Confirmed with Link: Kings Sign Kopitar (2 Years/ $7m AAV)

It's because this board is now polarized even if there isn't a reason. It wasn't like this until recently, there was great discussion. Now it's starting to mirror the internet at large where people try to be extra outlandish or try to become master instigators to set themselves apart. Gotta pick a side, can't give in, and so on. Gotta rip on something in posts.

It's only going to get worse as the population grows. The coupling of individuals craving attention in a world where it's harder and harder to stand out and the anonymity of a keyboard is a terrible combination. The only reason it hasn't flown completely off of the rails here is there is a solid contingent of long-time members who were around when discussion and debate was an in-person thing, and not a virtual one. Not to say that younger posters can't be solid or can see both sides, it's just not as common.

It seems that way on the face of it, but what if Kopi lines up between PLD and Kempe and ends up over a ppg? He certainly could have gotten more than this deal on the open market, so there is that.

Kopitar has had one PPG season in his entire career, and that was five years ago. And you think he’s going to do it again as a 36 or 37 year old?

It happened. We all knew he was going to get extended. I would have preferred to see how he performed this year before the extension, and it does seem a little high, but ultimately they were going to give him the extension he wanted.

He is one of the greatest (and perhaps one of the most import) players to ever put on a Kings jersey. He, like Brown, will retire a King.

Thankfully he is still a legitimate top 6 forward. His game seems to be aging better than many other players, so now wait and see what happens over these next 3 years. Pissing and moaning about it isn't going to do a whole lot of good. Once Kopi retires, then perhaps we can do a proper rebuild.

Pardon me for sticking my nose in your family squabble - but I don't understand so much gnashing of teeth. Kopi is still playing at a very high level - a true 1C level. Can he do it for 3 more seasons? Nobody knows but he hasn't shown anything to suggest his play is declining.
If he keeps up this level of production, 7M is a discount.

I think it's very risky though. Hard to imagine him at 37 and 38 years old being too productive.
And that’s the issue. The majority of us are aware and are worried at the risk of this contract, especially since there are other veteran players who’ve opted for the 1 year at a time contracts to see how the end of their careers shake out.

Then there’s also a group of fans who are ready to move on from the Kopitar era. The team has been lacking during his time as captain and are ready to move on from this era where it seems like all team decisions revolve around Kopitar and Doughty.

Kopi played over 20 minutes per night last season. We now have a real 3rd line center, first time in a long time. It’s conceivable that Kopi’s TOI could go below 18 minutes - it damn should. Not having to pace himself quite as much, it’s not completely out of the realm that he actually may be a more productive player next season - and perform better in the playoffs as well.

Here’s hoping his reduced TOI staves off father time for a little longer 👍

It's just knowing how 99% of NHLers careers have gone. Joe Thornton was scoring 82 points in 82 games, until he wasn't anymore. Drop offs can happen so fast when players get older. If Kopitar put up another great season the contract wouldn't be so bad, but there was simply no reason to sign the deal today.

Yeah I can kinda understand the "why now?" angle on this, but if he didn't get extended now it might open up the possibility of straining the relation which is not what you want heading into the season. Eh - I'm probably overthinking it.

I don't really, but weirder things have happened. Just saying, 7M isn't a lot on a new contract and it's just as likely he outperforms it than underperforms it. Replacing Byfield with PLD might have got him 8 more points last year.

Given how Kopi has been playing and the shape he is in, I doubt we could do better for $7M. He's never relied on speed or agility, mostly his brain and positioning, which is as good as it ever was.

I'd prefer a bit lower and signed a little later, but whatever. I didn't expect him to retire or move on, so 2 years is good.
That sums it up for me nicely. The timing is the biggest issue as this contract could look very different by the time the season ends.

Koop played his best hockey last season WITH Byfield. Whilst we may have wanted more points from him he certainly didn’t hamper Kopi.

I just want the Kopitar and Doughty era to end already. disappointed that we have to endure this longer. Built the best team with them when they’re younger and now we can’t build a team at all because some old dinosaur is trying to strike lightning in a bottle with players who are long last their prime. Kopitar has got the glory, got the money, now he can f*** off.

This is how I see it.

Kopitar>>>>Byfield
Byfield getting a chance at 1C >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kopitar

Can we please try to play our second overall player at 1C and let go of Kopitar. Why even draft byfield if he’s going to be another winger.

Typical Yanetti and Bluc bullshit. The most bizarre team in the NHL

After seeing how poorly Brown and Quick played the last year of their contracts, how could Blake even consider extending Kopitar before the season? Extending for two years at a high aav is just compounding the problem.

The Kings should be in a position where old vets should want to sign a short, cheap contract in order to have a chance to win.

Someone in ownership needs to step in and end this.

They better not give Doughty the same kind of extension! He's one guy that doesn't deserve 24k gold leaf plating on his already golden parachute. His performance has fallen off a cliff. I wouldnt give him 5 million a year honestly.

You think the reason people thought they should have moved on from Kopitar or made smaller one year deals after the upcoming season are only saying that for attention?
Not because they havent won a playoff round since his current contract and captaincy?

Dude, even I got that he was talking generally, not about just one topic.....but I mean, you literally just proved his point with that post...so there is that.

Proved what point? You said you didnt think this deal was necessary at this time also.

As an organization the Kings today, are exactly where some said they would be eight years ago after the last BS contract was signed.

Now we have three more years of the same crap, and the organization will still have not done what is necessary to rebuild and have a chance of becoming a Stanley Cup contender again.

Been saying for awhile he needs to be off the PK. Or at least a secondary option there.

You can see from the 'competition' metric he's facing arguably the toughest matchups in the NHL night after night. Really need PLD to come through and force other teams to pick their poison.

He was good last season, but definitely the best hockey of his career was his Hart snub season.

It doesn't matter if Kopitar gets 70 points or 100. That isn't the problem - his performance is remarkably consistent and you know what you are going to get.

And THAT’S the problem. We KNOW that it just isn't good enough and that if he is your team's best player you better surround him with some goddam killers that know how to win or you are just accepting mediocrity.

Its been that way his entire career. The man is an outstanding player, but not a catalyst or leader.

We can talk all we want about safety and fuel efficiency, but he is still a Volvo in a street race.
