Kings Vs Oil are we the Rodney Dangerfield of the first round?

I'm wondering now if we got Edmonton's attention.

Just as we could expect Jimmy G to execute one bonehead play per game, the same thing applies to Mike Smith. Smith looked like the real Smith to me tonight, just as I figured he would.

Their defense and goaltending have been a problem for years. Kane is a good player but getting him and Hyman instead of a top goalie is like putting lipstick on a pig.
Its still early in the series to make any assumptions though.

Man I didn't think it was that bad but the amount of people calling it a lucky game and now instead of in 4 "Oilers in 5" is providing endless amounts of locker room material

There certainly isn’t much “maybe the kings are better then we thought” from Oilers fans after game 1.

Who was a top goalie to get? Grubauer? Sometimes you just have to work around a hole on your team, and hope you make enough other pieces better to compensate.

I think they should have overpaid for Markstrom when he was available. Kuemper is better than Grubauer and could have been traded for. Nedeljkovic is young and was coming off a good season and could have been had. Could have taken a chance even on a guy like Kakohnen who has shown some promise. Maybe even have made an overpayment for Gibson at the deadline.
They really could have done something to prevent going with Smith in the playoffs.
A bunch of random people on a message board knew Smith was gonna make a mistake to cost his team the game and yet a real GM cant see it.

So Oilers fans are still over looking the Kopitar/Danault 1-2 punch that neutralizes McDavid & Draisaitl 5 on 5? Or maybe they just won't admit it. They were only dangerous on the power play or when they got the matchups away from those 2.

I don't know what Edm's cap situation was in Oct 2020, but Koskinen was already there at $4.5m, and Markstrom got $6m. They've had no cap space for years, and they're going to go with over $10m in net when they need depth everywhere? Where are they putting Gibson's $6.4m?

I don't know why you would assume a GM doesn't know the holes on his team. As the cap era has gone on, Holland has been less and less impressive, but every GM is limited in what they can do.

A lot of the names you listed aren't even top goalies. They're shots in the dark. Maybe this young guy will do good. Kuemper's never taken a team anywhere.

He should have made it a priority and made space. Kuemper is a really good goalie. Markstrom is also.
Fleury wouldnt waive to go there so he was off the table but there have been well established goalies available that are clear upgrades over what they have the last 2-3 years and also younger guys that they could have taken a chance on in hopes of having someone longer term.

I wonder how many times someone told Ken Holland to get rid of Osgood before riding him to like 20 Stanley cups. Ozzy was rough around the edges but proved a lot of people wrong in his career.

No ideal how this team is even here with that disgraceful showing on special teams this year. I have no expectations with my only wish is having Vilardi and Kupari get some playoff action this series.

Regarding special teams / penalties / officiating

AA draws a ton of penalties. Second most per 60min in the entire NHL.

You know McDavid is going to draw his. Having AA in lineup can help even things out.
AA is good at drawing penalties because he drives right to the net and forces the D to make moves that often end up being hooks, trips, and holds. In fact, I think it'd be interesting to confirm what types of penalties he's managed to draw.

I'm kinda surprised Grundstrom doesn't draw more in similar manner but he's just not as explosive and skilled I suppose, but both guys have that nonchalant "yeah I'm going *points at net* over there and if you get in the way well that sucks for us" mentality, theyre not shy at all and I love it.

Bonus--those jam plays around the net make Smith go absolutely ballistic so gotta keep doing that
