success.

There is no way he is going with 4 D when they are healthy. The only reason Burns has been playing 30 mins and Uens and Williamson playing 25 mins the last several weeks was out of necessity. Pienemini was away, McGowan hurt, and we had three others not necessarily full time OHL ready. A healthy McGowan, Pienemi's return and addition of Bishop is going to be fantastic and the ice will be spread out, allowing them all to be much fresher. This is how things will start out when all healthy...

Burns - Bishop
Pienemini - Uens
McGowan - Williamson

Don't get hung up with 1st, 2nd and 3rd pairings. Things will be situational and the order will change often.

Pienemi will get first PP mins
Burns and Williamson 2nd mins

Burns and Uens first PK mins
Mcgowan and Bishop 2nd pk mins
-Uens and Bishop will likely flip a bit depending on what pair is coming off and who is in the box - lol

Going to be more interesting to see what they will do with the fwd lines when everyone is going.

But you're not retiring them for what they did after Kingston, it's for what they did while they played here.

Bennett's already had a better NHL career than Zigomanis, Rhiness, Corpse, I'd say both Stewart brothers, Ling to name a few - long term success helps but isn't a dealbreaker

I would say I agree, but then you have the Stewart's up there, so who knows how they think about it

🎯 all about OHL success.

With Bennett he only played 124 games for the fronts tallying 155 pts. Not 100% sure because of that if he would get an honouring because of that but the award he won here (CHL Top Prospect) would hold more value (or should because I’m sure we have a lot of guys 150-200+pts who could have their names up there but never won any big awards other than at a team banquet

Nathan moon pretty sure has over 300 points and I don’t know if he’s going to get ever one LOL

You are missing my point. At no time did I say that they were going to overplay. What I said was that the worst thing that teams can do is play the assets off players in the sprint.

That to me is the issue that a lot of the top teams do Killer in Ottawa was well known for that.

Kingston has done it so often, trying to force their way to a home ice advantage or to being number one.

The Petes, on their last run, proved that being healthy is more important than home ice.

We know the Fronts are going to have a strong team and be really good, but what difference does it make if they finish third or fourth versus if they are healthy and ready for the playoffs?

This goes for every team not just Kingston.

An example is Niagara. They live and die on Flores. What happens if they ride him every game until the end of the season. Then get into the playoffs with a tired and sore goaltender.
